Which of the commentators/analysts above are the worst?

I am kind of torn. This idea for a poll hit me yesterday as I listened to the NFL Network on my Sirius. I think something like this has been done before, but I can't find it.

Just when I thought sports talk had hit a new low with Jerry Rice on Sirius, Keyshawn came along on ESPN. I honestly don't know how anyone looked at these guys and said, "Oh yeah, that's a go." These two ask the dumbest, most inane questions I've ever heard. And it isn't just the questions themselves, it's the way they ask them. I heard Jerry Rice ask Linehan a question yesterday that took him nearly a full minute to spit out. He doesn't know how to ask a succinct question. Furthermore, he doesn't know how to end a question in an interrogative tone. He kind of just trails off. It kind of went like this:

JR: "So, Coach, with the game...we all know it was tough to play Carolina, but you came prepared, and they came prepared, maybe they came a little bit more prepared, but what we want to discuss here is things like the changes....you know, the uh, changes you make from week to week, and could you possibly take a few minutes to discuss what types of things you might want to be changing when you look at film of the game and the things that you might look at changing up to put different looks out there, whether it's with film or breaking down your own gameplan, or...."

Keyshawn isn't any better. Here's typical Keyshawn commentary.

SportsCenter anchor: "So Keyshawn, let's hear what you think are the keys to the game between the Colts and the Saints."

KJ: "Well, when you're talking about the Colts, you have to talk about Peyton Manning, you have to talk about Marvin Harrison, you have to talk about Reggie Wayne. And now, you have to talk about Joseph Addai, too. This is a high powered offense that's going to try and counteract the Saints, and when you talk about them, you have to talk about the big play ability of Reggie Bush, and let's not forget Drew Brees, Deuce McAllister, and Marques Colston."

And now Emmitt Smith is in the running. I watched him fumble over four or five players' names last week enroute to saying nothing for 3 straight minutes. Pregame shows are becoming nearly unwatchable.

Out of that list, Berman is absolutely the worst. Awful.

I chose other, though, because you didn't put Merrill Hoge on there as a choice.

Sean Salisbury [ 1 ] [4.17%] Jerry Rice (Sirius) [ 5 ] [20.83%] Emmitt Smith [ 1 ] [4.17%] Michael Irvin [ 3 ] [12.50%] Mike Ditka [ 2 ] [8.33%] Boomer Esiason [ 1 ] [4.17%] Keyshawn Johnson [ 1 ] [4.17%] Jimmie Johnson [ 0 ] [0.00%] Howie Long [ 0 ] [0.00%] Terry Bradshaw [ 1 ] [4.17%] Chris Berman [ 5 ] [20.83%] Other (Explain) [ 4 ] [16.67%]
I'm a little surprised. So far the votes are all over the place.

Other: The entire NBC pregame/halftime crew. What purpose do they serve? What angle are they trying to play? Sometimes, you think they are trying to be funny but they are just brutal. Collinsworth is the only one on the panel who knows what he's talking about but he's just so damn annoying.

Most of the analysts are horrendous. I think a better poll would be to see who is the best. You'd probably have a tough time coming up with a long enough list to justify the poll.

And don't even get me started on sideline reporters....

Other - Mark Schlereth

All the confidence in the world hasn't helped his ability to figure out the NFL. His 'insights' and 'analysis' aren't even useful in a Costanza opposite theory way, because he's all over the place.

I think a decent analyst has to have some measurable amount of intelligence and Salisbury and Irvin are just flat dumb. They go off on these ramblings that make no sense at all. It's like someone surgically went in and removed their logic functions.

I have to think Jerry Rice would be getting more votes if Sirius/NFL Network was free.

This is not even close. Jerry Rice wins hands down. He is horrible. He cant even finish a sentence without saying ugh at least 4 times. He never even says anything bad about a player its always yea he is good except of course when it comes to Jerry Porter.

Boomer Esiason

I just rarely agree with anything he ever says. I find him boring.

Berman may not be as good as he once was...but he's not worse than all the guys in this list, I know that.

That pretty much sums it up. The only good thing about Jerry Rice on the radio is that I now find myself not saying "Umm Ugh" anymore.

