Who is the next Welker? (1 Viewer)

A shifty receiver who consistently catches 100 or more balls playing mainly from the slot. Does he exist and if so, who he be? :jawdrop:

I think Welker is a product of the system. In Miami he was just another slot receiver.

Jeremy Kerley has a similar skill set, but will likely never got the opportunity.

Miami had no clue what they had with him.

Imagine if Amendola had Brady throwing to him ? Amendola is every bit as talented as Welker. They are almost clones of each other.
And there were some rumors that Amendola flirted with the Patriots before he resigned with St. Louis (with the speculation of him being Welker's backup and eventual replacement).

He was in new england for a funeral, and somebody saw him at the airport.

I could see shipley playing the same role, but with a fraction of the numbers, that is the horns fan in me talking. His brother is one to watch develop in Texas.

You can also look at players like santana moss and miles Austin that use quickness to get out to the middle and move the chains, but also can run to the next level and make plays.

classic.

Also victor Cruz was the only other player with the same ballpark of slot targets in 2011. He had a higher percentage in the second level though.

Amendola has good hands but not much else. From the few times I saw him, he was basically a flopper. He'd catch the ball and fall down. So yes, he got a lot of catches, but no, he did not get much yardage after the catch. Amendola could take a 6 yard route and consistently get 6 yards. Welker could take the same route and routinely turn that into a first down if not more.

Flopper ? Couldn't be more wrong. The reason his YPC is so low is because teams give the Rams everything underneath because they don't have a deep threat. When DA catches the ball, 3 guys are one him quickly. No room for YAC. The Rams have a terrible o-line and no deep threats, so Bradford has to thrown underneath. DA is quick as lightening and has great hands. Finnegan was trying to cover him in pre-season in the slot and couldn't. He said, "damn, he too quick for me".

That was from a tweet and it was never confirmed that was the reason for the visit. And news of that might have impacted Welker's contract renegotiations. From Tom Curran at Patriots Insider:http://www.csnne.com/03/15/12/Is-Danny-Amendola-visiting-the-Patriots/nbcscsnnesuperbowl.html?blockID=670222
Burkhardt (Amendola's agent) in turn, would not confirm or deny Amendola's presence in Boston. Meanwhile, in came another tweet from a follower that Amendola's aunt died and his father lives in Scituate. The Patriots are extremely cloak and dagger to begin with, but, in the case of Amendola, one could see why they'd be even more secretive. Hosting Welker's obvious replacement on a free agent visit will make things sticky with an invaluable player.

wow.
I watch every Rams and almost 50% of Pats games. They are near identical players. Just because you haven't seen play doesn't mean I am wrong.
LOLThere is a reason Amendola was cut by the Eagles and Cowboys...There is no comparison in RAC skills.

I think people honestly still underrate welker and his ability to read defenses, sit down in zones and catch balls when getting pounded and still get up.

How many times was Kurt Warner cut ?

I agree. I watched him in the St. Louis/Baltimore game and didn't see a resemblance to Welker. He is like a poor man's Austin Collie.

Nothing like watching ONE game and forming an opinion. 99% of the people outside of St.Louis don't watch the Rams and haven't seen Amendola more than once or twice.

Yeah, I'm sure a team that has been 15-65 in the past 5 years has a HUGE following.

Cole Beasley, WR, Cowboys- great hands, great speed, very shifty. He has two average guys ahead of him that aren't explosive or playmakers. Ogletree has had chance after chance and never steps up. Beasley is the guy that will give the Cowboys that extra dimension.

Amendola- was well on his way to the Welker level, had a solid season two years ago, missed the season last year. Will get tons of targets, Bradford trusts him. The Rams defense is a turd so he will be getting a lot of looks while the Rams play catch up. He is just as talented as Welker. Anyone who is saying he isnt just doesnt know football. Welker is one of my favorite players in the NFL but he has benefited a lot from being paired with Brady in that system. Amendola could put up similar numbers there.

Edelman- I have a feeling this will happen sooner rather than later because of the contract situation. There are time when Edelman is in the game and I cant tell it isn't Welker.

I think all of the guys have potential PPR monster possibilities.

Every other undersized white guy in the NFL.

Pre injury.... Steve Smith when he was with the Giants.

Now: Easy choice to me....

Randal Cobb. This kid is such a dynamic play maker, 22 years of age and was drafted last year in the 2nd round as a guy the Packers really liked even though they had Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson, Finley on their roster already. He is 5'10, 192 pounds (welker 5'9 185 lbs), so although small in stature Cobb is built well for a slot role. He can make things happen as evident by his returning last year. Welker in his early days returned as well. Driver is all but done. Cobb has an elite QB, just like Welker does and did. You can't double Cobb as you are not going to leave the outside guys one on one as that is too risky. Look for Cobb to make some noise and be a wonderful player for the Packers and for fantasy in time.

I think bulger2holt is off his rocker if he thinks Amendola is as good as Welker, but this is a pretty silly argument. You realize Welker is a UDFA and was cut by the Chargers yes?

When I think of Welker, I think of a short, stocky guy who is quicker than fast. Someone who is good at operating on short routes, but who doesn't have the size or speed to get downfield. Jeremy Kerley is the guy who most closely fits the mold for me. He's a great talent, but too short and slow to be a full-time outside WR.

Cobb is taller, leaner, and more vertically explosive than Welker. I think he has more potential as an outside WR than Welker ever did.

I never saw the tweet, but i head amendola say it in an interview on sirius/xm nfl radio.

I'm going to go with Doug Baldwin, SEA. He's under 5'10" and under 190 lbs. He plays primarily in the slot and was targeted 85 times last year during his rookie season.

The downside for Baldwin (aside from having blood drained from his hamstring) is that the Seahawks should continue to be a run-first offense. If they get those pass attempts up, though, I could see Baldwin with 100-125 targets from the slot in his second season.

I guess my question would be what are we supposed to be looking for? An UDFA that rises to prominence at receiver? A small white guy that gets a lot of receptions? A guy that plays the slot well on a powerhouse offense? A guy that consistently gets 110 catches? There may be a different answer to each of those but probably only one guy that is the answer to all of those (Welker). Maybe there isn't another Welker out there.

I haven't seen enough film of either to make a comparison. I'm sure, however, Brady is at least a factor in Welker's success (if not a major factor). If you want to bring up Amendola getting cut, don't forget Welker was cut by the Chargers and didn't do much with the Dolphins in three seasons.

Since someone already mentioned Cobb I'll go a bit off the board and go with Dexter McCluster.
