Why very little warning about Le'Veon Bell contract? (1 Viewer)

I'm wondering if anyone read any warnings about this Le'Veon Bell contract situation before the season? I don't remember seeing anything on footballguys. I'm an annoyed Bell owner, as you can see. I realize it ultimately was my decision to draft him, but I pay this site to warn me about possibilities and risks associated with first round picks, in particular.

It was the same situation as last year.  Bell held out the entire pre-season and up until the final week before the season started everyone figured this year would be the same.  It wasn't until going into the final week before Week 1 that there were any rumblings that he was going to hold out until the season.  It was fairly clear in almost all publications I read (including FBG) what the risks were.

Wat? It was no secret he was holding out.
Sure. But, it wasn't reported with the disclaimer and warning it should have warranted. He was a consensus top three pick. The risk of a hold out should have dropped his projection to end of first round.

I disagree that the risks were laid out properly. And, I think prognosticators should be to blame for not giving this situation the attention it deserved.

It was well laid out.  Everyone seemed to ignore the warnings because the same shinanigans that he played last year resulted in a very different outcome.

So you knew he was holding out, yet someone needed to lay out the risk?

I disagree. Don't think it was well laid out at all. I agree with your second point, though. My point is that fantasy football experts should not have ignored the warnings.

What exactly did you think a holdout meant? You didn't know the possibilities of a holdout without the "experts" telling you?

Yes. That's partly what I pay footballguys to do.
I think almost everyone can figure out the risks of a holdout without needing to be told everything.  It's like if you are eating ice cream do you need someone to explain that it might be cold and if you don't eat it fast enough it will drip all over your hands?

Redraft league... we held our draft on the evening of Friday, Aug 31st (Labor Day weekend)... league made up of long time friends (26th season) and up until the morning of the draft I believe that everyone thought he was walking through the door the following Monday - just like he did last year. It was reported (IIRC) later that afternoon that there was some speculation of a longer holdout.

Bell went 3rd overall in our draft - to a hushed crowd - and the same Owner grabbed Conner with 3rd pick in round 6 to a chorus of OH MAN... I WAS GRABBING HIM NEXT! It all happened that fast.

So in my view, it was very late breaking "speculation" (not  even news worthy) that this year turn out the way it has.

Them's the breaks.

Bell's situation is a first for the NFL.  Never before has such a high profile player sat out almost an entire season over a contract dispute.  Given that information plus the fact that Bell held out the previous season nobody could foresee this happening.  I'm going to to guess that not even Bell himself knew.
