I have a friend (same one from the top two Neil entries) that is obsessed with Laura Nyro. Unfortunately he’s not on this site. I don’t know much about her aside from a few songs.

Bob Dylan had an unprecedented record contract w Columbia in the 60s, blowing unit compensation rates, creative control and publishing precedents out of the water in a way that really made album rock possible. The first artist to beat that contract was Laura Nyro, based on the hits she penned "for" 5th Dimension, her famous "audition in the dark" for Clive Davis & the negotiating skill of the world's most duplicitous human being, David Geffen. Quite a thing for a female artist, but that's how immediate & compelling was her beauty to those who heard her contemporarily. She is the only artist in any medium who is an actual load-bearing wall in the structure of my personality and i actually got to spend a few days watching her record. If i hadnt just started a thing....
