White people (1 Viewer)

I'm white.

When I was in the Army I had a roommate who was black. He constantly called me, "my n******!" where n***** is the N word, not some mispronounciation or something similar sounding.

At first I didn't know how to respond.... eventually I settled on just replying, "What's up my cracker?!"

:lmao:

Akin to throwing out "Gracias" and "amigo" at mexican restaurants when you don't actually speak spanish.

Guarantees urine laced margarita.
I can see "amigo" being awkward. I see no reason why "gracias" is bad.
have talked to a couple guys about it... you can either speak spanish, or you can't. Just throwing out 1 or 2 cliche'd terms just makes you that annoying white guy... some even said it came off a little condescending.
What if I throw in a "Que Pasa?" like Cheech?
What if the amigo in the kitchen is my bro?
What if the amigo in the kitchen es mi hermano?

How about cuz? Because of course you are related to everyone you meet at some level no matter how remote. And you know given the whole one drop thing are there really any white people?

What does you focus group say for pronunciations?

Same as it's normal to make some attempt to say relleno, mole, or quesadilla "properly" (and not the way the English language would suggest they be pronounced), I make some attempt to pronounce dishes with words like camarones, texanas, or mexicanas "properly".

I don't do the gracias/amigo thing, though I do regularly get it done to me in hispanic food shops. I look Mexican.

If you can roll your R's and Ñ's properly then go for it, its like a secret handshake with los hermanos.

I made the mistake of pronouncing my brother-in-law's name correctly once (Juan) and got a looooook.

Oh boy. What's the protocol here? Respect or disrespect. How do you know?

Well I guess that settles it then. I'm guessing that these guys are your white bro's.

If you want to see how much pop culture, black culture to a large extent, effects the way we all talk just watch PTI. Tony is always dropping stuff.

If I text my 60-year-old white dad that I'm bringing steaks over have the grill ready, wouldn't be weird if he replied, "my n%a."

He's saying that's my boy while getting that him using that slang will crack me up. Not racial just generational humor.

Quit calling black men brother and black women sister. You sound a fool.
So no brother or sister, what should I use? Boy and girl is right out. My n***a? Not comfortable with that and if I mispronounce and get an err sound on the end, well we know how that ends. Sir with the wrong voice inflection might sound condescending, besides it's weird who calls who sir any more? Buddy? Even white people hate being called buddy. Pal? Can't say that without thinking of Die Hard, and if I emphasize pal like McClain did I'll look stupid. At this point I guess I will have to stick with a grunt and eye avoidance...
