Why hasn't bowling caught on in America? (1 Viewer)

More than 43 million people go bowling at least once a year in the US.

Why hasn't professional bowling caught on in America?

Are you kidding?  Mark Roth and Marshall Holman occupy two of my four Mt. Rushmore positions for greatest sportsmen ever.

Best sport movie ever- Kingpin.  The expression "Bowl me Over" is common vernacular.  Bowling is woven into the fabric of American society as is Kegling and nine pins.  Apparently you do not follow programing on The Ocho where you can see bowling everyday and twice on Sunday.

It's a mystery.  Scoring seems high enough to keep even the most agressively incurious engaged.

It's a million times more entertaining to watch than golf.
I have been an avid golfer for 30+ years and our league has a running pool where I have a chance to win $500+ each major. Despite this, I still haven't watched more than 10 minutes of golf in the past decade. It's brutal, but bowling would be worse.

If you have Amazon Prime, there are over 100 episodes of a 1970s game show called Celebrity Bowling available for streaming.  Teams of A-list (Sammy Davis, Bob Newhart) and B-list (Max Baer, Adam West, the Brady Kids) celebrities bowl a game using best ball scoring and win valuable prizes (Haggar slacks, Amana Radar Ranges) for viewers at home.

It's a hoot.

catch this via Kodi on the reg

folks who grew up in NYC during the '70s will remember "Bowling For Dollars", hosted by N.Y. Mets shill Bob Murphy ... was on Channel 9 up here (WOR),  and had regular schmoes, schlubs, and broads literally rolling for coin:  "OK, Morty from Forest Hills, pick up this spare, and go home with TEN DOLLARS!!"

Max Baer Jr. and Adam West are nobodies B-list stars my friend.  They don't get any bigger than Jethro Bodine and Batman.

Probably because I can name more soccer players than pro bowlers

(David Beckham, Reynaldo, Mia Hamm vs. Earl Anthony and Don Carter)

Although now I've heard of Mark Roth and Marshall Holman...wait a minute, wasn't he the guy that starred opposite Angie Dickinson in that TV show?

Edit to add: forgot Pele

I always thought it was interesting that a pro bowlers throwing arm was built like a bodybuilder and their other arm was built like a T Rex arm.

The real problems are that you never know exactly when the game will end. I mean sometimes it is ten frames. Sometimes it is like ten plus one. Sometimes it is ten plus two. You literally never know until all of a sudden its like wow he got another strike the game isn't over?????

Its also weird how in most sports like basketball and football your best attack angles are from the middle of the field. In bowling you inexplicably start on the outside until the very end when you center it. What kind of angle is that?

I really wish these guys could sub out too. I mean sometimes a guy goes up there and he leaves the 5 pin. There is probably another guy that never misses the 5 pin. Why cant you bring that guy in for that pin and then put Pete Webber back in?

Have you seen the sponsorships on the clothes those bowlers wear? It is ridiculous. Just say your team name or your name. Thats it. Like I need to fly emirates or get a rhino.

Rhino is nice but I prefer my old Black Hammer.

It's the foul line.  If they just removed that and let bowlers run down the lane closer to the pins, it would be a lot more entertaining.

How many folks know how to properly score a spare or a strike?
It's like hand scoring a baseball game.  How do you score a simple out when a team is playing the shift?  Why is the 3rd baseman playing in shallow right field?

You mean besides it being something fun for a game or two and then you don't need to do it again for another couple of years because it bores the hell out of you?
