Which VBD baseline do you use? (1 Viewer)

Been using draft dominator for 5 years or so now and haven't quite mastered the art of the VBD baseline. To make a custom baseline to how my league drafts, which option is better? by position rank or by point value?

I tried "by position rank" and entered in #'s based on the # of each position typically drafted in the first 100 picks for my league. This seems to undervalue QB's, as we usually have 6 taken in the first 4 rounds (6pt TD league) and this shows QB6 at pick 63.

If I use Joe's method the QB's look better and has QB6 at pick 44, but now it shows 6 kickers and 6 Def in the top 100, which NEVER happens in my league.

I've looked at all the help files and re-read the VBD article several times and I feel like I'm missing something?

How do all you Sharks out there define your VBD baseline?

It sounds like you're wondering why player values change given what the system might be suggesting. But, I don't think you want to change the parameters to meet where players are historically drafted in your league. That defeats the point. It sounds like other members of your league might be overvaluing the QB position relative to their true value given all the variables that you put in. If that's the case, then let others take their QBs earlier than they should while you grab value elsewhere.

Brock thanks for the link, that's a good read. I was mildly aware of the DVBD in the draft dominator but a little unsure how to use it properly. So I should just use Joe's formula to set the player pool to that baseline, and adjust the custom dropoff values based on how I know my league typically drafts.

I think I just need to tinker with this and do some practice drafts to get comfortable with doing this under pressure and under 2 minutes in our live draft.

Is there a way to pre-define the custom dropoff values so you don't have to go through that thought process with every pick?

Ahead of time I prepare with some notes for each round that includes space between this pick and the next and expectations for the positions of those picks. I also note the ADP of guys that I think are undervalued. As the draft proceeeds the dropoffs kind of converge towards zero. But you will want to note places where the dropff is not necessarily marginal. So a rough guestimate of say 2 QB's 2 RBs and 3 WRs gives me an idea of what I'd be looking at in the next round. You'll find, in mosts cases, that there's not much difference, pointswise between that guess and 3 QBs, 1 RB, 2 WRs and 1 TE, so within the two minutes, you'll have a good mental picture of the 1 round dropoff at each spot.

I've got an unusual league, but I think I have the baseline thought out and correct. We don't have any minimum starters for RB and Rec. We start 5, it can be 5 receivers if you wish and no RB's. 12 team league. I set the baseline for 20 RB and 40 Rec. The 20th RB projects to score the same as the 40th Rec with our scoring system. Since there's no starting requirements for the two position, just start any combo of 5, does this seem like a logical baseline to use?

I'm not sure if the DD allows you to do this, but really what you want is for RBs and WRs to be considered the same position, and to have a single baseline for that position relative to all the other positions. But generally I think your intuition is correct; a WR who scores 100 points is equivalent in value to a RB who scores 100 points. It's very likely that people in your league will be taking RBs too early and too often. See my article from last year on flex positions.
