Why backup love here for Houston, not Blaylock? (1 Viewer)

It seems like around these boards, C. Houston is regarded as the backup to Martin. Well, what about Blaylock?

2 years ago, Blaylock posted 529 yards rushing, 25 receptions for 244 yards, and 8 rushing TDs filling in for Holmes, before Blaylock himself got hurt and gave L. Johnson the opening to get more playing time.

Last year, Blaylock suffered a serious injury in week 5 and didn't get back on the field until the end of the season.

What did Blaylock do to show that he is not or should not be the backup in NYJ, and what has Houston done to show he should be or will be the backup over Houston? What am I missing here?

You cant really expect Blaylock to be as good as his numbers in KC say because of how dominant their O-Line is.

That being said im a little suprised Houston is just considered the backup with no questions asked. If Blaylock is healthy I think he win the job

Why the backup's backup love for Blaylock and not Leon Washington??

But anyways, I think the Jets long term answer at RB will be addressed in 2007. Depending on how Curtis fares, I'd imagine all of them get a shot this year.

Personally I think that when you look at Blaylock you are looking at a repeat of what happened with Trung Canidate - very good numbers in a very small amount of games for a very good offense. Similar physiques, similar running styles, similar circumstances. When Canidate went to a more conventional team, he couldn't get it done. I expect the same from Blaylock.

And I don't think Houston is the answer either, though running behind that O-line last year made it awfully hard to judge any RB. I think CuMar's replacement is going to come from an odd source or isn't on the roster yet. I'll put my bet on the odd source - DonTrell Moore - because his game is so similar to Martin's. But obviously that's a very long shot, with Moore being an UDFA, but I sure like what he brings to the table.

The jets are one of the teams that could've used Gerald riggs, jr IMO..I've read the coaches don't have much faith in blaylock

He is an injury guy who cant seem to take the full time role for more then a game or two. He is a 3rd down CoP guy (Much like Leon Washington will be). Anytime he is given the shot to show what he can do, injury strikes.Houston was a solid rb in college and had undiagnosed health issues. he could become a cmart type rb.

I like the sleeper pick of DonTrell Moore.

For one thing, taking Leon Washington in the fourth round told me Blaylock is on a short leash, even to make the roster. Washington and Blaylock appear to be very similar RB's.... meaning thrid down backs. What saves Blaylock is that he's more expensive to cut than to keep this year. In addition, Blaylock has a lot to prove from a durabilty standpoint. Coincidentally, so does Washington.

Houston has the size to carry the rock as a feature back.... no doubt about that, and he was projected to be a second round pick after his junior year.... that undiagnosed thyroid condition sidetracked any chance he had at that, however.

Moore is an intriguing prospect though. One of these three... Washington, Blaylock or Moore will almost certainly not make the roster. My guess is that either Washington or Blaylock don't make it. It would not surprise me if the Jets attempted to trade Blaylock. New regime, and they picked Washington, on a team that had a lot of holes on it. They could also afford the one time cap hit of releasing Blaylock.

This team has one too many 3rd down RB's on it. Houston is a power runner, Moore is similar to Martin....... and FB Askew who got some carries last year is still around.

I won't understand Blaylock until I understand his contract issue. He reportedly signed a 5-year $11.1 million deal, with $3.2 million upfront in signing bonus. That would indicate about $7.9 million in total base salaries over the five years, or an average of $1.6 million/season. But if you look at his salary data at url=http://nflpa.com/Media/playerProfile.asp?ID=30206]the NFLPA/url], you see that his highest pay will be in 2009, when he'll make only a little over $1 million. His other base salaries add up to just under $4 million,or about $4 million LESS than what you would have expected.

If Blaylock is getting paid so little, it's hard to imagine that he'd be cut. Besides, the guy was injured all year, so it's not like the Jets really know what they have in him. Then again, the chances that any Jets back get 250 carries is essentially nil.
