Why Did Romeo Crenell Play Ken Dorsey (1 Viewer)

Weren't they pretty well set with Frye, Anderson and Quinn?

Did they really need to see a quarter of Dorsey? If he played great, would they have cut Derek Anderson? I don't think so.

Just seems like that was a quarter of time that Quinn could have used. Why spend those snaps on a guy that's getting cut?

Maybe they are trying to keep Quinn under wraps and want to sneak him on to their practice squad?

Maybe they were trying to see if Dorsey could be #2 (or Quinn 2, Dorsey 3) so they could continue to use him as a mentor to Quinn.

Uhhhhhh..... no.The practice squad is for cut players. They can re-sign a handful (five I think), but there is the risk another team will sign such a cut player to their active roster instead. The Browns' QB of the future was not under consideration for the practice squad.

Holmgren played Wallace for 3 1/2 quarters and then put Devine in for a bunch of handoffs, then cut him today. Never let Greene see the field for his make or break game. He survived the round of cuts only to be dropped later in the day to make roster room for Alvin Pearman. Who can tell what coaches want to see.

But the case for Dorsey is equally compelling. Teams usually don't play their third quarterback and he's been a tremendous mentor for Quinn. He played for offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski at the University of Miami and knows his offense. He has a sharp football mind and is more than willing to help Quinn, including on the sidelines. Even though he's started only 10 games, he provides a veteran presence which can be invaluable to Quinn.

But Crennel made it clear he won't keep Dorsey just as a mentor.

Could be what either Mimo or 3C's said. Either they didn't want to risk injury to Quinn during the sloppy 4th quarter play involving a field full of players who were all cut today, or they were still considering whether Dorsey was going to make the team.

Ive been wondering aloud.... very much aloud as to what theyre really doing there in Cleveland, and I can only draw the conclusion that they dont really know. I assume that's the point you were getting at, Joe. It seems to me and most of the rest of the world that Quinn is the best QB on the team. They dont want to play him the first few weeks because they want to protect him. Fine. I get it. But once you put a player in to start at any position who is not the best on the team, regardless of experience or lackthereof, it brings everything else into question. But beyond that, if youve got Quinn waiting in the wings to clearly be your future, and youve got Frye, who you deem as someone who's qualified to start for an NFL team and at the very least would make a very nice backup to Quinn(within about 5 or 6 weeks apparently), then why NOT keep Dorsey. Third QBs NEVER play. They are typically guys who either know the position better than or as well as the QB coach, or they know the system like the back of their hand. Dorsey would seem to benefit Quinn much more. But some teams get it and other dont, and its usually reflected in their records.

The whole world seems to think that Quinn should be starting and that Romeo will lose his job if he doesn't start him. Maybe they didn't want to add any more fuel to the fire if Quinn goes out there in the 4th and does more damage vs some 3rd string defense.

Crenell is probably the worst HC in the league.

Why did Mike Shanahan play Hackney for the fourth quarter and cut him? I don't think their is any controversy. If anything Dorsey isn't a hot commodity that other teams are eager to jump on and he knows enough of Frye/Dorsey and had played Quinn. By playing Dorsey he allows Ken a chance to showcase his skills for other teams but if no one signs him then Romeo can go into the season with three QBs and Dorsey is a phone call away if someone gets hurt. He knows the offense, system, coches, personnel. And Romeo has fostered good will with Ken by giving him a chance. I don't see those snaps as wasted, they could work in Romeo's favor moreso than giving Frye/Anderson/Quinn a few more garbage minute plays where the main priority is keeping starters safe in the fourth quarter of the last preseason game.

Joe,

Dorsey has taken Quinn under his wing and Romeo has loved what he's done especially transitioning from reading college Ds to pro Ds. On his play he should be cut. On his teaching ability he should be commended. I think Romeo was looking for a reason to keep him on the roster.

Was a joke. Of course it is the Browns we're are talking about here....

:loco:Sounds like Ken is a guy everyone likes to have around, it's just the reality that he is clearly option 4 of the QBs. As stated, it could be Crennel repaying him for being there and giving him a chance to showcase what he's got. Also, as stated, there's certainly an injury concern as 4th quarter play is sloppy and you have some practice squad heroes out there on defense looking to take someone's head off. Sounds like the QB situation is Cleveland is still a mystery so Crennell doesn't want to risk any of the three possible guys.

Not sure what the question is. The final week of preseason, almost every team has tons of players on the field who aren't going to make the final roster. Why single out Cleveland?

Derek Anderson <> Ken Dorsey.

We're talking about a #3 QB here. Who really cares in the grand scheme of things?

If you want a slightly better player, keep Anderson. If you want a significantly better mentor, keep Dorsey.
