Who is the Next Wes Welker? (1 Viewer)

Edelman could be a Welker clone again THIS year. I still suspect Welker's rushing his recovery...

McCluster should be interesting as well...

The next Wes Welker is Wes Welker. He's the right player in the right system with the right personnel surrounding him at all times. NFL teams love to copycat but they wind up with a cheap knockoff that can't duplicate the real thing. Fantasy owners searching for the next Wes Welker will be equally frustrated.
Marshal Faulk's cheap knockoff was Priest Holmes. Not too shabby.

Harry Douglas. The offense isn't exactly pass-happy, but they've talked about giving Turner less carries and Douglas has the skill set to be the type of guy you're talking about.
This. Douglas may have been a big factor even without the Jenkins injury. With Jenkins out, Douglas will shine. The downside is that Jenkins' injury will have everyone looking at Douglas now.J
I wonder aloud how much production on a run first team (with a top WR on the outside) there will be from a slot guy when the TE is Tony Gonzalez. Off the top of my head, I can't remember a team with a top tight end and a top slot guy on the same team. I suspect Gonazlez will get his, but I don't see Douglas putting up anything near Welker like numbers in the same season.
this. :moneybag:

Really?? 100 catches Joe? Really? Come'on...Joe...Joe... Really? 100? :lmao:

I'll concur with some of the guys already mentioned...

Edelman

Stroughter

Bess

And I'll add one more who I'm sure 98% have never heard of:

Nick Miller (Oak) - guy may never get a chance in Oaktown, but he'll land somewhere and make a splash in the slot.

All of these guys are in the WW mold, but unfortunately only Edelman has Belichek/ Brady/ Moss and he will have to wait in line behind the man himself for who knows how long.

Riley Cooper

Doesn't have Welker's top-end speed, but he is plenty quick and has very sticky hands. I expect he will land the WR4 job with the Eagles this year, and his role will gradually expand during the season. In preseason next year, he will be challenging Jason Avant for the slot receiver role. Eagles like to pass the ball and they spread it out quite a bit, so I don't see him racking up 100+ receptions, but... well, he's white.

No comparison. Welker is small and shifty. Cooper is big and powerful. Totally different players.

I don't believe the OP was looking for players who are physical clones of Welker - he's talking about WRs working out of the slot with a chance to rack up big reception totals.I can see Cooper filling that role within a year or two.Plus, he's white.

i agree with a lot of the previously mentioned (amendola, edleman, shipley, bess, mclusker--especially since he'll get rushing yards too). I'd also add Avant, Breaston, to the list.

Very suprised that Steve Smith has only been mentioned once this whole thread.... he is "the" poor mans Wes Welker until the world sees he's a superstar

Cooper was a completely different kind of receiver from Welker in college. That doesn't mean he can't change his game in the pros, but Cooper is a straight line speed guy with very few side to side moves. Pretty much the polar opposite of Welker.EDIT: Ok, I see that the OP was going for more of a guy with big reception totals out of the slot. Still, Cooper was a big play guy in college. High ypc, low total number of receptions. He wasn't really someone that racked up a lot of catches on underneath stuff.

this. :football:
This same thing could be applied to Tampa with Winslow and Stroughter.

I'm still trying to figure out what the requirements are . . .

Short and skinny?

White?

Undrafted?

Plays the slot?

Getting 110 receptions 3 years in a row?

Returning from ACL surgery in record time?

Making a living catching 4 yard passes and getting 11 yards?

Taking tough shots across the middle and bouncing back up?

Averaging 10 catches a game like he did for much of last year?

I think all of that AND not having a very high ADP. Can you figure that out for me, because that would be great to know.

Eddie Royal.

Caught 91 balls rookie year. Is in his second season in the Patriot system. His QB will be improved this season. He's a WR in year 3.
