Cowboys coach Wade Phillips clarified his late-week remarks about Roy Williams' starting job to ESPN Dallas on Sunday.Phillips indicated Friday that Williams would have to compete to remain a first-stringer. "A big no," owner Jerry Jones added when asked if he could envision Williams opening the season as a reserve.Cowboys coach Wade Phillips confirmed Friday that Roy Williams will have to compete to keep his starting job in 2010.
"We are going to play the best player, no matter what," Phillips said. The Cowboys' alternatives are Kevin Ogletree and Patrick Crayton, though Crayton is much better suited for the slot. Ogletree has legitimate talent and is a player to monitor closely in dynasty leagues. Williams, due nearly $13 million in 2010, could enter the season as a backup/fourth receiver. I'm sure Jerry Jones doesn't want to admit he made a mistake and will fight tooth and nail to try and convince everyone and himself that Roy Williams should be the starter. Funny thing is, everyone else knows Roy Williams sucks and has always been overrated. Maybe Ogletree forces their hand by clearly out performing Williams, which is not hard to do. They will then start to feel the pressure from the fans and Dallas media. Hell, they are already feeling it.Cowboys coach Wade Phillips clarified his late-week remarks about Roy Williams' starting job to ESPN Dallas on Sunday.Phillips indicated Friday that Williams would have to compete to remain a first-stringer. "Sucks" and "overrated" to me are two different things. Roy is absolutely overrated, or used to be. He was pretty awful the last couple of years, so he did suck. But, he has produced before, so it's not like there isn't talent in there, somewhere. And he's not that old. I'm wondering if there is any way this guy can turn it around.JohnnyU said:I'm sure Jerry Jones doesn't want to admit he made a mistake and will fight tooth and nail to try and convince everyone and himself that Roy Williams should be the starter. But will he be the starter throughout the 2010 season.
