Who's really Fred Taylor's backup? (1 Viewer)

Toefield or Wimbush?

Derrick Wimbush is reportedly ahead of Maurice Drew in the battle to be the team's backup running back.

With Greg Jones out, the team may de-emphasize the fullback role, using Wimbush more as a tailback. While we wouldn't draft Wimbush in his second season, it looks like he and LaBrandon Toefield are first in line for carries behind Fred Taylor.

I wont throw it out of the question but Wimbush hasnt even recorded a preaseason carry. After Jones went down, Toefield started game 4 and gave way to Jones-Drew. Toe has been looking very good in camp and wouldnt be surprised if Taylor were to go down, then the Jaguars using a full blown RBBC.

what ever happened to alvin pearman? i thought he was a potential Taylor backup but no one is talking about him. has he played much this preseason?

Personally, Id like him on the roster. But Jones-Drew has looked very good in the role that Pearman once had and if Chad Owens can play the way he does in camp, the Jaguars have a better returner. Funny how things change even after a productive season. The Jaguars just have better players at the positions he used to play. EDIT: He wasnt cut. :thumbup:Well if anything, I just dont know now. But what I do know is that JDR loves Wimbush. Wouldnt be surprised to see him as a primary backup. But in all actuality, its probably Toefield

Jags HC Del Rio noncommittal on primary RB backup

Although rookie running back Maurice Drew received praise for his performance against Atlanta, Del Rio remained noncommittal about naming him Taylor's primary backup. The coach also indicated that the club doesn't plan on making Drew its top punt returner. "I don't think we can commit to him as our sole punt returner at this time," he said. "The other two guys [Chad Owens and Alvin Pearman] have caught the ball very well."

Very :goodposting: Read between the lines there. Wimbush and Pearman/Owens will be returning punts/kicks. Jones-Drew will have fresh legs and will only be used only on offensive drives (no ST play). While this may hurt his fantasy prospects in leagues that award return yards, he never should have been considered a leader for the job anyway. If anything this is a blessing in disguise. He'll end up with more PT and speed the learning curve.

If F. Taylor is unable to play, I think it's only a matter of time before Drew gets the job (mid-way through the season or so). JDR will go with Toefield for a couple games, and if he does nothing spectacular, Drew will gradually see more and more time. I don't believe JDR feels comfortable or right about declaring an unproven rookie the primary backup. However, it will be evident during the season that Drew is the most talented of what they have in the backfield.

.....and you are discounting Wimbush? That might be a mistake.

I've said this many times before, but Wimbush has more superstar potential than any of the Jag RBs not named Taylor. He was very behind when he got to Jacksonville but he has more raw talent than any of the other backs. Size, speed, balance, a little wiggle, he's the total package, do not ignore him.