While the votes are there, where's the voice against Salisbury? I'll grant that the others are probably worse in snippets, but this guy is always on, it seems, and always annoying. My vote was for quantity over pure (lack of) quality.

Stuart Scott's 'cool as the other side of the pillow' shtick is getting pretty tired. Michael Irvin bugs the hell out of me. John Clayton knows his stuff but those facial ticks and his attempts to be anything other than a complete geek are almost painful to watch. They had him debating Salisbury a few weeks ago and he said, 'DUH!?' to Salisbury. I felt sorry for him.

They're all awful except for Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw (not as bad as some say).

Berman is the worst. He's a beating, sucking all lifeforce out of me.

I'll fall on a grenade.

I thought Keyshawn Johnson acquitted himself well on countdown. He didn't ramble. He kept his comments clear, succinct, and pithy.

He wasn't Jaws. They didn't want him to be.

But I thought he was consistently on point and much more polished than, say, Tiki Barber.

As a side note, did anyone ever catch Joe Montana doing pregame? I think he lasted one game/week. Great QB, absolutely horrible analyst. He looked like a deer caught in headlights. Someone would make a point, and they would throw the question over to Joe, and it's as if he looked surprised they included him in the discussion. He would have no answer, hem and haw for a minute, and close with some uncomfortable silence.

Irvin was by far the worst... he would talk... but not say anything. I missed his show this weekend... but Keyshawn was very good when he did the draft.

I like Howie Long okay, but other than that, you could make an argument that either everyone on that list struggles to talk intelligently about football or they think we're all pretty dumb. It's disappointing how little credit we get as viewers. Hopefully some network will eventually take a chance and try to bing us less schtick and more insight.

He came to my mind. Last week, he did a package on how Reggie Bush improved in his rookie year. He started out with clip of Reggie missing cutback lanes and running playside where the hole wasn't there. They he "contrasted" with clip from later in the season where Bush had a nice gain. The problem? The hole was playside. Bush didn't cut back or anything. It was complete apples to oranges comparison.

I'd go with either Schlereth from NFL live or Randy Cross from CBS. Both of these idiots should not be on television analyzing the NFL.

Whatever his current "catch phrase" is just makes me sick. Remember how he kept saying bananas (as in "that play was straight bananas") for like a year.

Howie Long doesn't even belong on the list (although I understand completeness) - Howie is intelligent, articulate, has played football, is funny and can make and defend a point of view.

Michael Irvin, on the other hand is a complete moron - but he makes up for it by being a jerk and defending every NFL thug that comes under fire. When ever I see his face (or hear his voice - I've learned to listen for him) - I change the channel faster than David Boston heading for a pharmacy.

How Berman isn't destroying the competition is mind boggling. Every other name on that list was an athlete first, broadcaster second.

Except Berman.

This is his profession for Christ's sake. And he's awful. Lazy. Predictable. Rarely on point. Asks rambling, incoherent questions. Relies on tired old shtick.

:)

Berman's kinda like the Carrot Top of NFL analysts.I have to say I agree with those who like Terry & Howie...entertaining & knowledgeable.

Jerry Rice is technically the worst, and that's how I voted. However, I would rather listen to him than Berman, Irvin, and Keyshawn.

Hands down it is Michael Irvin the man was always touching the guys next to him. There were times on that show he seem to be playing the race card when it came to players. He was just a bag of wind on air and will not be missed.

I voted other...Joe Theismann. Maybe not a true 'analyst', but I am so glad they have JAWS in there for him. Now if they can only get rid of Kornheiser, or however you spell his name.

Agree on the other's voting for Rice, Irvin, Emmitt...these guys were great ballers, but not good analysts.

I voted other:

Adam Schein (Sirius)

He makes me want to poke out my eardrums so I don't have to listen to his obnoxious voice.

My other would be Deion. I loved him in the booth when he called that game with Faulk, but as an analyst, he ranks right with Irvin.

Sean Salisbury is far and away the worst IMO. He's like Jay Marrioti (sp) in Chicago or Steven A in Philly. Just #### already, you were a career backup and haven't offered anything original since ESPN gave you a mic. As far as I'm concerned he couldn't hold Jaws' jock.
