Why does ANYONE have their fantasy championship in week 17 (1 Viewer)

The league I run, we have our Super Bowl in week 1. No bye issues, no "this player" isn't playing, and much more trash talk. We have six teams make the playoffs with week 3 held for bye weeks since six teams make it.

His does this work? Our first H2H game is week 3 (the bye week). If your team has a terrible week three, that is their incentive to go for a bye week since they can erase their bad week if their team comes through the following weeks. Our league ends in week 16 with 14 games played. 3 divisons with four teams each. Each team plays each other once.

When the week 16 games are done, we find out who gets the byes, unless one team dominates of course, and the playoffs go from there usin normal tie breakers. We simply go back to the week 3 games to see who scored what to know what teams move to the next round of playoffs, week 2. Then go from there to figure the week 1 winner and Super Bowl champ. Works great, keeps most interested to week 16, unless someone has a terrible year, and is unique to our league. You should try it.

The only variation we may try is to pick cards or something to change up weeks 1-3 for what playoff round each week represents. Keep teams in the dark as to what week means what. I like the idea since teams still have incentive to play since those playoff games are unknown.

i love the strategy involved of trying to guess who may or may not be playing week 17. i've played in 2 week title games. the 1st time, i dropped almost my entire roster and had started picking up week 17 players by week 14. my opponent didnt make a single change, and she lost by 80+ points. the 2nd time, i had manning and didnt grab a 3rd string qb and my 2nd string got hurt in week 16, so i just grabbed who was available. that qb had 2 TOs then got hurt and i lost by just a few points. i blame myself for the loss because I even tho I knew manning would sit week 17, i didnt make sure that I had 2 replacements.

if you know that your title game is week 17, then you should be taking that into acct when you draft, and picking up players. blaming week 17 means that you didnt adapt to your league rules.

The best reason for it is the simplicity it creates for scheduling in a 12 team league. 3 other teams in division twiceOther 8 teams onceLeaves 15 16 17 if playoffs are 5,6,7, or 8 teams. In one league we discuss changing every year but we won't give up the divisions or move from 12 teams so we always get stuck. If someone else has 12 teams and 3 divisions I'd be interested in your reg season schedule.
Pretty sure most leagues decided that it's better to have an uneven schedule than force a championship game in Week 17 and have a heavily skewed result.I mean, you might as well just flip a coin and have it be just as effective in determining the better team.
We have a 12-team league, and simply have a double-header on one week of the season, to maintain that 14 game schedule in only 13 weeks.

Enjoy week 17 Rodgers and McCoy owners :lmao: Of course, McCoy ####ed most of us over last week anyway
Rodgers owners knew this was a very strong possibility many weeks ago. If they didn't make any moves they're really stupid.
It's still the point that now you have to play without the top scoring QB in your most important game
I agree that week 17 championships are much harder than week 16 championships. Not everyone is able to stomach a challenge.

^^^ sameWe all hate playing the championship week 17, but can't get a consensus about how to best "fix" that. No one likes the idea of creating even more scheduling luck by not guaranteeing that every team plays each other at least once during the regular season (1st 14 weeks in our case). We get 6 into the playoffs...I've argued we should cut it down to 4, no more week 15 BYE for top 2 seeds (instead having semi-final that week, winners advance to week 16 championship. But, I also understand desire to have more teams in the mix down the stretch. It'd be like MLB suddenly taking away the wildcard
you could always have 2 three team playoffs 1 v 4 v 6 and 2 v 3 v 5 if you really want to have 6 make the playoffs. with the 2 top scoring teams from each 3 team match making the finals. Better than a week 17 superbowl.

Im in a twelve team IDP dynasty league and this is the second year in the row where I'll lose the Super Bowl in week 17 as the number one seed after getting a scoring record in week 16. Turning into the Bills here...

I'm probably the only person in my league that would want to do week 16 league championship so I'm pretty much stuck watching my team disappoint.

Bottom Line - do what works for you.Just as a point of reference though, this is my main league's 20th season and we have always played our championship the final week of the NFL season. Four teams make the playoffs. Here are the statistical breakdowns, through last week's semifinals.Week 16* (Semifinals)38 games in league history (Only two teams made the postseason in 1992, changed to four teams in 1993).22 times the higher seed has won.22/38 = .579 winning rate for higher seeds.Week 17* (Finals)19 games in league history14 times the higher seed has won.14/19 = .737Now, one can say the sample size is too small, not all higher seeds ought to be considered favorites, etc, etc, etc, and such critiques could be valid. But if one was to draw a conclusion from the above, it would have to be that Week 17 favors higher seeds (i.e.; "deserving" teams) more than Week 16 does. I would be curious to see data from other longtime leagues to see how they compare to the above.* In 1993, the NFL had an 18-week season. Our semis were Week 17 and championship Week 18.
Week 17 (Finals) should now read20 games in league history15 times the higher seed has won. 15/20 = .750And yes, I am the winner in the finals this year. :bowtie:
