I do not eat out much but I do not understand why I have to pay for someone to put a plate of food in front of me. If the waitress wants more money she should ask for more from the owner.

As you are probably aware, in many countries, tipping is not expected. Instead, they pay the servers more & raise the prices of their food.

One thing to consider with analysis such as this is whether they stayed with strictly Manhattan or they are using data from all five boros. If it is the former, then this data is extremely surprising.

The only thing I struggle with is tipping for carry out. I typically tip 20% for good service if I'm eating in a full service restaurant and 15% if the service was average, and 10% if the service was mediocre to bad. As for carry out, sometimes I tip a dollar or two and sometimes I don't tip at all. If it looks like they went through a lot of trouble packing it, then I will usually tip a couple of bucks.

Even the Hooters girls here in town are no good, except when some Eastern Europeans come here for summer work.

Because waitresses make below minimum wage. If tipping were eraditicated then they would have to be paid more by the owners and your meal would increase in price but you wouldnt have to tip. Id prefer tipping as then you can control some of that cost and it can lead to better sevrice but thats just me.
