Board tradition. I don't usually participate, but tradition has its merits in life. There's only so much pure reason gives us and where there are gaps in procedure and reason, tradition steps in. 

Plus, that thread means a lot to people that participate in it and brings a certain camaraderie and escape that otherwise isn't gotten on this board.

I don't go in his thread often but I have noticed that posters are generally nice to each other there.  So, to answer your question: No, separate threads wouldn't be better.
