Who is the backup in Dallas (1 Viewer)

Kitna played well last year but will be 39 next year. Mcgee showed flashes last year. I am a Romo owner in a startup deep dynasty league and if Mcgee gets announced as the backup he will be snatched up. I only have a spot for one of them, who is more likely to win the job?

Its Kitna.

He can still play and his salary is reasonable for what he offers. He's great in the locker room and meeting rooms. McGee still needs more work to be relied upon.

Edit: Thats for 2011. I'ed expect McGee to be the primary backup in 2012 and forward.

Flashes when? I remember him throwing one great pass. The rest of his snaps were near disasters.

Depends on the game, depends on how McGee does in preseason. If McGee does well in preseason, they might give him a shot-not in a playoff game but...

BTW IIRC The cowboys reportedly spoke to QBs at senior bowl, it was blown off and then they interviewed another at the combine. Something might be up.

I was going to say something similiar. I only saw him play in the preseason, and while he showed some ability to move around well, he looked lost trying to move the ball through the air.

Way too much rush to judgment on McGee. He is the quintessential developmental quarterback. Those are guys with lots of measurables (arm strength, height, etc) and some level of intangibles but are WAY raw coming out of college and not ready to be a starting QB in the NFL.

By definition, developmental QBs are guys you draft with a later round pick and "develop" them over a few years (either on the practice squad or as your 3rd QB).

A guy like McGee wasn't supposed to see the field AT ALL last season, but when he was forced into action, he had a respectable showing, all things considered.

There can be huge year-to-year advances for developmental QBs. Ideally, Kitna will remain the primary back-up one more year, with coaches using 2011 as the "decision" year on McGee. Either McGee has made great progression since he was drafted (which does not mean he's ready to be a starter, just that he's made forward strides and merits continued development) or he hasn't.

I'm not saying McGee has what it takes to be a world-beater at QB, just saying it's not fair to cast him aside quite yet either. It's simply too early to tell.

I would hope it works for them that way but I'm a bit skeptical. Kitna is a 39 year old FA. I would bet heavily if a team like the Cardinals draft a QB and offer him a nice 2 year deal (ala Kurt Warner), that it would be difficult for him to say no because his career is nearly over. that would make sense, especially for the cards because they don't have to trade picks for Kolb, it stabilizes and appeases Fitz, and I really think Kitna would be a great mentor for a young QB (remember, he was the guy that bridged the gap as Carson palmer became ready). If that happens, McGee is still under contract this year and next. I think that is ideal for the cowboys to get to see what they have because, honestly, otherwise, the cowboys will only have McGee's last year under contract to get an idea because if kitna stays, Kitna will ge tthe nod if romo is out. I kinda see it as a situation where the Cowboys won't fight hard to keep Kitna becuase of these things and Kitna may be drawn to leave because of his reasons. either way, we should know what the cowboys have behind Romo this coming season.

they are consistently interested in Newton. Doing a bunch of homework on a guy that they won't draft.

In the least, this is a week after the draft story where the Cowboys failed to trade and pick him.

No clue what's "up their sleeve"
