I am looking for a list of players you guys think will make a sleeper impact on offense for 2008?
I like Matt Jones. Most people have given up on him, but he appeared to make a difference in week 17 and during the playoffs
I agree. Stallworth, Moss, and Gaffney are all free agents so they may not be back. I would expect Moss to be franchised tagged at least and Gaffney to re-sign for a reasonable deal. However, Jackson is much more talented than Gaffney so I would expect him to fill the #2 role eventhough Welker in the slot is the 2nd best receiver.I know alot of folks have already commented alot, but I like Chad Jackson as well. Buried on the depth chart this year, he was a #2/#3 WR in his rookie year and doing a fairly decent job til injury. With Brady at QB, and a history of pass happy offense, I have a hunch there will be plenty of opportunity for Jackson posibly next season but most definitely in 2 years as the free agents at WR play out. He's definitely in a buy-low status.
Yeah, if he can play against 2nd string defenses, as part of the 2nd string offense all year, he'll rock!I like Matt Jones. Most people have given up on him, but he appeared to make a difference in week 17 and during the playoffsYeah, just when Matt Jones was heading into everyone's trash heap, he re-emerges late in the season/post season completely out of the blue. Now the question is "is this just teaser-performance or a true progression for better things to come"? I like the direction Jax offense is going so I'm leaning towards Jones becoming more productive from fantasy evaluation. The days of thinking he has top 5 stud WR potential are gone, but he could make it into the top 20 WR's in TD heavy scoring systems.
you must have missed the Charger game. Houston was playing the best DB's they had and Jones did it with a journeyman QB. Last I checked only Dunta was out of the game due to injury since Houston was playing their starters while trying to win their last game of the year. Basically you are raising your hand and saying I can't think of anything else to say so I am going to result to hyperboleYeah, if he can play against 2nd string defenses, as part of the 2nd string offense all year, he'll rock!I like Matt Jones. I like him a lot to, but I just have a feeling he is going to be one of those players on everybody's sleeper list by draft time next year so he may end up being overvalued. If he has a good Super Bowl with everyone in the world watching that will only increase his value for next year.Bradshaw in NY... as Jacobs and Ward are both very injury prone.
Exactly.Case in point: The fact that the Patriots spent a 2nd and 7th round draft pick to the Dolphins in the trade for Wes Welker last year told me right away that they had big plans for him. Welker immediately jumped to the top of my sleeper list and stood alone. With the Pats having signed Moss and Stallworth only solidified it. With Welker being the slot receiver with those two on the outside, along with the fact that Brady likes to work the middle of the field so much, I COULDN'T WAIT to draft him. It was like Christmas morning. It's early for these threads. With coaching changes, FA's, trades, cap cuts and the draft things will change dramatically for many teams.
I have a feeling that Jackson may be traded this offseason. Rumors in NE that he cant grasp the play book. Might want to keep an eye on that.I know alot of folks have already commented alot, but I like Chad Jackson as well. Jones' whole career is sprinkled with games where he puts up big stats...followed by weeks of dropped TD passes and lackluster route running. I definitely wouldn't put much stock in him. I gave up on him about six weeks into this season and it will take more than a couple of good games to resurrect his career.I like Matt Jones. Most people have given up on him, but he appeared to make a difference in week 17 and during the playoffs
I meant the Patriots game. One way or the other he finished the season on a terror.I'm pretty sure the Patriots weren't resting their 2nd string guys when Jones capped off the year with 49 yards and a score.you must have missed the Charger game. Next time you want to slam someone for "resulting to hyperbole", check your facts. Check your grammar too, but I won't dwell on that.
how can you resurrect a career that was never there. Not sure what you expected from him, but he's a college QB being converted to WR. It's a difficult transition to make for anybody. It's not like Randle El is doing much either. The fact is Jones can get more consistent with experience especially Del Rio can get him to have the right attitude.I take a look at Hines Ward's numbers in his 1st few years and it's not like he lit up, so I have hope for guys like Matt Jones. He was originally a project, but everybody expected way too much from because he was drafted in the 1st round and then had a decent rookie season. We should have known better, playing Wide receiver is a trade and it takes a while to pick up all the things you need to do. It just seemed at the end of the year like he was putting it together. I imagine being inactive for half the games was probably a humbling experience.Jones' whole career is sprinkled with games where he puts up big stats...followed by weeks of dropped TD passes and lackluster route running. There was no need to "justify" it, you said they played the best they had, everyone knows Houston's CBs aside from Dunta are horrible. Terror? Really? One great game as already stated - in which he only played because his team was resting their real players (remember, Greg Jones was their leading rusher) against poor Corners.I meant the Patriots game. I see you had no rebuttal on Houston playing their starters, so rather than justify your position you attack mine...
I don't think resurrecting his career was the intented language. Moreso, resurrecting his hyped future value as a fantasy player. Being a 1st round pick, ran like a 4.3 forty, stands 6'5'' and played QB in college all made Jones seem like the greatest potential at WR ever, just based those sort of measurable things. Bad hands and route running seems to be his downside. Strangely though with 4.3 speed, In the 3 years in the NFL, I don't recall ever seeing Jones blasting past corners on "go" routes. I'm starting to wonder about that combine speed.how can you resurrect a career that was never there. Not sure what you expected from him, but he's a college QB being converted to WR. unpossibleChris Perry will be the starter in Cincy.![]()
Like I said before, what do you expect from a converted QB? It takes a while to develop even for guys that played WR in college. Look at some of the best recently retired or nearing the end guys that had longevity.Jimmy Smith had a cup of coffee with Dallas in 92 and then didn't register a stat for 2 years. Had a mediocre season in 95 with Jacksonville. Next thing you know, he's a 5 time pro bowler. Then there is the poster boys for the 3 year wr theory in Rod Smith and Eric Moulds Keenan McCardell had a semi-breakout season in his 4th year with the browns. Than ended up having a lights out season in 96 and pretty decent career with the Jags Toomer didn't really do a whole lot until his 4th year Took Tim Brown 6 years. Driver 4 years. Joe Horn 5 years Seems like there are always some late bloomers at WR. When you look back at some guys who had long careers that recently got over.I'm not saying to go out and spend an early pick on him. It's just that I can think of worse guys to go after. If he can crack the starting line-up next year he could be much better.I don't think resurrecting his career was the intented language. that very well may be true. As I was looking up the older/retired WR's at Pro-FootballReference.com, I noticed that sometimes players bust out with their 2nd teams...i agree with some of you that Matt Jones could be a sleeper. he just needs to get out of Jacksonville. I would love it if Dallas traded a late round pick to snag him or signed him as a free agent if the Jags let him go. He'd be a perfect slot guy with TO generating double coverage on the outside and Glenn or Crayton each taking up another by default.
