The Eagles used the "Wide Nine Defense" to slow down the Cowboys offense Sunday night and get in Tony Romo's face. The wide nine defense is where the defensive ends line up in a sprinters position outside the shoulder of the tight end or guard which allows them to quickly rush the QB. The linebackers are then responsible for covering the B gaps and the safeties are asked to help stop the run. Could this defense help other teams in the NFL? Could the Patriots be successful with this? Of course it depends on the personnel, how effective the offense can protect the QB, and how affective the RB is in pass protection. Thoughts?
It's the ebb and flow of the league and a big reason for the Niners success so far this year.A lot of defenses have been geared toward stopping the onslaught of passing in the league. In the meantime, the Niners have built their offense around the run game and have been one of the prototypes this yearfor how to exploit these pass-oriented defenses. The Philly and Detroit games are the best 2 examples.
