why isn't kitna benched? (1 Viewer)

kitna has been far less than stellar. he threw a key INT this past week and has been inaccurate for a good part of the year too. he is 34 and detroit is certainly out of the playoffs.

why not try out the future a little? they have nothing to lose except to give McCown some experience. sure, hes not the best QB, but they should at least give it a try and see it he can work in Martz's system.

keeping kitna in makes no sense to me. there are two possible reasons for this, and to me they're both weak:

1) mccown sucks and they don't ever want to try him out.

2) martz wants to salvage the season so he can get a HC job elsewhere

3) they think they're making the playoffs.....??

so, i'm just a little  over here, and you can feel free to bail me out.

If McCown is the future the Lions are screwed. Besides Kitna is having a pretty good year.

because he gives them the best chance to win? Kitna has been decent this year...a lot of the late turnovers have been more the fault of the atrocious line he plays behind than anything he's done.

and i'm pretty sure those are three reasons you list....not two :lmao:

No. He hasn't. He was 19-30 against SF, and for the year?206 for 326 (63.2%)

that's no where close to inaccurate.

He's also 14th in passer rating, ahead of Favre (16), Eli Manning (17), Delhomme (20), Roethlisberger (22), McNair (24), and Vick (27) among others. Should they all be benched too?

1. because Kitna has the highest QB rating in Detroit in probably 15 years.

2. because McCown hasn't shown any potential for being anything more than a journeyman backup

all i can say is watch a game... you're way off on your assessment of kitna. he is prone to trying to do too much on occasion, but he is FAR from the reason(s) that the lions aren't winning. not to mention that the coaching staff and players view him as a leader.

kitna has made about 4 bad plays this year

2 of them(1 was this week) were on fourth and long with about a minute left in the game

he is doing as good as any player on the team

i understand he is not the future but he will probably be there for at least next year

I'm not a big Kitna fan, but this guy does not deserve to be benched. He is playing well although I do agree he is not the long term answer.

I think the main problem with the Lions is the O-line. It sucks. Not quite as bad as Arizona or Oakland but close. There are lots of other problems too, but the O-line has been below average for years now.

kitna isnt the problem. He's not the future either, but its not like they have a stud (or even a possible starter) waiting in the wings.

Its better that he stays in, if for no other reason than to help the development of roy williams and kevin jones. Put in Mccown or someone else, and they will likely regress.

NFL head coaches who put players in "to see what they have for the future" end up not sticking around to see that future. Fans want to see the young guys get a chance to play, coaches want to win games.

Way off base. That INT he threw was a 4th and goal from about the 15 in the 4th quarter if I'm not mistaken. He had to take a chance and throw it up for grabs. Kitna has been a huge bright spot this year for the Lions and has performed well.

I don't think Martz is a very big fan of Mccown. Remember late in camp and early in the season when there was a big debate on who would be the #2 between Mccown and Orlovsky. Apparently it had to do with Mccown's ability to learn the Martz system. Add the pocket qb vs scrambling qb and I don't think Kitna is going anywhere. Like many people have said, Kitna is not the Lions problem. He's not a superstar but he's very servicable in this offence.

Because he's starting for my fantasy team and I already called Marinelli and his boys and told them that if Kitna's buttcheeks so much as grazed the bench, there would be flaming bags of doody launched at his and all of his assistants' homes. Not just your garden variety ones, either, giant ones that need to be lit by multiple torches and launched by trebuchet.

I dont think one can say a guy with decent completion % and a league leader in completions is the problem- be surprised he is doing as well as he is with a depleted o-line and a fraction of the WR talent he was supposed to haver. he certainly doing better than Joey ever did, and granted losing to SF was a big loss for them b/c it was one of the few they thought was a lock to win.

Heard Roy Williams on the radio last night. I know he likes to talk but he said he's licking his chops with the Cardinals thinking they can man up their offence.

Say what you want about Mike Martz, he's a good judge of quarterback talent.

Kitna really hasn't been bad, just middle-of-the-pack.

If Martz thought he could win with McCown, he wouldn't hesitate to make the switch.

The only game I can say Kitna sucked in and should have been benched for was against Minny. They were up by 20 points or so. And Kitna gave Minney the ball 3 times in the fourth. Minny won the game.

If the Lions have any sense they'll take o-linemen with their first 7 picks.

But they have no sense, since Matt Millen's football IQ in in single digits. They'll probably draft another bust at WR.

I just keep thinking we could have had Matt Leinhart. He was right there and we took Ernie instead. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing what Josh can do.

1) I love Roy as a Longhorn (not the person the player..the person is an arrogant, elitist ##### but that's a whole other story) , but he needs to shut t.f.u. when he's talking to the media. The Dude is getting a reputation as a real clown for always guaranteeing stupid things and mouthing off.2) To the original poster: Have you watched a Lions game this season?I hate the Lions. I think they are garbage. I am a bears fan. That said...forget the stats that these other dudes threw out. This Lions team over the course of the last 4-5 games has really impressed me as a TEAM. Kitna gained alot of respect when he got up in that dude's face, and that offense plays for him. He also actually looks kind of sick out there when he isn't getting "bomar-ed" because of his O-Line. Martz loves him. Martz hates McCown. I honestly think the Lions are better than their record would indicate and that has a lot to do with a good, solid QB....and the number 7 QB in fantasy according to this very site's premium content.

kitna Walter has been far less than stellar. he threw a key INT this past week and has been inaccurate for a good part of the year too.

keeping kitna Walter in makes no sense to me. there are two possible reasons for this, and to me they're both weak:

1) mccown Brooks sucks and they don't ever want to try him out.

2) martz Shell wants to salvage the season so he can get a HC job elsewhere

This 'always blame the QB for a bad record regardless of the facts' mentality has always puzzled me. There are many things to blame for the Lions' record, the QB isn't one of them. There's no reason to sit Kitna for McCown because there's no reason not to have Kitna back as starter next year.

I'd bet a whole whackload of money they go defence for sure in the first, possibly even second round.

Why all the Martz? Starting/pulling QB decisions are HC territory. I know Marinelli has more of a defensive coaching background, and no doubt Martz would have input, but it wouldn't matter if McCown was giving MM alcohol rub-downs after practice, unless Marinelli chose to change it wouldn't happen.
