Who should HC Where n Why (1 Viewer)

If interested go to the 4:19 mark of this interview with Pat Shurmur

He says he is focused on the task at hand and that it would be bad for any potential hire to not be focused on the job they are doing now.

He says this inst like college where you need to get a new staff and start recruiting right away, that you have more time in the NFL to assemble a staff and get going.

He talks about how he enjoyed being a head coach before with the Browns and that he has learned a lot about coaching since then.

He doesn't definitively say he won't interview with a team during the playoffs. But his tone and comments about being focused completely on the next game and nothing else, does suggest to me he won't interview with a team until the Vikings season is done.

This isn't the only interview where he has said this. Reporters have been asking him this question in interviews prior to this where he was saying the same thing. He is focused on the task at hand and the next game..
The Lions are interviewing their DC Teryl Austin in Detroit tomorrow & then flying to Minnesota to interview Shumur.

Those are only two scheduled so far, but they’ve requested interviews with Packers Assistant HC Winston Moss, Panthers DC Steve Wills, Pats DC Matt Patricia.

Shumur is the only offensive guy. Patricia is the token white guy.

ETA: forgot Texans DC Mike Vrabel

Jim Harbaugh has been a great coach. Look at how terrible SF was before and after him. Look how terrible Mich was before him and then how they have done since. He would be a major upgrade to Colts or many other teams.

Colts interested in McDaniels.

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been requested for an interview by the Indianapolis Colts for their head coaching vacancy, according to a league source.

Yeah listening to the interview the second time he does say he can sit down and talk with a team, and he kind of says what he would expect to discuss, his previous head coaching experience, what he has learned since then working with Chip Kelly and now Mike Zimmer.

I was just focused on the stuff he is saying about doing his job now being the priority. But no reason he can't meet with teams for an hour or two to discuss it.

Point of information - I misread or social media was speculating, but Vrabel interviews with Detroit tomorrow, and Shumur is on Thursday.

In press conference earlier today Zimmer says that teams can come visit Shurmur during the bye week. And later on in the week. I guess they have some practices before they let the players get some down time.

Can someone explain to me how “29-51” as a HC of the lions” Jim Schwartz is getting interest from not one, but 2 NFL teams?
The reason he's been interviewing is because he has turned around two different teams' defenses since then.

I'm of two minds on Schwartz. The 29-51 thing is kind of unfair; he took over an 0-16 team and had them in the playoffs within three years. But his act wore thin by the end of his tenure. Like McDaniels, he would need to demonstrate what he learned from his previous HC experience, and how he's grown since then.

The Lions played really undicipled under Schwartz is the main reason I think he was let go.

The defense did play well though. Just too many penalties.

Harbaugh did get fired, the gm there wanted the power- they had back to back nfc championship appearences and a stockpile of draft picks (that were used post harbaugh). That gm (Cant remember his name) could have sat back and let harbaugh make him look like a genius but instead made a series of bad decisions that cost him his job. I know u of m fans are impatient but they would be foolish to move on from harbaugh. I doubt he leaves Michigan for the nfl unless he is fired.

Hoping the lions hire Matt Patricia.

Hoping the bears focus on someone who can “develop a young qb”

Hoping Teryl Austin gets a shot

Hoping JBC is back in Detroit. Glad they gave him the experience of a HC interview.

Hoping the vikes losing shurmer sets back the offense (sorry @Biabreakable)

Why would you say that?  I don't believe he has all that much allegiance to Michigan besides playing for them.  I think he much prefers coaching in the NFL and coaching the team he came from within an Aaron Bailey Hail Mary of going to the Super Bowl outweighs anything Michigan can offer..  The Colts offer a great QB to start with (assuming he gets over his shoulder issues).  That is more appealing than you're giving credit to and if he really wants back in the NFL, having Luck as a foundation is very appealing IMO.  Looks like he may lose today as well.  I think his luster has dimmed quite a bit in Ann Arbor.
Harbaugh is learning how difficult the gig is in Ann Arbor.  And it's worse when you can't beat THE Ohio State University....even though Urban Meyer has built a powerhouse in Columbus.

