Who in the draft has a questionable background? (1 Viewer)

Two of our role model PROFESSIONALS have now been handed their punishment. Tank will be next on that list in my opinion. Based upon today and the new policy set forth by Goodell do we have any gentlemen in the upcoming draft with a questionable background (personal conduct). If so who and does their stock take a bit of a hit based on Pacman and Henry's punishment?

Brandon Meriweather (S-Miami), Marcus Thomas (DT-Florida), Tarell Brown (CB-Texas), Eric Wright (CB-UNLV) are all possible first day guys who immediately come to mind. Ill add to the list as I think of more. Troy Smith has character issues in his background, but I think they are far enough in the past that we shouldn't worry about them.

Good topic. It would be nice to know what the specific issues are in each of their cases as well.

From NFLdc.com

Syracuse cornerback Tanard Jackson was stabbed in the left side of his chest in 2004 during an altercation that he and his teammates were trying to break up. Was suspended for a short time in 2006 for "conduct detrimental to the team".

UNLV cornerback Eric Wright transferred after he was arrested for suspicion of rape and while nothing ultimately became of those charges police did find 136 Ecstasy pills in the apartment he shared with a roommate.

USC wide receiver Steve Smith broke his roommate's (Dominique Byrd) jaw in '05.

Knowing Byrd's history since then, I'm thinking he probably deserved it? :goodposting:

Meriweather was the ######## that took his helmet off and beat an opponent with it. I've never understood why he wasn't punished more for that. That Lynch stuff was just a PO'd ex-GF turned golddigger.

Alan Branch's name has been of topic the last few days. Now that we have several names here, does their stock take a hit? What are GM's thinking now after these suspensions set in your mindset here...

Maybe. Do you have any info on that dealing with Lynch? It was a while back.

Rookie symposium is supposed to spend a good amount of time dealing with this including recently drafted players offerring "real" point of views to rookies advising them.

Some people have a nose for trouble, no doubt, but in general I expect things to improve.

I'm not playing this game like you guys, I'll put some faith in the NFL to get them straightenned out.

Pacman's not getting paid this year (more or less) and that's pretty brutal to a large amount of players PLUS most of these rooks will hear how the average NFLer plays just 4 years and a long list of talented picks that didn't pan out. I think they can "scare" or influence them now, I think Goodell's given them a tool to do so. Plus Upshaw can't like being put in the light of representing troublemakers and that guy's pretty scary when he's upset;)

I can only assume these NFL GM's are doing the same thing they always did.....the best scouting, intel, research that they can. Some GM's are just more likely to overlook past indescretions than others, IMO. Some of those GM's may alter their decision process slightly, but not much. They either decide to take a risk on a guy or not. I would also assume that it usually comes down to the interview with the prospective draftee/player and their impressions of him at that time. Players hoping to get drafted at a certain level can certainly change how GM's perceive them with the interview process.......or they could screw it up with any miriad of mistakes made between the end of their college career and the actual draft. There have been a few of them in the past few years, to my recollection.

What are the concerns about Branch? Lack of effort , taking plays off, or something criminal?

I'd guess that would depend greatly on what the player has supposedly done, or not done.

It happened while playing they were playing Madden. They bet on the game and Byrd wouldn't pay up, from what I recall.

I think Marshawn has some mild concerns. Not supposed to be anything serious, but anyway.
Marshawn has no character concerns. He has a golddigging nutjob stalker who's tried to get him in trouble.
Isn't it obvious I'm just a Raider fan that hopes he drops to us?
The problem is that some guys seem to attract those types in droves. Basically, keep your pecker in your pocket and be careful where you are hooking up.I really miss Playmakers. I guess it got cut because it didn't accurately depict how things really are.

Eh, if Marshawn develops a history of women problems, fine. But I sure ain't gonna consider this a black mark. Have you made nothing but correct decisions with women in your life? Give me a break, man. That's advice you could follow? "Hey, 22-year-old millionaire! Keep it in your pants, and only date the right girls!" I have no money, and can't abide by that rule.

These kinda quotes is what makes the "character" situation difficult. First, are the charcter concerns "criminal" or just immature. In the past, I have seen everything from missing a couple of philosophy classes, smarting off to a coach, getting into a fist fight over somthing stupid, being in a car where two joints are found, or dragging a 105 girl by the hair down some stairs all classifiied as character issues. The extremes of this list are obvious, but you try to figure out the rest w/o specific details. Even after figuring that out is there a regular pattern of that behavior. Too many guys at the age (myself included) do something stupid over a four or five year college whether caught or not. Figuring out whether that is a regular pattern of behavior or is a normal brain fart type thing that happends to most people when they are that age is not something that I would look forward to. Finally, how about having to guess at how a guy handles having both time and lots of money. I don't think it coincidental that there are more arrests during like Jan -April than when there is not the structure of regular season to keep certain guys more in line. All of that said, the three who have been most in the news over the last year, (Adam Jones, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson) all were pretty easy to pinpoint pre- NFL and people took risks on them anyway.

Tarrell Brown, CB (Texas) will be an interesting one. Talented kid, but he has had "issues" being arrested twice on marijuana charges, plus gun charges tacked on to one of those marijuana incidents. But if you dig deeper, they may not be as bad as they seemed. Both times he was ina car with someone else who had pot, and both times someone else claimed the pot. Brown passed drug tests given by independent labs within a day or two after being arrested both times as well. The marijuana charges have all been dropped in the end.

Then with the gun charge that was the same incident as one of those pot charges, he was actually asleep in the back seat when the cops pulled over the car (it was 2:00am or something like that), and he had the gun in his lap while sleeping (the cops woke him up). The gun was actually registered to the passenger sitting next to him, so it was not an illegal gun, though Brown had no license to carry it. That charge will likely get dropped or pled down to nothing also.

So with Brown, he really could just be unlucky or hang out with the wrong crowd a little bit. On the other hand, maybe its a sign of more things to come for him. Who knows. He never had any problems outside of those two incidents, and his role in both of those appears to be minor or completely accidental. So I wonder how far he'll slip in the draft. Should be interesting.

If you hang with the wrong people, eventually it's gonna bite you in the *** no matter if you're innocent or guilty. :loco:

According to Adam Schefter the following players admitted to experimenting with pot.

A. Okoye

Gaines Adams

Calvin Johnson

I will left you determine if that is a character flaw or not...Note this is not a report that any of them has tested positive...

Edit: I thought this was thread worthy, so there is a thread with a link floating around on this subject.

All the buzz in the NFL right now regarding behavior is around Pacman, Henry, and Tank. What about LJ though? Wasn't he arrested twice for beating women? And wasn't one of them a bar fight? Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I was admiring your team - could you add your scoring system in your sig as well, preferably on separate lines. TIA
