Out of Mind
Without looking at the stats, who do you believe to be a better hitter? Choose carefully.

Since I, and probably many other people here, never saw Mantle play, how would we judge him without looking at the stats.
MLB archives? :popcorn:Ok, I should have said without putting too much research into it, who do you believe is a better hitter. I realize Mantle was in a different ERA, so as Leroy Hoard pointed out, you can't really look only at the stats.

Lifetime Equivalent Average adjusted for All Time:Mantle: .340

Thomas: .341

I'd still go with Mantle though.

He is pretty much the best World Series player ever.
He won the triple crown
He has more "equivalent runs" adjusted for all time than Thomas does. Since their career lengths will be the same after this season, a counting statistic rather than a rate one (EqA) probably matters more.
I know you said "hitter", but Mantle played CF for the overwhelming majority of his career, which is a much more difficult thing to do than 1B or DH. Put another way, Mantle is a MUCH better hitter for a CF than Thomas is for a 1B/DH.

I would say Mantle in that there were fewer people producing like he did when he was playing. Thomas has been great, but there have been many other players that have been in his league over his career. And Mantle played in 12 World Series (with the Yanks winning 7 of them). IIRC, the Big Hurt hasn't even been in a Word Series.

His stats SHOULD be better than Mantle's.

So, you just ignore the era in which each played totally? That's bright.Tell me, is Frank Thomas the best player of his generation? Is he top three? Top five?He is a HoF player, but until recently that was not even a lock.Mantle is easily one of the greatest ballplayers to ever play the game.Thomas is really, really, really good. But he is not Mantle and it is questionable why anyone would argue that he is, to be honest.
