Who Was The Greatest Punk Band Of The Nineties? (1 Viewer)

Dancing French Liberals of '48

Possibly the greatest drinking/grieving song ever.

"Buy a drink for me again/another round until the end...straight up the window right down the sink/we always spill our favorite drink"

"I just I wish I had some friends that weren't deceased..."

Spags

The Rip Offs merit consideration.

"I was hooked on phonics/But now I'm hooked on you..."

And Phyllis Schlafly would even approve!

Fugazi

now let's start talking 2nd place.
This.

There are some great options for sure, but it would require some real work to knock Fugazi off the throne here.

13 Songs
Repeater
Steady Diet of Nothing

They could have stopped there and possibly taken the title.

In on the Kill Taker
Red Medicine

I'll Squeeze in 2001's The Arguement as "arguably" their best work as the cherry, and MacKaye's roots with Minor Threat as the Whipped Cream..... Boom.

Dear Jehova,

Tell the minstrels that Fugazi formed in the eighties and that's when I remember listening to them.

Love,

Your archangel/hardcore prince

Not sure what you were listening to.... They didn't really tour until late '88 and didn't release anything til 89.... the bulk of their work was through the 90's. I fell in love with them in 91 with the release of Steady Diet (and retroactively 13 Songs and Repeater, personally.... so I was a LITTLE late to the party. :)

All of 13 Songs were recorded in the '80s.

BOOM.

I know I listened to Margin Walker in '89. Soddy.  You think you're so beautiful/you think you're so...so...beautiful. And I feel like...I wanna...I wanna set myself on fire.

eta* I'm right.

eta2* I even remember the cream pie. I had hardcore/punk friends. Yes, I did listen to this when it came out. We had cassette EPs and listened to Dag Nasty. Nasty!

yeah and this is out of print so if you find it you'd best be buying the album before it leaves Youtube for good.

I loved Blink 182 and the Donna's .

Rancid is my vote.

Are you leaving Bad Religion, Green Day, Offspring, nofx, unwritten law and pennywise off the list for a particular reason.

I would even add Dropkick Murphys, the bouncing souls and a little band named Nirvana

Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX, and Lagwagon would top my list.

The Riverdales And The Lillingtons should get a mention.

Riverdales:

"This is your 99% politically correct WFUN on-air personality...And I'm bringing you paradise by the dashboard light to bring you a FUN 101 take on the weather..."

Fun Tonight

Lillingtons:

L-I-L-L-I-N-G-T-O-N-S

Okay, they're an eighties band, but they helped define the nineties sound on Fat Wreck.

"Well that's not true I've got a pen/and a dog named Bob that pisses on my floor..."

"That's me in the streets with a violin under my chin/singing gibberish..."

NOFX: Linoleum

"Reeko/Try and understand/it is really is that bad/it won't just go away..."

NOFX: Reeko

I think that was pulley. But I didn't google
Oh, ####. You might be right. That's why I started a K or W thread. Watched Straight Outta Compton last night and was riveted by the West Coast/East Coast thing.

I'm totally East Coast in taste, it seems. Pulley it is. Ten Foot Pole, too.

See? I'm free-form here.

Let's do this from memory.

I agree with New Bomb Turks and Devil Dogs.  I would also add Teengenerate, The Jesus Lizard, Naked Raygun, US Bombs, Swingin' Utters and Turbo Negro.

We reached out to raftink and Teengenerate in this thread. The Swingin' Utters were also lionized.

The US Bombs, Jesus Lizard, and Turbonegro were not nominated yet.

But I can get with the Bombs...

"I ain't going to work today...GO! 45 MPH!"

Roots Radicals Vol. 1, right?

I really liked Green Day, Reel Big Fish, and NOFX.  Admittedly, I was barely in my teens in the latter nineties so I never really got into these bands until much later (liked rap, heavier rock (i.e. Korn), and more emo crap when I was in high school).

I recognize this thread is about the nineties. I do want to toss out that my current favorite punk band by far is The Interrupters.

She did the Ron Paul revolution song, right?

Interrupters are apparently a dividing force in the punk world right now. I kinda like them so far, though my knowledge is not so great. She sounds like Brody, and that will always be her knock. Another Tim (Phil Spector-esque) creation.

The correct answer is Rancid.
I probably agree. Let's link Rancid:

"Black coat/white shoes/black hat/Cadillac...the boy's a time bomb"

Time Bomb

"Never fell in love/'til I fell in love with you..."

Radio

"I had a dream I was a vigilante's sidekick/My name is Tim I'm a lesser-known character"

Side Kick

"Jenny De Milo...you don't care nothin' bout me"

You Don't Care Nothin'

"I wanna go where the [um] action is..."

Adina

NOFX for me as a band

But favorite punk rock song of the 90s...probably Brohymn, Pennywise.
Respectable statements, both.

I (in my humble, humble opinion) never cared for Pennywise but loved Bro Hymn.

Love NOFX.

Agreement!

Let's link Bro Hymn because it's awesome.

Bro Hymn

I think I can say that Rancids Out come the wolves was or is one of the greatest albums ever released. There are no skips or misses on the entire thing. I really liked Lets Go @Sebowski > Hey) and the S/T. But everything after that fell a bit flat for me. I actually liked the acoustic version of Let the Dominos fall better than the electric version

Again, all subjective.

You know who I dont think has been mentioned yet, and it is a shame because they were a power: Sublime.

I really think the more I listen to them in my later age that the death of Bradley was the loss of a true genius. Not to say other musicians that die are not, but man was he special.

No, never was a big fan of Pennywise.  I also never got too big in to the DKMs.  All the punk lovers in HS raved about them.  Guess Irish punk just wasn't my style.

But I loved NOFX.  I may have to dig out "The Decline" disc and give that a listen too.  Other than Bro hymn I may love that song the 2nd most.  Punk In Drublic my fav album by them.

Yeah, I agree. It is subjective and Rancid's "...And Out Come The Wolves" is remarkable I'd urge a listen to The New Bomb Turks's "!!Destroy-Oh-Boy!!" or Dillinger Four's (did I forget THAT BAND unconscionably) "Midwestern Songs of The Americas" as the best albums of the '90s.

Im assuming you read the book. Craziest thing I have ever read. Bunch of Degenerates

Yes.

My favorite song of theirs is "Take Back the Power."  I blast that after every trial win.

Why are they a "dividing force?"
