It seems that the NFL’s MVP Award is coming down to Brady and Vick, with Brady likely to take it. But the Defensive MVP Award seems pretty open. I’ve come up with five candidates. Add your own.

Clay Matthews

At mid-season, he seemed to be the front-runner with everyone mentioning his name for the Award. The Packers shut out the Jets, and then in their 45-7 thrashing of Dallas, Matthews he had a 62-yard return for TD of his only INT this season. He had 10.5 sacks through 8 games at that point. But he’s had only 2 sacks in 5 games since, and the Packers have struggled. They are not seen as elite defense now and Matthews has dropped out of the lead.

Troy Polamalu

In my opinion, Polamalu would be the clear choice right now, but will voters penalize him for missing the last 3 games of the season (as it now seems might happen)?

He is the signature player from the NFL’s best defense, and that often is enough to win the award. Plus his strip-sack of Flacco to let Pittsburgh beat Baltimore is the defensive play of the season. And then he followed that up with 2 INTs vs. Cincy (giving him 6, one off the NFL lead) including the great return for a TD.

Plus, it’s obvious from the Jets game that as good as the Steelers’ defense is, it’s not the same without #43.

James Harrison

The other anchor of the NFL’s best defense, Harrison is a force of nature that defined the first half of the NFL season with the helmet-to-helmet controversy. I think that hurts him in the vote totals. He has 10 sacks for the season and 6 forced fumbles, but only one sack in the last 4 games. And the success the Jets had running the ball with Harrison in but Polamalu out makes him seem less valuable than his teammate.

Haloti Ngata

It’s almost impossible for defensive tackles to put up the stats that win awards like this – Warren Sapp in 99 was the last tackle to win the award. Ngata has only 5.5 sacks and the Ravens aren’t the defense they used to be. Still, they rank in the top 5 for points allowed and rushing defense, and Ngata is the main reason why. He has made game-clinching plays the last two weeks: pressuring Schaub into throwing the game-ending INT at Houston and then batting Brees’s last pass into an INT vs. the Saints. He is impossible to block with one lineman and hard to double, but he might have to settle for being a perennial All-Pro and not a Defensive MVP winner.

Ndamukong Suh

Suh has 8 sacks and has played very well. He will walk away with the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, but probably won’t get that many MVP votes – he suffers from the same lack of stats as Ngata, the Lions’ D isn’t that good, and people inclined to vote for a Tackle are likely to go with the veteran Ngata and let Suh be content with the ROY Award.

The Packers defense has not struggled though, they are still tied for the top scoring defense even after giving up "25" to NE (6 of that was a defensive TD for NE).

But yes, Matthews stock in this conversation has gone down as he has been slowed down himself by a few injuries and teams focusing even more on him (which has opened things up for guys like Raji and Jenkins when he was healthy)

Troy P even with missing the games should be IMO barring an explosion by Matthews or someone else over the last 2 games.

It probably should be Troy, but you never know...I would guess a close vote with Mathews with Troy winning, but Mathews still has two weeks to turn it up and take it. Harrison has no shot since he's been targeted by the NFL brass for excessive hits and has been very vocal about it, 10 sacks with 6 forced fumbles is still impressive though.

Missing these games probably will take Troy out of the running. To be honest, I thought it was Matthews award to lose anyway.

Too much bad press for Harrison to get consideration.

How about Cameron Wake? Hes been unblockable all year and has won several games down the stretch all by himself.

Other..JULIUS PEPPERS
In the discussion, but I don't think he wins it.While he has opened things up for others and done a lot for them...being that far behind in sacks while at DE is not going to get the votes. One I forgot to mention. What about Osi Umenyiora?10 sacks and 8 forced fumbles.

He won't win it, because people don't know much about him at this stage, but this is not a fluke season by Wake. He is going to be a double digit sack guy for the next while. He still has not even reached his potential yet. He may be the hardest guy to block one on one in the entire NFL. He is a freak.

If people penalize Vick for missing games shouldn't they also penalize Polomalu for missing them, as well?

Clay M has done enough and the award is his.

It's amazing how much difference Polamalu makes, without him the Steelers have proven (the past few years) that they're a mediocre team without him. Crazy how he can make that much of an impact at the SS position.

I think he'll find a way to get back on the field and win the award

I think Matthews took a big jump toward the award this week. He forced a big fumble in the Giants game, while the Steelers D didn't miss a beat with Polamalu on the bench. Still, he has only 1 sack in the last 5 weeks.

Although he didn't play enough this year to enter the discussion, Ed Reed now has 6 INTs in just 9 games. He is one out of the NFL lead in that category, and is also second in INT return yardage this year. For his career, Reed now stands at #3 in the history of the NFL for INT return yards, at 1390. He trails only Darren Sharper (1412 yards) and Rod Woodson (1483 yards). With just 6 more INTs, he will jump all the way into the Top 10 all time for INTs - 7 of the current Top 10 are in the Hall of Fame, and Reed is starting to look like a Hall of Famer as well.

He also ranks first all-time in foolish fumbled INT return laterals.
