Who's your kicker for Week 16 (1 Viewer)

Any waiver wire gems you went after this week?

I have Garrett Hartley (Saints) but I'm a bit superstitious about having too many players riding in a single game (only 8 starters; already going with Brees and Kevin Smith). And if this is the shootout everybody thinks it will be, a bunch of extra points isn't going to give me much of an edge.

I went with Josh Brown, kicking at home vs. San Francisco who gives up a lot of points to kickers. I'm hoping to get 8-12 points from the K position and I think Brown gives me the best shot at this.

Who's your worthless little afterthought for the championship game?

Longwell at the moment because I don't want to roll the dice with Rackers outside in a game they don't need to really win. I like the dome kickers and Hanson is a possibility I am just concerned if NO goes up early DET wont be settling for 3 pts much.

Elam, he's kicking in a dome and they should move the ball enough to provide a few good opportunities for him.

Also sitting Rackers and looking for someone out there. Thinking about Bryant as it may be a tight battle with SD.

I picked him up as well. I have Bironas who has been a monster but I don't see the Titans getting many opportunities against the Steelers and They are my D.

Going with Elam this week. I rolled the dice with Carpenter last week and he put up a stinker with only 1 point.

I will be potentially playing Colston in addition to Thomas, but I am still playing Hartley regardless. Yes, there is a chance for nothing but extra points; but Detroit gives up so many points to kickers it is a rather safe play with upside and in a dome to boot.

I picked up Hartley for this week. Already rolling with Brees, Colston, and Calvin from this game. My prediction: 2-0 Lions.

Going with Matt Bryant in the nice weather and then Longwell in another league unless I get a decent weather report for NE in which Gostkowski will get the nod

Vegas has the over/under on the NO/Det game at 50.5 points. No other matchup is above 45. He does get 50+ kicks on occasions. And its in a dome.

I can't believe this, but I'm rolling the Hansen for the Championship game.

 That's my fear! Everybody is expecting the punters to be asleep in this one, but I'm so worried that this will be a 3-and-out punt fest! You guys now have me thinking I should just keep Hartley in despite having nearly 40% of my roster dependent on the NO-Detroit game! Still, it's a kicker and Brown has sadly been the only consistent player on St. Louis' horrendous offense.

Have Bironas and Elam- thought Bironas is the better play- but there are 20-25mph winds forecast in Nashville.. Elam in the dome might be choice.

I'm totally with this thread. Every point counts in the superbowl. Just put in a bid for Hartley, nothing better than a high power offense going against a horrible defense in a dome.

I also picked up Hartley this week...also starting Colston & Calvin. I was looking forward to week 16 with C&C all year...now I'm second guessing like a lot of folks in this thread.

I see Elam is questionable for this week....wtf? Don't make me play Hansen!

I'm thinking Kris Brown would be a nice play if it doesn't rain in OAK. That's if you DET/NO heavy owners want to balance your portfolio.

In one league, I am rolling with Bryant over Crosby because I do not feel like paying $2 for another kicker.

In another league, I had Crosby and Kasay. I just dropped Kasay, picked up Hartley, and plan on starting him.

In a third league, I have Bironas. Being a Steelers fan, I really do not want to play him. I'm looking at Kris Brown and Robbie Gould based on the consensus Dodds and Herman cheatsheets. Not sure yet what to do...

Earlier this year, I cut Kaeding and picked up Prater based on the cheatsheet strategy. I lost by 1 point. Prater scored 5 and Kaeding 10. So take this with a grain of salt...

I picked up Hartley in both my leagues for the Super Bowl. Playing Detroit in a dome == kicker platinum.

I've got Brees on one of my Super Bowl teams, and I figure Hartley is a nice hedge if several Saints drives bog down in/near the redzone and Brees doesn't throw a bunch of td's. That's unless of course the Saints are running the ball in for scores all day instead of passing.

I think Hartley is a good hedge bet against having too many players from the same team. If the offense stalls at least you get 3s.

Thank you for starting this thread (I hope) as up until now I was going to just passively start Longwell as I have been in recent weeks figuring that a field goal battle with the Falcons seemed likely. Pondering Hartley, especially with his match-up with the Lions, I decided to dig into the numbers and was pretty amazed at what I found.

If there's a spot in FBG's formidible data realm with team FG defense stats I was unable to find it so I settled in and did the game-by-game for both the Lions and Falcons. Here's what I found:

The number of field goal attempts allowed was somewhat close, but the Lions have had more FGs attempted against them: 27 compared to 22 against Atlanta.

Teams have been more successful in their FG attempts against the Lions. 24 FG scored against them compared to only 17 against Atlanta.

Of course the Lions have been much more generous with the extra points as well. A whopping 52 allowed. Atlanta has only given up 30.

Add it all up and you get 124 kicking points allowed by the Lions (to give you an idea Akers leads the league with 127 kicking points scored) while the Falcons have allowed only 81 kicking points. (28 kickers have scored more than this. The 29th place kicker, Janikowski, has exactly 81.) The trio of kickers the Saints have used this year bumps the ranking down one more place.

One final thing to really hammer the point home:

The Lions have allowed no less than 4 kicking points in every game this year (twice). In 12 of their 14 games they've allowed 7 or more. They've allowed 10 or more points 5 times. The median kicking points they've allowed is 8.

The Falcons OTOH have allowed 4 kicking points or less 5 times this year. In only 5 out of 14 games have they allowed more than 7. They've allowed mor than 10 points just once. The median kicking points they've allowed is 6.

While mileage will vary for different kickers, suffice it to say I have dropped Longwell and picked up Hartley. If you already have him I would humbly suggest that murphy's law aside sticking with him is clearly the way to go.

