Willie's Band Names Postmortem (1 Viewer)

I only became aware of Willie through the since deleted Help me name my Band thread and the subsequent ban the following members thread. I entered into the original thread to see if I could submit some good ideas based on Willie's description of his bands' sound and influences. I thought that I did just that and as I stated in the "ban" thread, one of my posts got a like from Willie. I felt pretty good about that.

There were joke names posted from the start of the thread, as there are in most threads in the FFA forum. I found them to be stupid,  funny, and creative in the best tradition of witty, wise cracking, sardonic humor. It was evident that everyone involved in the thread had something to offer. Willie supplied us with a fake picture of his band and joked that he was the singer with the cheesy looking golden jacket.  The band names flowed and everyone was enjoying themselves, or so I thought.

As I said, I knew nothing about Pre Band Name Willie or his history on these boards. Some of the more active members in the original, now deleted, band name thread  seemed to know Willie based on the manner in which they communicated with him and the comments about some of Willie's posting history.  Some of those more active posters believed that when Willie began to express his displeasure about the joke band names, that he was "on a fishing trip" and not actually upset. They compared his demeanor in the original band name thread to other past threads and seemed to have some insight into Willie that I didn't have.

After the original thread was deleted, and Willie announced his departure from the boards, I was extremely surprised. It was at this point that I believed that Willie was truly upset with how the thread evolved. I read every post in that thread and could did not understand why someone would become upset over it. A large percentage of the posts were joke band names and a small percentage of the posts were directed at Willie's choice for his band's name. Of the posts that focused on Willie's choice, some were filled with hyperbole, consternation, and discord on both sides.

The Remembrance thread began with posters who were in disbelief  over the deletion of the original thread and the perception that Willie's actions were unwarranted. The vast majority of posters who also frequented the original thread seemed to be stunned by the outcome and wondered why it had been deleted. Things quickly returned to business as usual and the Remembrance thread began to emerge as a force in the field of bad jokes, puns, quips, jests, zingers, and japes. Until, of course, Willie entered the thread.

That is when old grudges, unsubstantiated accusations of the use of alias profiles, and threats of banning invaded the landscape. Willie posted that I was the alias of three different members with whom he apparently has had a bad history. One of the three that he named took umbrage to the claim and the Remembrance thread morphed into a battleground over the use or non use of an alias. Thankfully that unnecessary invective has moved to Willie's ban thread.

In no way am I admitting any wrong doing or apologizing for my contributions to any of the Willie Band Name Threads. Nor do I feel that the band name posts from other members were mean spirited or ban worthy. I enjoy creating bad puns, and song parodies. I enjoy reading bad puns. That's all it was for me. It was a fun outlet. I took information from other posts in the thread and used it as inspiration, but I honestly can't comprehend how anyone would have such a negative reaction or develop the belief that any of it was a personal attack. Perhaps the posts were seen through an accusatory lens where perceived enemies are disguised as brilliant satirists. I guess there's no point in speculating.

What I do know is that I harbor no ill will towards Willie. I don't know what's going on in his life and am in no position to judge. I simply want to enjoy the FFA, read some bad jokes, post some really bad jokes, and generally have fun. I fully intend to continue to follow whatever threads pique my interest and to participate in those that speak to me. I may even post a band name or two, but they are not meant to injure or insult, they are just designed to bring a chuckle or two.

Hey now , right up my alley. Squish is into early 90s musac
My first concert was the Beatles in 1964 at JFK Stadium at the age of 4. My next was The Stooges in 1973, that was it for me. Unless you count The Banana Splits who performed at a Phillies game at Connie Mack Stadium in 1968.

The whole "Band" thing makes more sense if you pretend Willie is Andy Kauffman and the thread deletions are Jerry Lawler.

Does squistion also share my affinity towards 70's & 80's punk music?
Um, it depends how you define punk. I liked Television, Devo, Green Day of that era, but they weren't talked about as punk in the same breath as The Clash or The Ramones. My sensibilities lean a little more towards a pop sound.

I'm not a punk snob. I appreciate all variations of the genre.

The Jam is still my favorite band, loved the rawness of the first album, but also loved the band that they became.

You're an old fart, aren't you

That's very kind of you to say, it hasn't been easy for Willie being off the road this long.

Cybergeek>Don't care if you're an alias or not, but you're not funny or entertaining.  Please post less.  TIA.

Willie thought cybergeek = squistion? Willie does have a sharp eye , maybe
Columbo also said that I am @Tone1loc and his proof was that we both are liberals and play dynasty.

However, I never did figure out why he thought I was cybergeek.

How does Green Day ever get in a conversation with Television

All Mod Cons & Setting Soms were in a different class of the "uk punk scene". Tremendous song writing by Weller at such a young age

They probably shouldn't since they became a commercial success unlike Tom Verlaine and company. Not that Television didn't do some great stuff like Little Johnny Jewel, Venus and Marquee Moon, but I digress...

Anyway, they were both lumped under the generic "alternative/punk" label by many fans and critics of that era, as were many bands (i.e. Blondie, Devo) that are not considered punk in retrospect by today's standards.

:nerd:

Mainly meant as a knock on Green Day and it's "punk era". Television was a punk band that didn't play punk music.

Blondie was new wave , different than what new wave become known as early 80s mish mash. Blondie was part on "the new wave" of music in the 70s . Devo was the same but they morphed into the caricature 80s new wave. There also was post-punk which Devo also had a foot in but not Blondie

Weller's is one of the greatest songwriters ever and I've only known a handful of people that know who he is. The growth of the Jam's sound after the first two albums was reminiscent of the Beatles leap from Help! to Rubber Soul.

See, what you're not getting is the timing of how everything went down in the original thread.  I asked for suggestions for names.  I asked for serious help, i think my exact request was take your comedian hats off and put your artist hats on, or something like that. Some people are going to joke around no matter what you say (and it's always the least funny people but that's for another thread) but i had hoped that a good number would really try. A handful did but most did not. I said screw it (I was pressed for time) and just picked a name.  That's when the thread turned from annoying to vicious.  It got really nasty.  I was genuinely hurt by some of the things said at that point. Not the lame band puns but the cruel, personal assaults on my judgement and character. Some were said via pm. It went on for a few days before it died down but I was truly stunned by that point. I had never seen anything like that happen in the community. Phase 3 of the thread, the final phase, was the never ending old person band names. That's when you showed up (I think). The damage had been done by that point but each time the thread returned to page one, with each repetitive, unfunny band name it felt like people throwing little pebbles at my ravaged, bleeding body from the overpass above as I lay crippled on the highway. They couldn't let it go, they couldn't just let me die. That was about the time I left the forum, broken. And all of this happened because I dare ask for some help and advice regarding something I cared deeply about.

So to you, the never ending band names were just you having some harmless fun, just goofing around and posting some puns that gave you a chuckle. To me they were a never ending reminder of being personally destroyed by a community I had spent almost 7 years as a part of. Have a great weekend.

And I thought Eminence was a drama queen.

You are all the same people and you're just f'ing with me, right?
