Why does the draft start on a Thursday this year? (1 Viewer)

This is the biggest day of the year for my team. It has always been on the weekend for as long as I can remember. Why would the switch it to start on a Thursday?

+1

They managed to turn the thing into a two day event and now they are going to stretch that into a 4 day ordeal. I'm curious to see the ratings differences when this is all said and done. I can't imagine that this was a good move but the NFL usually gets these things right.

:goodposting:

Prime time audience and it won't eat up the whole weekend, I think it's great. And we get the drama of a top pick on day 2, then day 3...the 2.01 and the 4.01 that St Louis holds will be interesting. When owners/GMs/Coaches have a night to sleep on things teams like St Louis might find many teams wanting to trade with them when they wake up on Friday and Saturday.

Beat me to it. Thrusday night and even Friday night primetime are much more television friendly than Saturday daytime. Maybe not good for the draft parties, but prime time is better and keeping the NFL in the news an extra day or two is good also.

I assume they are shortening the 15 minutes allowed per pick in the first round so that it gets done before 1 AM? I don't mind Thursday night, unless it takes 6 or 7 hours like it did previously

Its all about the ratings. Primetime ratings are much higher than daytime ratings (see the Super Bowl, World Series, ect)

As for why Thursday again ratings, Friday night and Saturday night are the two lowest rated nights on TV.

It's come a long way, man.

Folks used to look at me like I was the Unabomber, just cuz I watched the NFL Draft. And played Fantasy Football. And was actively seeking a publisher for my manifesto.

Now, we're all Unabombers!

You're a young'un huh? I can remember when it used to be held on a Tuesday. It started like 8:30am EST and went all day long. I used to take that day off work to watch it.

TIME LIMITS: Round 1: 10 minutes per selection. Round 2: Seven minutes per selection. Rounds 3 through 7: Five minutes per selection.

I used to pretend I was sick so I could stay home from school and listen to it on the radio on Tuesday morning, before it was ever on TV.

How am I going to get bombed and throw things at the TV when the Stillers don't take an O-Lineman again? I gotta work in the AM>

Between this and the regular season games in Europe, the guy is doing more bad than good.
How are exposing the game and the draft to more people bad?
To take a home game away from a team just to get more exposure for the game is beyond ridiculous. Give them a preseason game. And I always enjoyed the noon Saturday start for the draft. Get together with some buddies, beers, pizzas, and relax all day with the 1st few rounds. Thats more of a personal thing though.

I heard this being discussed on Sirius NFL (I think) how the new format can change the draft. Teams who typically aren't the best drafters will have more time to regroup if they don't get their guy in round 1 (for example). But I can also see how it could allow for more player/pick movement overnight.

Still one of the biggest scams going.

I think I'll like the new format.

Last year my wife got on me about hanging out with buddies all day/night Saturday and lounging on the couch all day Sunday. This year I promised her I won't do anything draft related on Sunday and do whatever she wants. That made her happy. :pickle:

Not if you get your water from a well instead of town water.

I think I liked it on Sat/Sun.

I also think they could switch it to Mondays starting at 7 a.m., with 45 minute time limit between picks, and I'd still watch.

Frankly, I think it'll be improved, and here's why:

After Thursday, we will get all the 1st round analysis out of the way. Friday will be great because the commentators, writers etc. will HAVE to discuss the 2nd/3rd round picks. It was always a major complaint of mine that the analysis seldom went beyond the first round, when in fact anyone STILL WATCHING was desperately interested in that no-name from Bethune-Cookman. So it's kind of a good thing that we will have one day to digest the first round, then we can spend the next day discussing the picks that are actually happening.

I also think the extra day might give NFL teams the same breather, and we might see a lot more trades. Which would be great, who doesn't like trades?
