The Eagles used the "Wide Nine Defense" to slow down the Cowboys offense Sunday night and get in Tony Romo's face. The wide nine defense is where the defensive ends line up in a sprinters position outside the shoulder of the tight end or guard which allows them to quickly rush the QB. The linebackers are then responsible for covering the B gaps and the safeties are asked to help stop the run. Could this defense help other teams in the NFL? Could the Patriots be successful with this? Of course it depends on the personnel, how effective the offense can protect the QB, and how affective the RB is in pass protection. Thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken, they have used it the last two games and held their opponents to 13 and 7 points respectively? Obviously this would be a disaster when facing a QB like Vick because it would leave the entire middle of the field open to run.

This defense held DeMarco Murray to 9.3/carry. The Eagles offense putting up so many points so quickly is the only thing that limited him from having a huge day.

Hmmmm. Why did it work against Grossman and Romo but not Fitzpatrick and Alex Smith? This seems like a good scheme against a pure pocket passer. Well we know Grossman sucks...

its worked against all qbs... theyre among the best pass defenses in football. it hasnt worked in stopping the run. theyre atrocious at stopping the run

I just like watching the wide9 defense to see the DEs do that goofy head-turn on the ground kind of thing... i guess they are looking for the ball to be snapped but they look hilarious.

If I'm another team I'd be a bit concerned about copying a defense that gave up 8.5 yards per carry.

from what I understand, they have actually gone away from it some (moved the ends in slightly) in recent weeks to help the run D

This. We have some really good ends in T.Cole and Babin(who had a career high in sacks last year with Washburn as the DC in Tenn, but looks to beat even that personal record of his this year. He had 12.5 last year). The key is having experience/good LB's. We started the season with a 4th round pick at MLB - Casey Matthews and that was a big mistake. Since then, we put Jamar Chaney back in the middle, decided not to sell out against the pass as much, and have produced good results since then. We still have a 5th round LB Brian Rolle going for us on the outside, but in time, as we gel more, it should be exponentially more effective. Wait until we play Seattle and Miami....

It's the ebb and flow of the league and a big reason for the Niners success so far this year.A lot of defenses have been geared toward stopping the onslaught of passing in the league.In the meantime, the Niners have built their offense around the run game and have been one of the prototypes this yearfor how to exploit these pass-oriented defenses.The Philly and Detroit games are the best 2 examples.

Because it isn't the scheme? This isn't like the 4-6, or the zone blitz. This isn't a new defense, this is a 4-3 where the DEs ignore the run, and the LBs (bad ones in this case) take up the slack against the run.

You do realize this is the Detroit Lions base defense they have been running for some time now. Which is why they give up chunks and chunks of yardage on the ground to RBs because the ends are spread out to the 9 gap to increase pressure on the opposing QB. This is very prone to the opponents running game if it is not shored up appropriately.

Other prime-time example of this was Detroit vs the Bears. Its fantastic when you're up big as the Eagles were or when you have a OC like Mike Martz whose shown to be stubborn and unwilling to adjust play calling w/o tape review and probably offensive line coach Mike Tice threatening to kill him in weekly meetings. If I remember right the lions were only up 7-10 points for a lot of the second half but it felt like they were up 21 like the Eagles were. Watching that game you realized unless you have highly talented offensive line its something you can only counter with play calling to exploit it or formation changes with additional blockers or TEs to at least chip the end. As the game went on the ends got wider and wider the Bears tackles had no hope of getting into position to make a decent block without false starting.

This is the modern NFL where pass rush is more important than stopping the run, especially if your offense can score enough points to force your opponent to pass.

the early season struggles of the Eagles D wasn't really a scheme issue, more personnel- players adjusing to new scheme as well as finding out who they should be playing, poor tackling, and mental issues. The LB's and S have to make plays in the run game and they were whiffing

I like it, but I think the Eagles are best when they are mixing some of Jim Johnson's old blitzes in with it so they are unpredictable
