***Official - Dan Lambskins Top 50 Cheeses*** (1 Viewer)

43 - jarlsberg
Country of origin- Norway (not Switzerland)

Jarlsberg is a mild, semi-soft cheese made from cow's milk. It's known for its large, round holes and sweet, nutty taste. Jarlsberg is a Swiss-style cheese that's a cross between Gouda and Emmental. It's made with a patented propionic acid that gives the cheese its flavor and holes

I’ve only seen this in some sort of jarlsberg dip at Kroger. It’s pretty tasty. I’m sure someone is going to chime in with a jarlsberg truffle burger they had at the local hipster brewpub

I like this one a lot. Not a fancy cheese snob, but as Swiss slices for a sandwich go, this is up there.

41 - Bread Cheese
Country of Origin - Finland

Bread cheese (Finnish: leipäjuusto or juustoleipä; Meänkieli: kahvijuusto; Swedish: kaffeost or brödost), known in the United States as Finnish squeaky cheese, is a Finnish fresh cheese traditionally made from cow's colostrum. In America, cow's milk is generally used but can also be made with goat milk.[1] Commercially available versions are typically made from cow's milk. The cheese originally comes from Southern Ostrobothnia, Northern Finland, and Kainuu.

An interesting entry to say the least. Can eat it cold, or also heat it up. I think there is about a 1 degree difference between melting and complete disintegration

46 - Edam
Country of Origin - the Netherlands

Edam is a semi-hard cheese that originated in the Netherlands, and is named after the town of Edam in the province of North Holland. Edam is traditionally sold in flat-ended spheres with a pale yellow interior and a coat, or rind, of red paraffin wax. Wikipedia

a rather unremarkable cheese, its inclusion in a cheese plate is unlikely to warrant any excitement, but also unlikely to have any complaints

For Americans, often found in gift baskets during the holidays. What's not to love here?

49 - Chevre
County of Origin- France (I think)

Goat cheese is a cheese made from goat's milk. It has been made for thousands of years and is known for its tangy, rich flavor. Goat cheese is lower in fat, cholesterol, and calories, and higher in calcium than similar cheeses made from cow's milk

Not a great cheese by itself, but it lends itself to mixing well with herbs and fruit and whatever.

love this one, so good in salads

I had to google this as I could only picture Cheesy Bread. This is good stuff. Don't think to pick it up often, but enjoy it warm.

40 - Manchego
County of origin - Spain

Manchego is a semi-hard cheese made from the milk of Manchega sheep in the La Mancha region of Spain. The cheese is aged for 60 days to 2 years, and its flavor and texture sharpen with age. Manchego has a firm and compact consistency, with a buttery texture and small air pockets. The cheese is ivory-colored, with a distinctive herringbone rind. The rind is inedible and protects the cheese's interior while it ages

Another good charcuterie board cheese, lack of versatility keeps it down in the rankings

Manchego too low for me. You get a good imported Manchego and it's the star of the charcuterie board.

I disagree on its lack of versatility. It can be used in grilled cheeses, mac and cheese, I even had a Spanish carbonara once with Manchego and jamon and it was incredible.

Cheez Whiz for the win

With all the amazing cheeses of the world, if this and American crack any top 50, it'd be like if Killer Sofa made the top 50 horror list. Just no. I'm already prepared to be disappointed.

I've seen online popularity survey rankings with "nacho cheese" at #1.

Nacho cheese is a cheese sauce made from cheese. Not sure if that qualifies. But I guess if we're counting processed, canned canola oil made to look sort of cheese-like why not?

A good, properly made queso is delicious.
You’re being a wet blanket. It’s Dans list 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's a little friendly payback for being the horror movie curmudgeon in a previous thread.

39 - Brick Cheese
Country of Origin- USA 🇺🇸

Brick cheese is a cheese originating in Wisconsin, United States, made in brick-shaped form due to using actual bricks to form the shape. The color ranges from pale yellow to white with an orange rind

aka Detroit Style Pizza cheese. Not much else to say. Food purists can rest easy knowing that a certain other regional pizza cheese will not be making an appearance. Sorry St Louis but your pizza is an afterthought to most people

This is a top 5 cheese for me, definitely #1 for charcuterie boards, possibly #1 overall.

It surely doesn't belong in the 40s with cottage cheese and goo out of a can.

