I'm curious as to what the board thinks on this topic. I had a debate with some friends. Is the object of each season to advance in the playoffs, or is there a more thorough focus on each season (continually improve, win, advance in the playoffs, position for the future, etc.)? Obviously both teams won their division, but only the Seahawks advanced in the playoffs.

So who had the better season in 2011?

Colts lost 4 more games in 2010 than 2009 and started to show indications that they might not be elite anymore.

Seahawks won 2 more games and showed glimpses of future potential, albeit not all that many.

Colts lost in round 1 of the playoffs.

Seahawks won in round 1 of the playoffs.

Colts are the better team, but 2010 was a better year for the Seahawks.

I feel the fans of Seattle are more satisfied by the season than Colt fans because of the expectations for the season.

I think the best measure of the success achieved in the season is the round to which you advanced in the playoffs. Easily Seahawks.

Seems the OP is asking a broader question about the extent to which the overall franchise had a successful season. Again, I would say the Seahawks, as a number of their players took a step forward, and their franchise was attractive enough to entice a big coaching addition: Tom Cable at offensive line.

The Colts, on the other hand, failed to develop more than a handful of their promising young players and wasted one of the precious few years left in Peyton Manning's career. Not seeing any top coaches flocking to Indy to learn from Jim Caldwell.

The Colts pick at 1.22, while the Seahawks pick at 1.25. The NFL draft order says the Seahawks had the better year.

wild card round / division round - no real difference

The Colts had a winning record / Seahawks had a losing record - big advantage Colts

Advantage Colts

I think the best criteria is how far a team advances. Teams' goals ought to be 1) qualify for the playoffs and 2) win once you get there. Things like overall record are good for getting bye weeks, playing at home (in theory and usually but not always in practice), and quality of opponent once you get there and of course for getting into the playoffs themselves. That is, it helps you get an advantage in playoff matchup. But actually winning/advancing is the do-all-end-all. It is better to be a 10-6 playoff team peaking in January than a 13-3 playoff team that peaked in late November.

And exceeding fan expectations is nice and a morale builder for the city, but it should be meaningless for the players themselves. Players should set the Super Bowl as the goal every season, regardless of how unrealistic that is to an objective observer.

So my answer is Seahawks because they went further, not because of expectations.

I think expectations DEFINATELY have to come into play here. I would say Seattle, just because Indy is probably a little disappointed with "only" winning 10 games and their division. Interesting question though.

I see it like this...........

The Colts brought the prettier girl to the prom, and never even got to 1st base. The Seahawks brought the fat chick, and had her dress wadded up in corner of the hotel before midnight.

Advantage: Seahawks

Colts - less than expectations but you had the injury factor.

The Seahawks went 7-9 in a weak division. 3-7 outside their division. Fortunate to beat a banged up Saints team.

Packers with all those injuries.

Here I said the Seahawks. They had something like 300 roster spots and getting to the playoffs was quite a good job.
