Can somebody that watched the game tell me a bit about these two plays? I'm quite curious...

Gadget plays? Or?

Perhaps Chili should put him under center?

TIA

Both were Gadget plays, that were designed as passes...

His bomb to Shiancoe was a beautiful pass...

Childress addressed the two "gadget play" calls in a post-game interview. To paraphrase: "We've been working on several of these since training camp. You keep working on them until you think you have them perfected and you wait until have an opponent where you feel confident that you can successfully insert them into the game plan. Today we happened to have two situations where we thought they might work...and they did."

Except drastically underthrown. Shiancoe was 10-15 yards behind the safeties when Rice threw it, but had to wait for the ball. Otherwise it would have been an easy TD. Sure, it's rediculous to be so critical of a WR pass, but to say it was beautiful is a stretch as well.

It was a 79 yard pass thrown by a WR.... It was phenomenal pass.

I guess when our expectations have been so thoroughly lowered by watching the Vikings all year, these kind of statements can be made.

Haha.. i think it was about 55 in the air... but it looked like he just tosses it.... the slow mo is pretty.http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d8044ce59

It was lobbed up there and a better pass would have been an easy TD. However, in this case it is certainly better to hang it with the TE that is wide open and complete it for a long play then to overthrow the TE and get nothing. It was a great play call with decent execution. The second pass was ugly, I think Rice had been hit as he threw a wobbler but it was scooped up nicely. Probably was not a great call on play #2 but it worked out.

It took a long time for the play to develop so Schiancoe was pretty far downfield by the time the ball was up in the air. For that ball not to have been "underthrown" it would have needed to be in the air for 70 yards -- a hell of an accomplishment for a true QB.
