Wife is an idiot. Probably about to get identity stolen (1 Viewer)

So she gets an email from our bank talking about some account number and that it is URGENT she contact them about our mortgage right away.  So, she does.  She provides her social security number.  She then walks up to me asking me for my social.  I ask why, she tells me, I tell her to hang up the F#####NG phone.

So of course I look up the number she called and it has no affiliation with our bank.

So, what should I do to make sure they don't steal all her money?

I have her calling the bank right now to see what they can do as far as fraud alerts or whatever.

This of course doesnt help if they want to open up other accounts in her name.

God how stupid.

We don't even have a mortgage with our bank.

Freeze her credit asap.

The scammer probably won't be able to access your wife's bank account unless she actually gave them the account number.

What they want is a clean SS# along with a matching name and address. With that combo, they can make a pretty good life for themselves for the next month or so.

edit: actually they could get access to the bank account if they got ahold of a lazy bank rep.

Ok, so I had her call the general customer service for our bank.  It turns out that number IS affiliated with our bank and does correspond with their mortgage department.  However, regarding the account number provided in the email, we have no such account number in either of our names.

So I guess we dodged a stupidity bullet, but still no idea why they are contacting us about an account we dont have.  It doesnt show on our credit reports either.

did they actually confirm it was them who called?  Scammers can spoof almost any phone number they want now making you think the call is legit via caller ID.

Well they got an email to contact them - I'm wondering if they thought they would get emailed back

They will usually spoof the email address. It may look like it says something like (security@usbank.com), but if you hover your mouse over the address, you'll see that the actual address is something like "usbanksecurity1234@gmail.com". So you would actually be replying to some scammer's gmail account.

Better apologize for the, hopefully only verbal daggers you hit her with.  ;)

I understand that.   My point was NewlyRetired said they could Spoof Phone numbers which is entirely true.  But the OP received and email and they called the number in the email that is allegedly with the bank.

I'm just guessing the Spammers were hoping for an email because of what you said

One of the tactics of phishing schemes is the urgent call to action, along with misspelled words.

So the only real idiot was the guy that made a message board post asking what to do instead of looking up what to do or contacting the bank first.

Horrible Friday thread, bad trolling or just dumb.

Let me guess the update. The person that contacted your wife was female and from the bank. She feels horrible and wants to take you and your wife out for drinks. Did the banker mention she is single?

Had a pretty good one on Tuesday. The call showed up on my caller ID as AT&T. I pick up. Something I rarely do. Guy with a heavy Indian accent tells me I was overcharged last month $56. The accent has me thinking of those guys calling from "Microsoft" about the virus on my computer (I have a Mac).

He asks if I want the money in the form of a gift card or credited back to my account. I say credit the account. He then asks to verify who I am. I give my last name only and he provides the first name. Then he asks for my AT&T password. I told him to kiss my ### and hung up.

It was extremely well done. Be careful about those calls "from" AT&T

Ever hear of spoofing?

Go lock every one of her credit reports.

Oh, good, I'm only like the tenth person to say that.

This whole thing is confusing. If your wife called the number and you say it's a legit number for the bank, why was the csr taking her ss# especially if you don't have a mortgage there?

When do they go camping?

Exactly.  Who knows.  I told my wife that giving your social to someone over the phone is really stupid, especially when it was because of an email telling you to call them right away.

No excuse for you to refer to your wife like this.  I’m guessing you also made her feel accordingly.  She made a mistake.  You dishonored her.
samurai culture now demands that you make her tea for having dishonored her in your rice paper cool ancient dojo take that to the bank bromigo

My wife had her identity stolen and used this winter. Opened accounts, rented a car, the whole nine yards.

Freeze her credit at all four agencies.

Visit a social security office and create a myId account so you can lock down and watch her social.

Do most husband and wives have separate accounts? I don't even understand how that works.
HIS account is for home improvement purchases, car repairs, groceries, etc.

HER account is for clothes shopping.

Not really?  My wife and I don't have his/hers accounts. We have our account.

We have separate accounts. My wife is a stay at home mom. If she had access to my account and that much free time, we would lose the house in a matter of months.

Yep! We have separate accounts and we never argue over money. I think it makes no sense to have shared accounts.

My husband and I have the same account, but sub accounts that are just ours. We put so much money each week for hobbies or solo trips.

Dang she gave out her full social security number without confirming who she was talking to? Start hiding everything...