Excited about thread. So far, thread does not deliver. My hopes remain high.
I need to find another 15-20 cheeses and then compile the rankings

Morning looks pretty quiet so I think I can get a few released tomorrow. If not we’re looking at Monday

Yeah, while I prefer another Italian style cottage cheese in my lasagna, I've had lasagna with cottage cheese and never complained
If all I have is cottage cheese, I'm going with a bechamel instead.
Basil/garlic béchamel is great for a white lasagna (used to do one with shrimp, scallops, crab)

38 - pimento cheese
County of origin- USA 🇺🇸

Pimento cheese is a creamy spread that's often called the "pâté of the South". It's made with cheese, mayonnaise, and pimentos, and is commonly served with crackers and vegetables or as a sandwich filling

In hindsight I’m not sure this should qualify, but I’m allowing it. Expecting those south of the Mason Dixon line will be ok with its inclusion.

Fear not , there are still several entries likely to elicit some debate, but we won’t see those until the top 20

It’ll be smooth sailing on the seas of cheese for a bit

I like pimento cheese, but you are really using cheese loosely here (which I'm fine with). It's usually a cheddar cheese "dip". Seems redundant.

American cheese definitely has its place
It's biggest place is probably the fancy "queso" that many Americans love at Mexican places.

"Queso" is white American pasteurized processed cheese food product. The cheapest stuff you can buy at the deli.

So impressive. Convince Americans that the cheapest cheese they can buy at the grocery store is some fancy Mexican cheese.

Just as impressive as take-out Asian places selling Americans on mayo and sugar being a fancy Asian sauce.

Haha. And If it wasn't clear, I love white American pasteurized cheese food product.

And I always celebrate anytime somebody can figure out a way to get 800X profit out of something and the consumers feel good about it. That's what I call a WIn-WIn.

With apologies to the Eagles

Well, I'm running down the road tryin' to tighten my load

I've got fifty cheeses on my mind

Four go with bologna, two come from Sonoma

others grate down to the rind

Take it easy, enjoy that cheesy

Don't let the size of parm wheels drive you crazy

Sometimes it’s from a can

Don't even try to understand

Just find a place to make your stand and enjoy cheesy

Well, I'm turning round the corner, inside my local Kroger

And such a fine sight to see

It's a smorgasbord, of cheeses Lord

Slowin' down to take a look at Brie

Sample Lady, don't say maybe

I gotta know about curds you just gave me

Feta, Orda and Edam

I may never poop again

So get’s back to the list from Lamb, he makes it cheesy

This is another in a long list of reasons why Tex-Mex/Mexican is rarely good outside of the SW US. Only the real bottom of the barrel places use American as the full queso recipe. Adding a little to get the sodium citrate in there is common for restaurants if they don't use sodium citrate on its own but legit places will at a minimum add other cheeses like Oaxaca, Asadero, etc.

42 - cheez-whiz
Country of origin - USA 🇺🇸

Cheez Whiz is a processed cheese sauce or spread made by Kraft Foods. It was first sold in 1952 and is still in production today. Cheez Whiz is a creamy cheese dip made with real cheese and has a mild cheddar taste. It can be used as a topping for steak sandwiches, burgers, French fries, and nachos

It’s cheese enough for me. It has its uses, like being a subpar option for cheesesteaks. Might be what they use on chili cheese fries at some places

oops.. missed this one.

not cheese. at least it's low ranked.

Do you work for some cheese association or something?

Did not. Perhaps I should :)

37 - Fontina
County of Origin - Italy

Fontina is a cow's milk cheese that originated in the Aosta Valley of Northern Italy in the 1200s. It has a smooth and velvety texture, and its interior ranges in color from pale ivory to a rich straw yellow. Fontina is known for its superb melting quality and its mild, nutty flavor

Pretty good and versatile cheese

36. Taleggio
Country of origin- Italy

Taleggio is a semisoft, washed-rind cheese from the Valtaleggio region of northern Italy. It has a strong aroma but a mild flavor with a fruity tang. The cheese is made from cow's milk and has a distinctive rind. During the aging process, the flat, square wheels are washed with a salt brine, which gives the cheese its characteristic aroma and rind

Good cheese plate cheese, fun to say.

Tallegio smells like a pair of socks that have been worn everyday for 10 years without being washed, then dipped in feces.

It still deserves a higher ranking than cheez whiz. (y)
