***Official - Dan Lambskins Top 50 Cheeses*** (1 Viewer)

American cheese definitely has its place
This
At the very least I like it on a grilled burger, much better than a cheese-less burger. Pro grilling tip: before placing on burger take the plastic off the cheese.

My thing with American cheese is that there is no instance where it wouldn't be better if you substituted American for a Cheddar or Jack, burgers included.

Give me a burger with a slice of Tillamook over American any day.

I've never seen a food product that is so mediocre be so beloved.
Bobby Flay makes a pretty ok burger. He’s said his favorite cheese for a burger is American. I agree

Reagan Cheese is a part of 80s culture like Cabbage Patch Kids and crack cocaine.

Give me Garbage Pail Kids, heroin, and Cheddar any day!

Excited about thread. So far, thread does not deliver. My hopes remain high.
I need to find another 15-20 cheeses and then compile the rankings

Morning looks pretty quiet so I think I can get a few released tomorrow. If not we’re looking at Monday
Pretty sure anyone with only 30 cheeses in their rotation isn't a cheese expurt
Look at Mayor McCheese over here

Didn't his burger chain go out of business?

I do agree that they were pretty good, but still...feels like he should lose some credibility for that.

Cheese is difficult to rank. My top 5-10 would probably all be equally ranked, but all depending on their use. What's the criteria here? Are you valuing a cheese that has multiple uses more or less than a cheese that has one use but is amazing at that one use?

50 - Paneer
County of origin- India

Paneer is a fresh, soft, non-aging, and non-melting cheese that is a staple ingredient in Indian cuisine. It's made from full-fat cow or buffalo milk by curdling the milk with an acid derived from a fruit or vegetable, such as lemon juice

we get Indian food occasionally. Sometimes it has paneer in it. Not the greatest cheese by itself, but it holds up well in flavorful sauces

49 - Chevre
County of Origin- France (I think)

Goat cheese is a cheese made from goat's milk. It has been made for thousands of years and is known for its tangy, rich flavor. Goat cheese is lower in fat, cholesterol, and calories, and higher in calcium than similar cheeses made from cow's milk

Not a great cheese by itself, but it lends itself to mixing well with herbs and fruit and whatever.

48 - Easy Cheese
Country of Origin - USA

Easy Cheese is the trademark for a processed cheese spread product distributed by Mondelēz International. It is also commonly referred to by generic terms such as "spray cheese", "squirt cheese", "cheese in a can", and/or "cheese cans

That’s right cheese snobs, it’s that kind of list. A can of spray cheese and some ritz crackers was quite a treat growing up. While my easy cheese consumption has dropped considerably over the years, it still holds a special place in my heart

Not cheese.

Is Cheez Whiz real cheese?

The short answer to this is NO. As a matter of fact, the FDA recognises Cheez Whiz as a processed cheese product. The reason for this is because of the large number of non-dairy ingredients that are present in this commercial product.

Easy cheese, not cheez whiz

And it’s more a cheese than some of the stuff you tried to pass off as horror

Fine.

Scorecard: Easy Cheese is NOT real cheese

So, is Mondelēz’s Easy Cheese real cheese or not? The verdict is quite clear. Because it fails Criteria 2, 3 and 4 of our Cheese Definition Test, Easy Cheese is most definitely not real cheese. As a matter of fact, the FDA classifies this product as a processed cheese spread.

47 - Asadero
Country of origin- Mexico

Asadero cheese (queso asadero meaning "roastable" or "for grilling," also spelled "azadero") is a white, flat Mexican cheese that is made fresh from goat and cow's milk.

