Willis McGahee (1 Viewer)

I haven't seen any news lately on his status. I know he had knee surgery (scope) about 2 weeks ago and the only thing I've heard is the quote from him saying he'll be ready. But, has the coaching staff said anything? Maybe the Baltimore homers can chime in. I am thinking about pulling the trigger for a trade with the Ray Rice owner in my league. I would probably have to give him Kevin Smith.

Smith is the starting RB with no competition. Rice may not see the field this year and may not see the field next year. Yes, Rice could be a superstar, but you don't know what you are getting with him. You know what you are getting with Smith. I wouldn't do the trade and I own both players.

As a McGahee and Rice owner I hope they don't rush him back too fast. Just a few weeks after knee surgery seems pretty risky to me.

Does anyone know has there been similar procedures done to RBs where they have returned in only a few weeks?

IIRC, didn't McGahee return well ahead of schedule from that devastaing knee injury in that bowl game? I think he is a quick healer

No, he didn't return well ahead of schedule. He was out for the entire year. There were rumors that he was going to be back and play by the end of the season, but he never did. He did have a pretty good year the next year though.

I think reports of McGahee's demise are well premature.
Could not agree more.Every pre-season it is the same song and dance for some big name RB's. You hear about them losing their jobs, spliting carries yada yada yada because the teams drafted a rookie RB.This year we have FWP, McGahee, Edge and to a much lesser extent LJ being talked about as close to done as primary RB's.McGahee is that teams workhorse until proven otherwise. Ray Rice is a very good prospect but McGahee is coming off his best season as a pro and going into the prime of his career. FWP is also undervalued. He will also be the teams go to back. LJ....yeah his team looks scary bad but he will get his, I don't see either Kolby Smith or Jamal Charles taking too much away at all. Edge is a solid pro that is not in danger of losing his starting gig. Hightower has a long way to go to unseat a pro's pro like E.James.Once the real games start the veterans play....and as long as they perform the rookies (unless your names are McFadden, Smith, Forte, Johnson and Stewart) are going to sit for the most part.

are there any recent statements from a coach or doctor on mcgahee's status?

not a mcgahee owner. I do own Rice, but he is strictly for my fatasy bench right now.

But if i had McGahee I would be very worried about the first week.

Doesn't anyone find it a little suspicious that there isnt more being revealed about his status.

I do.

McGahee owner here and I don't expect him to play week 1. Word is that he is doing some running in a pool. This close to the season I think it would be a mistake to rush back for week 1. Take a little extra time ( a week or 2) and come back healthy. You're not going to lose your job!

"I've made a lot of progress," McGahee said. "That's the goal, opening day."

McGahee is still not cleared for running or practice, though.

"When the trainer feels I can run and do all that, then I will," he said "I don't want to aggravate it. I kind of thought it would be this way.

"With a knee injury, you don't want to rush back too quick. When I had surgery, I asked the doctors if I could be ready for opening day and they said it depends on how hard you work. That's all I've been doing"

We're what, 12 days from the 1st game and he hasn't even started running yet? That to me is troublesome, especially considering he plays the most punishing position in the game. Even if he does play, I can't imagine him carrying the full load week 1. Don't see how it's possible. And this is nothing like Portis last year for everyone who keeps comparing the two, as he simply had some standard knee tendinitis and didn't have any surgery. Also, Portis didn't have to learn a new offense, which reportedly McGahee is struggling to pick up.

Earlier this summer I was pretty bullish on McGahee mainly due to Cam Cameron, but due to his injury, and the reports that he hasn't learned the offense yet, I'm not considering him before round 3.

I thought his injury was borderline career threatening. Not as bad as Robert Edwards bad, but he ripped up his knee really good. I didn't think he made it back to play when they said he would (which was crazy talk at the time) but I thought he came back quicker than expected - by doctors.

I agree that he won't play week 1, but when McGahee's back, he'll put up big numbers. Redraft or Dynasty, he shouldn't drop past round 2, so you won't even get the option in round 3

Unless you are giving up Silent Bob, I don't make the trade. The McGahee situation sounds bad, but I think Smith outperforms Rice even if Rice plays all 16. Personally, I am not drafting McGahee.

are you serious?? Rice plays on a much (imo) better team and is a WAY better running back then Kevin Smith. This is not really debatable. If he was a lock to play 16 or be the starter, like Smith is this year, then this whole board would probably agree with me.

The Ravens? Their OL is nowhere near what it was. Their QB situation is a mess. Any RB is going to face 8 in a box. The Ravens are not going to win 6 games with that schedule.

