Why Did Pete Carroll Dump Hasselbeck? (1 Viewer)

Everyone knows team success is built on the play of the QB. You get a stud, you have a chance. You have a schmuck, it doesn't matter if AP is your starting RB.

He traded a pick for Whitehurst. He played with Jackson. He dropped a bunch of money on Flynn and traded up for Wilson

Or, he just could of freaking resigned Matt and searched for the future in the draft. Hasselbeck is easily in the top 15 of nfl qbs. He could of gone for a long term solution while keeping Matt... but no.

Matt Hasselbeck has had a nice career. I was glad when Tennessee signed him. But his days as a top15 guy have been over for a while.

Not IMO, and prob not in Carroll's. There's your basic disconnect. Not to say "you are dead wrong and I am dead right", just saying your perception of Hass as a top 15 guy at this point is prob different than some.Hass was a serviceable QB in a good system for a while. Now he's an older QB with a potentially used up arm who will be a serviceable backup. Sure, they could have kept him, but at what price?

A QB is more than a player, he is a leader. Sometimes, when changing regimes, coaches want to bring in their guy.

His own team does not feel he is worth starting after they signed him for 3 yrs/$20 mill, why would the 'Hawks think so? Don't get me wrong, I like him, but all he is good for is helping a contender that lost their QB or being a mentor to a newbie. I just don't see him taking a team on his back and going anywhere.

Seahawks apparently offered a 1 year deal at 7 M. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/18/hasselbeck-reportedly-offered-7-million-from-seahawks/ Titans got him with 3 yr 20 M $ deal.
Hawks actually offered him 2 years, according to Danny O'Neil, don't have a link on it at the moment though. He also didn't drop "a ton" of money on Flynn. The acquisition of Whitehurst and Jackson were attempts to find a fill in QB, until they were able to take a shot on a QBOTF. Neither player cost them too much, or set them back, in the long run. It remains to be seen if Flynn or Wilson have a real chance, but both are better than Jackson, by all accounts.

Pete Carroll and John Schneider's approach definitely isn't conventional, but as a long time fan of the team I am completely comfortable riding out this QB competition, and have absolutely no regrets letting Hasselbeck move on to the Titans.

1) Whitehurst and Jackson were temps meant to take the punishment of a rebuilding team that was completely devoid of depth at every position and dubious talent at starting positions due to the incompetent GM that was ousted a few seasons ago.2) They offered Hass a 1 year deal but being Hass' probable last contract he wanted a longer term and more money. Completely logical for both sides to let him go because he would not be starting this season. Carroll needed to have his guy and Hass is too old to continue into Pete's regime.3) There's not a bunch of money tied up in Flynn. It's well below average starting QB rates iirc.

1) Hasselbeck is not in the top 15 of NFL QBs2) They couldn't agree on a contract before the lockout3) They wanted to move away from that era and bring in their own. They have a young team and Hasselbeck would not be around with this group and he's not capable of winning a superbowl4) He's brittle..... he would not have survived the pounding Tjax took last year and they knew that
