My thing with American cheese is that there is no instance where it wouldn't be better if you substituted American for a Cheddar or Jack, burgers included.

Give me a burger with a slice of Tillamook over American any day.

I’ll allow it in dips, but pretty much any time I’ve tried it in an entree I come to the conclusion that it would be better without it
