Wilfork's poke in the eye of Jacobs (1 Viewer)

So, was this as innocent as Gumble seemed to think, or should the NFL come down hard on him for sticking his fingers inside of Jacob's facemask?

Was supposed to be a poll, but I messed it up somehow. Anyway, is a fine enough, or should he get a suspension, and if he gets a suspension, should it be delayed till next regular season or start right away?

It was very far from innocent. But I don't think he was trying to gouge out Jacob's eye. He seemed to be using the jab a lot like grabbing the facemesk. He was getting his hands, or what part of him he could into BJ's face and dhaking his head with it. Still a personal foul, still possibly a fine. But I don't think he was trying to actually damage Jacob's eye. Maybe he was at first, I dunno, but all the "diggin" by Wolfork it was clear that his finger wasn't going all the way in. Still dirty, still possible to injure him, but I don't think it was a deliberate attempt to injure.

I think it was an attempt to permanently injure Jacobs, so we'll call it 1-1.It's the Patriots, so Wilfork won't miss any games, but hopefully they'll at least give him a courtesy fine of $10K

Wilfork wasn't trying to poke Jacobs' eye out. He WAS intentionally trying to make contact with Jacobs' face. It's a sign of disrespect, kind of like spitting in someone's face without the spit.

I think a suspension is warranted, and if this was week 2 of the regular season he might get one.

The week before the playoffs start though, he'll just get a fine because the commish won't want to affect the playoffs by removing a key player from a high profile team like the Pats.

It should be a suspension, but it won't be. Goodell doesn't have the balls. Wilfork got away with just a fine for the Losman hit as well.

:hophead: A fine is warranted, and is almost certainly coming.

I don't think he was trying to poke his eye because he could have. But he started out with his finger pointing between his eyes, and after a moment moved it over to point right at his eye. At that point he intentionally put the guy's vision in jeopardy. All it would have taken is a player bumping into either guy from behind. It was completely unwarranted, obviously dangerous to another player, and had nothing to do with playing the game of football. Those are elements where a suspension becomes a realistic possibility.

Hey, mom, maybe the commish should send him to bed without dinner.

Thanks for keeping it excellent.

I think it's pretty absurd to think that Wilfork was trying to permanently injure Jacobs. Having said that, you can't stick your finger in another man's eye, accidentally or negligently or otherwise. He should get a fine.

I say it doesn't matter if it was intentional or not.

You commit armed robbery and accidentally shoot somebody, the court doesn't care if you did it on purpose or not.

If he stuck his finger in the dude's face and something happened, he would be in a LOT of trouble right now.

But he should still be treated as if he intended to injure him, solely because he could have.

Should be suspended at least a game. Anyone remember when that ref hit the brown's players eye and his career was done after that. The eye is important and he straight up poked him in it.

Very surprising that you couldn't figure out how to start a poll on a message board,

it warrants a thread because it was the only game on? please just stop it. yes, i am a pats fan.
I'm not surprised at all this got a thread...because it was probably one of the most-watched NFL games of the season AND the NFL Network crew spent quite a bit of time covering it (not to mention 4-5 replays of the incident). We're happy for ya that your a Pats fan and all...but if Wilfork was a member of the Vikings, Browns, Dolphins or 28 other NFL teams, I would have expected the EXACT same response on these boards.

Cheap move but I don't think he was trying to break the eye, as mad sweeney said, it was more of a move to show his "disrespect" (which is a whole other issue altogether).

Lets not try and compare this to Albert Haynesworth stomping on some guys head.

I'm not surprised it's a thread at all, but i do think it's silly and rediculous that people need to start a new thread about every stupid little thing that happens with the patriots. This would definately not be a thread if it was a player from another team. It would simply be taunting and he would get a fine that no one would care about.

I was not aware the eye had bones

Some humerous responses in here. Lots of whining, but anything to tear on the Patriots, right?

Wilfork is most definitely a dirty player, but you gentlemen do realize this sort of thing happens all the time in football, I hope.

I remember back when Bubba Baker (I think) was playing for the Vikings and did the same thing to a player (dating myself I know - Baker only played with the Vikes one year) but not sure if there is a precedent or if he was suspended or not. I do think he got caught and was tossed out of the game, which should have been done here but wasn't.

I agree. Jacobs has a big mouth & Wilfork was just trying to punk him

A lifetime ban is the only thing in order here.

We don't know what was said, what was done earlier in the game or anytihing. All we saw was the poking. Should he do it? No. He went about 3" too far with his finger and penetrated the facemask. Should he have received a PF at the time? probably, if it was seen. Should he receive a fine? Absolutely. Probably in the $10 to $15k range, because of other incidents. If it was a first infraction, it would most definitely be $5.

What I can't believe is that after such a great game, proably the best Ellie has ever played, and a great all arond game with the single pick as really the only bad play, people choose to make this an issue. Sure, it happened, and I don't think anybody believes there shouldn't be a fine. But, that was a great football game, well worth the simulcast.

While there have been too many Patriots threads, this type of "was the players action intentionally attempting to injure?" threads has been pretty common. These came to mind immediately, probably others from this season alone. Timmons

Yes and putting a finger in someone's face when you are smack talking with them is so much like stomping a cleat into the side of a guys head too!