I got him at 3.06 last night in a 0.5 ppr redraft. Got Ray Rice at 9.06.

the point of my post wasnt what team is better. I was trying to emphasize that if Rice was in the same situation as Smith, then I would take Rice hands down, by a mile. He is 2x the talent Smith is. I dont watch much of college, but when these guys hit the pros, i try to watch a lot of old game tape and such. these two dudes are in different leagues.

Don't judge Smith by where he went to college. The dude is good.

No, it's nearly identical. I mean, you could literally pull the name "Willis Mcgahee" out of these "there's no way he'll carry the load week 1 when he's not even practicing a week before the season, it's not possible" quotes and replace it with "Clinton Portis" from last year. The major difference is that this happened to Portis the year after he had split time and had a back who performed better than him the year before along side him, while Mcgahee just has a 2nd round rookie to compete with. If anything, Portis' situation was worse because he was backed up by a guy who many felt could do the job as well or better than he could, and he had actually shown some of it on the field.

Cameron is why I'm big on McGahee also. Ronnie Brown was having a superstar year in Cameron's offense last season before he went down. I don't think Brown became a superstar all of a sudden last year. Cameron feeds his starting RB in both the running & passing game. I over paid for McGahee before the injury issues & have been under paying for him since. In my last auction, I got run up on Rice for way more than I wanted to pay, but figured since it was a dynasty that I should be ok. That said, Rice isn't a very big guy & I'm not sure he would fall into a workhorse back situation. Before the injury I had McGahee as the #6 RB on my board & thought his upside may be higher. The injury does have me worried but neither McGahee or the coaches sound too concerned. Teams will rise or fall with McGahee this season, at where he is going now, if healthy, he's a difference maker.

McGahee is no Clinton Portis at any level. Talent, maturity or otherwise comparing the injury may on the surface suffice to calm dynasty and early re-draft pickers but the facts are what they are: MCG is a talented but lazy SOB. Rice will give the Ravens "Raven Style play" tenacious, hardworking and dogged production. I would not give up Smith for Rice this year unless your a huge gambler(I am). But I would trade Smith and Forte for Rice in a dynasty league without a second thought. I own all of the above mentioned in one league or another and I will not part with Rice for any less than a TOP five RB.

When you put it that way, I guess I didn't over pay for Rice in my Dynasty auction.

I would take Rice for Smith in a heartbeat. Talent wise it's not even close. Smith goes down too easy, he doesn't have that low center of gravity that RBs need, with those long legs and long strides. Rice is built short with tree trunk legs, plus Cameron will make him a stud. When a player has an injury like McGahee's it really shortens his career, and a second injury means he's probably building up scar tissue due to bone on bone contact. Of course I'm no doctor, but I did tear my ACL a few years ago, and I do know a lot about knees.

I got McGahee at 3.1 in a 12 teamer and 4.8 in a 10 teamer. :pickle:

No, it's not nearly identical. McGahee has taken zero reps in this offense and has openly admitted he's having problems with the new playbook. He also reportedly showed up to camp out of shape. Portis was much more familiar with his coaching staff, has (IMO) a much higher football IQ, and (IIRC) kept himself in shape while he was injured. There's a bunch of similar discussion in this thread, along with the quotes from Willis.

Look, I'm not a McGahee hater at all - I'm a Ravens fan. There's no doubt in my mind that, if Willis is ready to go (both mentally & physically), he gives the Ravens the best RB option at this time. As good as Rice has been in TC & preseason, he's still got a lot to learn. I just don't have a good feeling about a guy who hasn't played, can't run, & appears to have problems learning Cameron's offense.

Most definitely. And the Ravens are playing the Bengals :goodposting: . FWIW, I'm starting him as my 3rd flex over Burleson, Ginn, and Chestor the molestor in a standard scoring league.

The question I have is if he blows up against the Bengals, which is very possible if not probable, can you get a good enough player from the McGahee owner to make a trade worthwhile.

hell yes. i think i might start him over thomas jones and lendale

If Rice blows up against Cinci (good odds) and the fact that the early-season run defense schedule doesn't strike fear into the hearts of most fantasy owners I would think, maybe McGahee backs up Rice for the rest of the season?

Let's not get 4 laps ahead of ourselves. Rice has to start an NFL game first, before you can predict the total demise of McGahee as a fantasy player. Harbaugh has been pretty clear that they want to use McGahee for all he is worth.

:lmao: I totally agree with you. I'm just wondering what happens should Rice get off to a superb start. Then maybe McGahee comes back and gets his first start and struggles...?
