Will Limas Sweed ever be a good WR? (1 Viewer)

I also wouldn't rule out the Steelers bringing in a low-cost vet WR to compete for WR3 (assuming Nate leaves).
:goodposting: I fully expect the Steelers to sign a vet WR to compete with Sweed for WR3 if Nate leaves.
There isn't much out there after Housh and they certainly won't sign him. I don't see anyone else out there who is much of a threat to steal too many looks.
Just saw Marty Booker was cut today, Jerry Porter yesterday and Mike Furrey last week. I'm sure there will be at least 5-10 similar vets that will be available at minimum cost. Those are solid WR3 competition for Sweed if Nate departs.
And you see these guys as threats?Booker got cut from the Bears. What did he do last year?Porter got cut by the Jags. What has he done ever? He had one year a long time ago when he came close to 1000 yards. He has never been that good.Booker will be lucky to sign with any team at all. Porter will for vet minimum but he isn't that young or that good.Furrey is 31. He had one good, but not great year in 2006. He will sign somewhere and he will compete and have a chance to be a starter but I doubt anyone is going to hand him a starting job.
Its worse than that. Booker is pretty much done. I would say Furrey has close to a zero chance of being a starter. And Porter may be such a locker room poison that no one will sign him until in-season when hit by injuries.
I think Frenchy just threw out some names of the WRs who were most recently cut... not that the Steelers would necessarily be targeting those guys specifically. But if the Steelers lose Nate, they only have 2 WR who saw a lot of time in Ward and Holmes, they also have Sweed, Dallas Baker who was on the practice squad at the end of the year, and someone named Brandon Williams who was out of football last year... so the Steelers can't feel good about their depth at WR even if they think Sweed will win the WR3 job... they'll have to add someone just due to the numbers/experience ;)

Plenty more. Reggie Williams is one I would like to see as my team's #3.

Five things I'd rather see Pittsburgh invest in than their WR3 slot, b/c I think Sweed is just fine:

1. O-line

2. Strategies to make Heath Miller more of a H-back than TE

3. Mo-Mo flexed into the offense as a slot receiver

4. O-line

5. FWP run the Wildcat... just once in a while

Okay, four -- but still!

Hail the Mighty Steelers!

No offense, but Reggie Williams? The guy is a bust. Ok, if you could him for peanuts he would be ok to have as deep depth, but he isn't getting any better. Sweed? Who knows. Still too early to tell. I maintain my position that aside from Housh there is really no FA out there who pose a threat to make any noise anywhere. Rookies? Could be. But in Pittsburgh's case I doubt that they will draft a WR in first or second round.

Not saying Williams has more or less potential than Sweed, but as of right now, I think Williams makes a much better #3 than Sweed.

I was never a huge fan when he was entering the league. At the same time, I wouldn't totally dismiss him based on his rookie growing pains. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Burress yet. Plax was HORRIBLE as a rookie. Just as pitiful as Sweed. He looked lost and had a bad case of the dropsies. I generally ascribe to the "what you see is what you get" philosophy when it comes to young players, but I do think you have to be patient with WRs. For whatever reason, it often takes them a year or two to get off the ground and get comfortable with the pro game.

Sweed isn't a guy that I'm going out of my way to acquire, but I'd consider him in the late rounds. He has a good pedigree and I trust Pittsburgh's scouting department to identify quality players. Moreover, the fact that he had some key drops obscured the fact that he was actually getting open. He's a good athlete and he's in a situation where he could be starting 2-3 years down the road with an able QB throwing him the ball.

No way the Steelers burn a #1 or #2 on a WR and doubtful a #3 unless he can return kicks. The Steelers have pressing issues at OL and depth issues at DE and CB.Edited to add: they'll likely get anothe #3 as a compensatory pick so maybe they will draft a WR/KR with one of their 3s.

Excellent response about Burress as a rookie. It was definitely something I was thinking as I was just scanning this thread. I also like AZ_Prof's mention of his performance overall and the fact he did come back from that bad drop and play better when Ward was out. That's the mark of a guy who didn't get consumed by his mistake and believes in himself. What I like about Sweed is he made some really clutch catches early in his Texas career. The things he needs to learn are for the most part something coaches can teach him. His routes aren't too great - and they may never be - but his athleticism and hands technique are good. I think he is still a player I find promising.

Limas Sweed - WR

The Bengals worked out free agent WR Limas Sweed on Friday.

The 53rd pick in the 2008 draft, Sweed flamed out quickly with the Steelers after a poor rookie season and torn Achilles'. He was out of football in 2011. If Sweed is back to 100 percent, he's worth one last shot at age 27.

I hope he gets a shot somewhere...