I would not be surprised if Indy makes a big bucks offer, and Harbaugh would have to at least consider it.

That, plus he lived in Ann Arbor for six years. And went to high school there. And his dad was an assistant under Schembechler. And their recruiting pitch to him was "It's time to come home." And this.

But other than that, you're right, not much of a connection.

I just think his love for the NFL is greater than any allegiance to Michigan.

Also, the pressure of not being able to beat OSU will cause him to leave Michigan too.

I actually don't disagree with you. Not sure it will happen this year -- I actually think his failure to beat OSU is a motivation to stay, especially since he may have finally gotten his QB -- but it's gotta kill him that he came so close to winning the Super Bowl and fell short. I could see him trying for one more bite at the apple at some point down the road..

He may be feeling the pressure and leave before Michigan fires him for not being able to beat OSU.  If you're a coach at Ohio St or Michigan you must hold your own against the other or you will be shown your walking papers eventually.  Perhaps Harbaugh does a preemptive move to the NFL.

Its possible. The offense definitely wasn't as good under Norv Turner.

Pat Shurmur deserves a lot of credit for how well the Vikings offense has performed this year. The main thing that really improved was the offensive line, so Tony Sparano deserves some of the credit for that and I don't think he is getting any. Lots of talk about Shurmur and George Edwards, nothing about Sparano.

I do think Pat Shurmur deserves all the credit for how the QBs have played though. I think he is more the passing game coordinator and play caller, also influence on the types of runs they have worked into the offense, which definitely changed after the drafted Dalvin Cook,  but the offensive line play Sparano deserves a lot of credit for that.

This is the first year that Zimmer has been more involved with the offense as well. Maybe he deserves some credit for how they have improved as well. He kind of let Norv Turner run the offense before, that has changed somewhat now, Zimmer is more involved with it and takes responsibility for how they perform, personnel decisions and planning now. So since he is taking that responsibility, he deserves some credit for how they have done as well.

I think Shurmur communicates well with the QBs. So that is something the next coach may not be able to replace.

Harbaugh after three years 28-11
Brady Hoke after three years 26-13

To summarize, the guy who left San Francisco after not getting along with management, has not done the things expected of him at one of the biggest football schools in the US, after signing a huge contract, should be able to recruit easily yet hasn't won a thing, is supposed to be offered a big bucks offer?

I think Jim can succeed well in the big house still, but he really hasn't shown, objectively, a compelling case for Indy to make him a large offer. I can see them poking around but he's already making around the same as a top 5 head coach.  I don't think he's earned that, or would be worth it.

How could you possibly know that or even think that? Do you know him? Harbaugh is one weird guy, and I don't think he knows what he is going to do next.

Oh I remember him well - both the good and the bad.

which is why I’m wondering why the Giants or Cards would want him.

He strikes me as a guy who can build a roster but who quickly loses a team.

the Lions went from 0-16 to a playoff team - but it wasn’t all sunshine & butterflies.

That’s what I remember as well. The Lions team he built was talented but self destructive. Penalties were always a problem.

He took over a team that was 46-82 with 8 straight losing seasons and went 44-18 with 3 trips to at least the conference championship. The 49ers have gone 13-35 since he was fired. 5 of those wins are literally only due to JimmyG.

Mich had gone 12-13 and had been unranked in the last 2 seasons before he got there. He immediately turned it around.

Stanford was worthless before he got there.

Jim Harbaugh is a great coach. This is not a joke.

Couldn't beat a team all season with a winning record. 9-8 his last 17. Hasn't sniffed a B1G title in 3 years. What was he ranked again at the end of this season? Steller performance in that Outback Bowl.

:lmao:
