***Official - Dan Lambskins Top 50 Cheeses*** (1 Viewer)

Cheez-It cheese and Cheetos cheese and white cheddar Smartfood popcorn cheese.

Where do they rank in the total cheese world?
Can you rank them in order if you know all of the flavors? For all you gamblers out there, I’m not allowing there to be an over opportunity on Lambskin’s recognition—pretty damn sure he’s got a handle on all three.
Leading last question: Anything better than a well-done or burnt Cheez-It in the snack world? And is the Tabasco Cheez-It an abomination or the best thing since sliced jalapenos?

I prefer the original cheez-its. They do offer an extra toasty one if that’s your thing

Best snack food cheese dust was the original planters cheese balls

Cheez-it and Goldfish are the kings of the cracker world.

I agree, the best "dust" is either cheese balls or Cheetos.

But cheesy cracker dust doesn't belong in a ranking of cheeses.

25 - Pecorino romano
County of origin - italy

Pecorino Romano is a hard, salty Italian cheese made from sheep's milk. It's known for its sharp, tangy flavor and rich butterfat content. The cheese is produced in Sardinia, Lazio, and the Tuscan Province of Grosseto

Good crumbly / shred cheese but not as good as a similar, yet to be mentioned cheese

24 - ricotta
Country of origin - italy

Ricotta is a smooth, creamy, Italian cheese made from whey left over from other cheeses. The name ricotta comes from the Latin word recoctus, which means "cooked twice

Ricotta is a good source of protein and calcium, and is lower in fat and calories than other cheeses. It can be used in sweet or savory dishes, and is often used as a substitute for higher-fat cheeses

I’m generally using it in lasagna or stuffed shells or something, but can also be used in some sweet applications

23 - burrata
Country of origin - Italy (again)

Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from cow's milk. It's a specialty of the Puglia region of southern Italy. The name "burrata" means "buttery" because of its rich, creamy texture and light salinity

Mmmm…butter

22 - Gorgonzola
Country of Origin - Italy (oh come on)

Gorgonzola is a blue cheese made from unskimmed cow's milk and named after the town of Gorgonzola in the Lombardy region of Italy. It's known for its creamy texture and sharp, tangy flavor

Another stinky entry, i usually relegate this one to salads or maybe a sauce

always need some type of blue on a cheese/charcuterie platter.

I agree. That way, everyone else eats that, and I get all the Parmigiana/Gouda/Manchego.

21 - Butterkäse
County of Origin - Germany

Butterkäse, which translates to "buttery cheese", is a semi-soft, creamy cow's milk cheese with a mild, buttery flavor and a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture. It's similar to gouda or muenster cheese and has a fat content of around 50%. Butterkäse is aged for only a month, which gives it its delicate flavors

Might be the most underrated cheese in this countdown, but I struggled to rate it any higher. Good cheese to eat by itself or on a sandwich

Flaming hot cheetos are the kings of the cheeto world! Love those things even if my fingertips stay red for days afterward.

That's a new one for me and one I'll be checking out soon.

I’m not familiar with it either

I think they are now extinct, but I used to like Cheese Tidbits. Oblong versions of a cheese it.

Yes, they also had them in doo-dads snack mix

Hi Dan - Great thread
I expect to see @Drunken knight in here

Of all the folks who post on food and what not in here, that guy gets it
I haven't read past the first few posts but this should be a fun read

I love threads that bring people of like mind together
I hope we get some wine pairings in here

I love a good spread of fancy cheeses and great wines...and the wine need not be expensive as long as its good

I don't eat much of this one but I do like it with my meatballs on a pizza pie every so often

44 - cottage cheese
Country of origin - 🤷‍♂️

Cottage cheese is a fresh cheese made from curdled milk, cream, and salt. It's high in protein and calcium, and contains B vitamins and minerals like selenium and phosphorus. Cottage cheese is also low in calories and carbohydrates, and contains slow-digesting protein that can help build muscle and control blood sugar

Occasionally I’ll crush a cup of this stuff or get it at a salad bar or something. I’m sure @Frostillicus wife probably makes some abomination of a dessert with this and strawberry jello and pineapple…you betcha
"Good Culture"
I don't really like cottage cheese but Mrs buys this brand and I find myself eating it and enjoying it sometimes

26 - Gruyère
Country of Origin - Switzerland

Gruyère is a hard Swiss cheese that originated in the cantons of Fribourg, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, and Berne in Switzerland. It's named after the town of Gruyères in Fribourg.

Gruyère is made from raw cow's milk and animal rennet. The cheese is slowly matured in cellars, where each wheel is turned, lightly brined, and brushed.

Gruyère is a firm cheese with a pale yellow color and a rich, creamy, slightly nutty taste

I like to add a little to my Mac and cheese, good overall cheese though

With that we close out the top 25, only the best and most respected cheeses remain
This is the first Mt Rushmore nominee IMHO
4 on Mt Rushmore, you get the picture here

I hope cheddar makes an appearance, there are many varieties and I love the taste
Prefer white and hard to push a knife thru it, harder vs softer

Oh yeah that’s a good combo, not too many places have it available (at least not in my regular rotation)

we had a little run on italian. will #20 try to grab one, or go vbd?
#20 may sound a little Italian but it is not. I expect much outrage with the next group (probably tomorrow at this)

Haven't seen a lot of soft-ripened cheeses appear yet.

Patience.

I've made my own ricotta a few times. It was delicious, but not better enough than the good store bought stuff to justify the annoyance of making it.

Same with paneer

Don't forget the jalapeno cheddar Cheetos

20 - Velveeta
Country of Origin - USA 🇺🇸

Velveeta is a processed cheese product that is similar to American cheese. It was invented in 1918 by Emil Frey and is made from a mixture of old cheeses, emulsifiers, and other ingredients. The FDA doesn't consider Velveeta to be real cheese because of its ingredients and preparation.

Ok hear me out. Despite what that says above, it’s cheese enough for me. Any decent mac and cheese is gonna have a little bit of velveeta in it (search your feelings, you know it to be true). I also use this in the cheesy potatoes I make every Christmas

Can make a cheese sauce in a pinch or throw it on a burger for extra melty goodness

19 - Colby
Country of Origin - USA 🇺🇸

Colby is a semihard orange cheese made from cow's milk. It is named after the city of Colby, Wisconsin, USA, where it was first developed in 1885 and quickly became popular. Colby is manufactured in a similar process to [redacted] cheese

this one also goes in the cheesey potatoes, along with [redacted]. Growing up there was a party store that had a pretty good turkey and Colby sub too. In hindsight I might be overrating this one a bit, as I think there are other cheeses that do what it does better

18 - cream cheese
Country of Origin - USA 🇺🇸

Cream cheese is a soft, unripened cheese made from milk and cream. It's similar to cottage cheese, but has a higher fat content. Cream cheese is high in fat and calories, but also contains calcium, vitamin A, and protein

Cream cheese is used in both savory cooking and desserts. It's spreadable and has a creamy taste. Its subtle sweetness, mild tanginess, and silky smooth texture make it extremely versatile

This should be the last controversial entry, but try to imagine a world without it. How terrible would eating a bagel be? What would all those suburban moms feed their family if they couldn’t make “crack chicken” or whatever slop they dump in a crockpot

Im not sure there’s another cheese with the sweet and savory versatility than good old American cream cheese. As you can see the USA is starting to assert its dominance in the cheese rankings

17 - Stilton
Country of origin - England

Stilton is a crumbly, buttery English cheese with a strong smell and taste. It has a complex flavor that starts with creamy and nutty notes and ends with a salty finish. Stilton is made from cow's milk and has blue veins. It's often used as a dessert cheese or a topping for crackers

The king of the blue cheeses imo.

16 - Colby-jack
Country of origin- USA 🇺🇸

Colby-Jack is a semi-hard American cheese made from Colby and Monterey Jack. It's a marbled orange and white cheese that's mild and creamy. It's made in Wisconsin and is also known as Cojack

Technically a hybrid cheese, but I think its inclusion is warranted. It’s a great snacking cheese in stick, cube or slice form and can be shredded to give you some variety without having to open 2 different cheeses

Flame away if you must

I must. Monterey Jack is barely cheese. And Colby kinda sucks

Note the word “similar”. That means American is yet to come.

I used to hate this stuff, but now I love it. My wife puts it in white chicken chili and creamy sweet potato soup with coconut milk.

You must have had some terrible Monterey Jack. A good Jack is a top 5 cheese for me easily.
