Who is this years Wes Welker? (1 Viewer)

I have to say, I drafted Welker last year and had him targeted all along (got him in round 12 #144 ovreall. Not sure I have a WR candidate like him this year.

Suggestions? Kevin Walter?

I'll throw out Mark Clayton, he's probably a guy who will last until 40-50 WR's in the draft but could be the #1 WR in that offense and have more of a Roddy White type year than a Welker type year.

I don't see any 100+ catch guys falling far like Welker this year, that was a starts aligning type thing.

I disagree. It looks to me like the 'Skins are using Randle El a lot more like Welker is used, with lots of short hitches, crosses and outs which act in the game plan the way that running plays did in traditional offenses. Moss is running more traditional intermediate and downfield flanker routes. I'm even starting to wonder whether this means that Randle El will end up with more catches than Moss, but I want to see more preseason games first.

later rounds - A R-E, Wilford, Patten (in a PPR, over Meachem - I think Patten will be the guy who often has 6/7 catches for very few yards, maybe with a short TD thrown in for good measure; Meachem will be the guy with 4-5 targets, but big plays)

I think Bobby Wade could have a decent year (nowhere near Welker), but I see Rice and Berrian as the "home-run" hitters for the Vikings and I think Wade can be the safety valve for Jackson. I can also see the Vikings using more 3 WR sets to help keep teams from stacking the line of scrimmage, which will open up the play action to the slot man.

if you're looking for a WR who will get lots of receptions for a PPR league ... don't forget to grab Isaac Bruce late. he's a vet who likely has another year in him and he's paired up with Martz again.

I think Muhsin Muhammad could be nice value you can get late now that he's reunited with Smith and Delhomme in Carolina.

I think they both will. I just expect Coles to bounce back to at least his norm. I expect 80+ balls from Coles. Much the same from Cotch.

Steve Smith(NYG) - Will be the 3rd WR, but will put up better numbers than Toomer. Somebody will have to catch passes over the middle with Shockey gone. He wont put up numbers as good as Welkers, but 70+ cathces and 8/9 TD's is certainly obtainable.

If DJ Hackett stays healthy, I could see him having a 60-70 catch season with 8-10 TD's. He's a very good red zone receiver.

Technically, this is the right answer. But to answer the question in the spirit in which it was asked, A-R-E, S Moss, Galloway (again), and Engram are the "late" WR I see as undervalued in PPR right now.

To find a Welker, you need a pass-happy offense that will score a ton. A bad ground game also helps the case.

That's a good reason to like Engram.

And if frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their butts when they hop. The only thing DJ Hackett has definitively shown in the NFL is that he can't stay healthy.Moose is (IMO), even at 35, a better route runner, more durable, and has better hands, nevermind that he's one of the better blocking wides in the league (which means he's apt to be on the field more than Hackett) and has an extensive history in Carolina with Delhomme. Add that all up, factor in the two week vacation that Chuck Norris got (which gives him that much more opportunity to re-establish the chemistry he had with Jake), and if you're looking for a late (10th+ round) receiver that can make some hay for your team I think Muhammad's worth a serious look.

i can't imagine anybody will go from undrafted to doing what welker did, but on a much lower level, i like a couple very cheap/undrafted guys to have a shot at nice seasons:

ernest wilford (i liked him even before pennington). he's the most polished WR on a team that will be playing from behind all year. he's the best possession WR on a team that now won't throw deep. he could rack up some receptions.

justin gage: developed a nice rapport with VY in a titans passing game that seemed to improve towards the end of last year.

depending how camp goes from here on out, i think matt jones is a flyer guy with some upside

This is exactly who I was thinking. He should be manning the Furrey/McDonald position in the offense and is an excellent receiver. If the stars align, he could put up 80-90 catches in that offense.

Lots of good names mentioned, sorry for repeats - going through the possibilities of true bargain basement types - late round/undrafted:

Jabar Gaffney (NE) - Chad Jackson was a disaster, and Gaffney produced as the #3 last year. $$$ if Welker or Moss get hurt.

Derek Hagan (MIA)- He may have 15 drops to go with 70 catches, but Pennington will give them a dink and dunk offense that results in more catches, but less yards. Would have said Wilford, but he's having a tough camp, and Hagan is stepping up.

Will Franklin (KC) - Seems to have some chemistry with Croyle already, and I don't see Devard Darling or Jeff Webb seizing the moment. An injury to Bowe and he could be a de facto #1 WR.

Steve Smith (NYG) - My #1 candidate for this question - should be putting up 4/45 5/60 type numbers routinely and take up the slack for Shockey's departure. Look to last year's playoff #s for a preview.

Antwaan Randle-el (WAS) - Another good one already mentioned - with injuries holding rookies Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas back, ARE should be good for 4-5 catches a game.

Ike Hillard (TB) - really? well, Hilliard caught 62 balls last year, even though he was banged up in the 2nd half of the year, and he had 38 catches in a 6 game stretch from week 4-9, averaging about 70 yards a game along the way. So far no one has seized that #2 job, we'll see about Clayton...

Laurent Robinson (ATL) - banged up and falling behind right now, but he's got the physical talent to be as good as Roddy White.

Keenan Burton (STL) - Avery's hurt and Burton has been impressing. Health was a bigger issue than talent at Kentucky. Burton has good hands and body control, and he's got great speed and moves after the catch. I'm just not a Drew Bennett believer and I expect someone else to step up as the #2 target in the pecking order.

with Amani Toomer as slow as molasses, and oft-injured Plaxico Burress a perennial 'game-time-decision', Steve Smith has a chance to blossom this season..you saw glimpses of his abilities late last year and again in the playoffs/SB..

Outside of Toomer and Plax, what else have you got? Steve Smith figures to see a lot of action in 2008.