Not much to say on this one, it was actually a late substitution for another cheese that I mistook for a different cheese

I think it sometimes ends up in Mexican cheese blends

46 - Edam
Country of Origin - the Netherlands

Edam is a semi-hard cheese that originated in the Netherlands, and is named after the town of Edam in the province of North Holland. Edam is traditionally sold in flat-ended spheres with a pale yellow interior and a coat, or rind, of red paraffin wax. Wikipedia

a rather unremarkable cheese, its inclusion in a cheese plate is unlikely to warrant any excitement, but also unlikely to have any complaints

Cheez Whiz for the win

With all the amazing cheeses of the world, if this and American crack any top 50, it'd be like if Killer Sofa made the top 50 horror list. Just no. I'm already prepared to be disappointed.

I've seen online popularity survey rankings with "nacho cheese" at #1.

Nacho cheese is a cheese sauce made from cheese. Not sure if that qualifies. But I guess if we're counting processed, canned canola oil made to look sort of cheese-like why not?

A good, properly made queso is delicious.

Just had a Edam Wagyu cheeseburger last weekend. Pretty good, but Edam wouldn't crack my top 10.

How about top 50?

No qualms with easy cheese on the list. it has unique texture that has it's time and place.

and go ahead funny guy. Go ahead and add "yeah, and that place is in the garbage can." I'm sure this would amuse you and your joy boys.

Depends how many cheddar variations are allowed, but I like Edam on a charcuterie board, so probably top 50. It's a safe cheese.

Putting the GOAT at #49 is certainly a choice

🐐

I can't eat goat cheese without gagging. Same with my mom and grandmother. It's like some sort of extreme hereditary dislike.

45 - mascarpone
Country of origin - italy

Mascarpone is a soft, Italian cream cheese. It's made from heavy cream, which gives it a high fat content and a richer, creamier texture than cream cheese. Mascarpone is often used in desserts, pastries, and cakes as a thick, silky-smooth alternative to cream. It's also a key ingredient in tiramisu, where its buttery flavor balances the bitterness of coffee

Let’s face it, this cheese is good for one thing and that’s tiramisu, but it is such a titan in the dessert world that it deserves a spot here (Desserts maybe a future top 50 thread). I’m sure I’ve used it elsewhere on occasion.

I used to watch a lot of cooking shows, I can still picture Giada mouthing out mas-car-pone-ay 🤌

Don't dis the mighty cannoli, possibly the greatest hand held dessert ever.

44 - cottage cheese
Country of origin - 🤷‍♂️

Cottage cheese is a fresh cheese made from curdled milk, cream, and salt. It's high in protein and calcium, and contains B vitamins and minerals like selenium and phosphorus. Cottage cheese is also low in calories and carbohydrates, and contains slow-digesting protein that can help build muscle and control blood sugar

Occasionally I’ll crush a cup of this stuff or get it at a salad bar or something. I’m sure @Frostillicus wife probably makes some abomination of a dessert with this and strawberry jello and pineapple…you betcha

Good dessert. Too crumbly at times. Not sure that’s enough to bump it any higher though

In the 70's/80's mom would eat this with those canned peaches with all that high fructose corn syrup while watching Jack LaLanne do exercises with the vacuum cleaner. Tried the peaches, cottage cheese thing once...once:sick:

43 - jarlsberg
Country of origin- Norway (not Switzerland)

Jarlsberg is a mild, semi-soft cheese made from cow's milk. It's known for its large, round holes and sweet, nutty taste. Jarlsberg is a Swiss-style cheese that's a cross between Gouda and Emmental. It's made with a patented propionic acid that gives the cheese its flavor and holes

I’ve only seen this in some sort of jarlsberg dip at Kroger. It’s pretty tasty. I’m sure someone is going to chime in with a jarlsberg truffle burger they had at the local hipster brewpub

42 - cheez-whiz
Country of origin - USA 🇺🇸

Cheez Whiz is a processed cheese sauce or spread made by Kraft Foods. It was first sold in 1952 and is still in production today. Cheez Whiz is a creamy cheese dip made with real cheese and has a mild cheddar taste. It can be used as a topping for steak sandwiches, burgers, French fries, and nachos

It’s cheese enough for me. It has its uses, like being a subpar option for cheesesteaks. Might be what they use on chili cheese fries at some places