What about Nedney at St. Louis?
I like it, he only got 5 pts last time they met, but that was because the Niners only scored 5 TDs. Did I say only?
Is Nedney any good, just picked him up knowing nothing about my idiot kicker.

 Gostkowski put up 7 extra points last week in the rain. The Oakland D has mailed it in.NE could have put up 70+ last week.I like Kris Brown if Hartley is unavailable..

Just reread the OP so I did a quick look-see at the Niners. It's probably more proof of the fickle nature of kicking points than anything else.

They have yielded an amazing 38 FG attempts against them this season. 31 of those 38 have been made so there have been a higher percentage of misses than in the case of the Lions. The Niners have truly been more bend than break in the sense that they've allowed a comparatively modest 34 extra points this year, very close to the number yielded by the Falcons.

The 49ers have allowed less than 4 kicking points in only 3 times this year. In the other 11 games they've allowed 7 or more. They've allowed 10 or more points a whopping 8 times, with 10 being the median points allowed.

The one piece of bad news is that the Niners have been playing better defense overall of late. All 3 of those sub-4 point games have happened in the last 3 week (3 points to the Bills on 1/3 FG, 2 points to the Jets with no FG attempts, and 2 points to the Dolphins with just 1 missed FG attempt).

On balance I feel a little bit better about Hartley and the Saints than I would Brown and the Rams.

26/29 FG, 29/29 XP. Not bad.

Just imagine how bad you will feel when you out-think the room by playing kicker match-ups and it costs you the SB ....

That very well could happen because really it all comes down to the luck of the game, no guarantees. But you can put yourself in a good situation where its more probable for success. More red zones more chances. Plus most peoples starting line ups are set and we just need something to do before our Super Bowl.

Matt Bryant has been awesomely consistent this year but has had two below average weeks the past two. He's got a nice matchup in great weather and Garcia is back which should help the offense move the ball. I want to roll with him over Akers, but Akers has been money this year.

I cut Scobee to pick up Jeff Reed last week, thinking the Steelers-Titans game could be a tight 16-13 type game.

But since then, someone dropped Hartley, who I'll probably snag for my title game.

Just picked up:

Garrett Hartley NO (@DET, dome)

Longwell MIN (vATL, dome)

Got out of the games in the northeast with 'the weather' and trying for dome guys on winning teams with potentially high scores.

I like Bryant too, but he missed an easy FG last year, I think SD wins that game, and score a bit lower than NO / MIN.

I was planning on going with Matt Prater vs. Buffalo this week, but I've been feeling really uneasy about it because Prater has struggled as of later. This thread has me leaning towards Garrett Hartley now so I went ahead and picked him up but kept Prater just in case I change my mind. I feel kind of weird having two kickers on my team right now.

I am now extremely dependent on the Detroit vs. New Orleans game. Besides Hartley, I'm also starting Marques Colston, Pierre Thomas, and Calvin Johnson. That is four out of my nine starting spots.

Would it be the same feeling when you lose because you didn't make a change? Losing sucks no matter how it happens.
Yeah, but if you never really seriously consider it, you aren't going to kick yourself for not dropping Elam and picking up Josh Brown and Brown kicks 5 FGs. There's just so much you "could have done" that psychologically you really won't feel you did the wrong thing. But if you pick up Brown and STL gets shut out (entirely possible with that team) and Elam gets 10 pts and you lose by 7, well, let's just say you'll be thinking about that one for a loooooooooong time.

Nick Folk....'covers eyes as Romo enters the redzone'.

The waiver wire is full of 2-bit hacks like the KC kicker.

I have some thoughts/questions on Bironas this week....

Pro': Has been great, solid, strong leg. Pitts def is very tough and Tenn will prob stall out giving Bironas some try's.

Negative: Wind!!!! forecast 20-25mph..

The wind is a tough thing to figure- if he has a strong wind to his back- he could knock one in from 60... if it's against him- they might pass up the fg try.. Fisher is claiming he passed on the 49yd game winner because of the wind in Houston's open roof dome- which certainly wasn't 20mph +.. So that worries me... Then again, Fisher got some flack for passing on the FG try- so maybe he lets the FG try happen this week..

I'm wondering if any homers have an idea of how the stadium is situated and how the wind usually affects the play in that stadium? I beleive the wind is forecast to be westerly.

I think Bironas has a great matchup- the weather could be tricky though-- anyone think he's still a strong start (if the wind is still strong on game day).

I am also rolling with Hanson. He is the 5th ranked kicker in my league.

In my league scoring system, Seattle has given up the most points to kickers this year. Jay Feely was sitting on my waiver wire, so I picked him up. The NYJ offense should move well against SEA, thus I have Feely in over Bryant at the moment.

I'm a bit surprised Feely isn't being ranked higher. Seattle has given up the most FG's and rank 10th in XP, and hasn't improved much over the past few weeks (unlike SF, who has). I guess it could have to do with the lack of confidence in Favre right now.I wonder if Elam is in fact a good play - will Atl be able to move the ball on the ground? Will Minny running the ball take too much time from the clock? Others to consider.. Carney, Akers?

Just checking over Clayton's weather report for you Feely owners:

NY Jets at Seattle, 4:05 PM ET on CBS

A high of 27°F

Cloudy with a 70% chance of snow

Wind - ESE at 10 MPH

unfortunately I am stuck w/Kasay in one league and in the other I can sub him out and since I can't get Hartley thinking of going w/Hansen since I dont see the Saints D being ranked #1-3 as the cheatsheets have them ranked

also going with hartley over prater. everytime the the saints dont score a td, i get at least 3 points...

Kickers and Team Defense should be completely eliminated from fantasy football. A total crap shoot every week.
