Who are you going to put up to bid first? (1 Viewer)

For you auction leaguers out there, who do you plan on puting out to bid the first few rounds? Theory being, you put out guys you don't want first as the earlier players get put up to bid they more then tend to fetch at auction.

I'm leaning towards McFadden and Stewart as there are no rookie WR that will garner a large bid.

Just curious as to what the thinking is out there right now.

I'll put up Tomlinson to thin the overall money available if he hasn't gone yet.

It's not a bad idea to throw out a mid-level receiver or QB to steal if people are holding onto money and a bunch of big names are still out there.

I've come to the conclusion that putting out guys way "out of order" (ie mid- or low-tier guys earlier) is not likely to work in my favor, so basically whoever is ranked near the top that I probably don't want is my answer.

I am actually leaning toward Sidney Rice. If I could steal him for just a couple of dollars, I wouldn't mind, but my draft is in Minnesota and many of my leaguemates overpay for Vikings...

My other thought is a must-have handcuff, if the first guy has already brought big bucks. Several years ago I brought out Larry Johnson the slot after Priest Holmes went. Johnson, who should have been a two-dollar guy went for 18 because the guy who got Priest felt he needed him and everyone else knew it.

I think an even better idea is Chester Taylor if you can get him in before Adrian Peterson has been put up for auction. There are bound to be 4-5 guys drooling at the prospect of Peterson and almost all of them want Taylor as the hand-cuff. Whoever overpays for the hand-cuff is certainly going to bid up Peterson(and he'll be put up early in the auction by someone) above where he should be... which is pretty high in the first place. You've either thinned the $ of two owners or you've just devastated the salary cap of one owner completely knocking him out of contention as he can only afford the scraps after that.

You beat me to it. But I disagree that you have to wait until just after the stud has been auctioned off. I think if you wait until after the stud is auctioned off only one guy really NEEDS LJ and you're stuck playing chicken with the Priest owner. By bidding on LJ first, several players think they need LJ because they plan on bidding big on Priest.

I think this idea might just backfire. If I already knew that Chester was gone, there is no way I would bid up to the maximum amount I thought Peterson was worth. Also, I don't know how many people are willing to overspend on Taylor knowing full well that they will have to save a chunk of their cap for Peterson later. I'd rather take the chance that the Peterson owner is willing to spend a few extra dollars on Chester because, if there was ever a situation where you needed the handcuff, Peterson/Taylor this season is it.

A couple of things...- I can see why the Peterson owner might be willing to spend a few extra dollars on Chester after we know who has Peterson... but why would anyone else? The Peterson owner only has to spend extra dollars if someone is willing to play "chicken" with him. Would you be willing to overbid on Chester to make the Peterson owner spend a few extra dollars? I know I wouldn't.- Do you honestly think there won't be at least two guys still in love with Peterson even if they can't get Taylor? You and I may not be in love with him, but all it takes is two guys in the league that are and he's not going at the end of the auction.

My auction league it really isnt to your benefit to throw out names you dont want. Once its your turn to put someone up for auction you are out of the bidding and the rest of the league is bidding on that guy. At the very end since you nominated the guy you have the right to bid 1 dollar over the highest bidder to get your guy or you give him to the highest bidder. So, you really need to put up players you actually want.

I like to put top 15 players that I value lower than the norm up first. This year - Gore, Tom Brady, All Day.

Tomlinson is expected to be expensive no matter when his name is called so I don't see how its going to thin the overall money available. I think it would be better to put up 2nd or 3rd tier players with upside hoping to either get a bargain or to see someonelse overpay. Matt Forte will likely be more expensive if he's the 5th players called rather then 150th.

I'm putting up a risky target first and see if I can win him cheap. If I can it sets up my entire budget.

M. Harrison

T. Holt is another. Last person in the top WR tier. People that want Moss, Colston...etc. will let him go for cheaper than he will go after the big names come off.

Adrian Peterson (RB CHI) ;)
Nice, I might add Tiki Barber, Curtis Martin, Priest, and M. Faulk, all names that can still be had on mfl.In earnest, maybe players like Harrison, AJohnson, Moss, TO... spend spend spend.

Fair enough point. I guess for myself, it's a pretty big deal to have both much like Priest and LJ a few years ago and I think it would be for most others. Also, the more people bidding on Peterson the better unless, you want him for your team.
