Wimbush and Toefield (1 Viewer)

I picked up M. Jones Drew, thinking he would emerge as the Jags #2 RB behind Taylor. With Freddy's injury history, this seems to be a valuable spot

Anyone shed some light on this? Should I drop Drew and p/u Wimbush (Toefield is gone)?

The News

LaBrandon Toefield and Derrick Wimbush are the leading candidates to replace Greg Jones as Fred Taylor's backup in Jacksonville. They'll receive the bulk of the playing time in Thursday's exhibition season finale, as Taylor is nursing a sore shoulder and won't play.

Our View

Toefield has 523 yards and six touchdowns in three pro seasons. Wimbush returned kicks last season and had been playing primarily fullback; now he'll be switched into a hybrid role, much like Jones was prior to his injury. Hopefully tonight's game will shed some light on who wins the critical fantasy role of Fred Taylor handcuff

Maurice Drew doesn't appear to be in contention for Jacksonville's backup running back job yet.

Coach Jack Del Rio is a tough guy to predict, but Derrick Wimbush and LaBrandon Toefield are expected to play more than Drew to open the year. That could change during the season, but Drew is a dicier late-round pick following this news.

I think Drew ends up getting carries there before it's all over, and he's much more likely to take the job outright (with a Taylor injury) than either Toefield or Wimbush are. In a re-draft i'd probably take Toefield earlier, but Wimbush is more of a FB type. He could see some goalline carries, but he's not near as talented a runner as Greg Jones is. So I might consider dropping Drew for Toefield, but not Wimbush. Though if at all possible, i'd probably try to find a better drop candidate than Drew. They didn't draft him in the 2nd round to have him sit if/when carries are available for someone.

August 30, 2006, 12:55 Jaguars :: RBRB Wimbush Moves To FullbackMichael C. Wright, Florida Times-Union - [Full Article]For the Jacksonville Jaguars, the injury to RB/FB Greg Jones has left the depth chart muddled. One thing, however, has been decided. RB Derrick Wimbush will replace Jones at fullback. RBs Alvin Pearman, Maurice Drew, and LaBrandon Toefield appear to be the candidates for replacing Jones as the backup to RB Fred Taylor.

Drew will pretty much have to earn his way, but there's no doubt in my mind he'll be passing the other RBs sometime this season (for RB2). I also believe Drew will be their feature back sometime before the '08 season. I thought that prior to Jones' knee injury, but that only enhances my opinion.

A lot of FFers are wondering if the Jags view Drew as a potential feature back. It sounds simple, but it wouldn't seem logical for a franchise to view a 2nd round pick as a role player. BTW, Del Rio mentioned to broadcasters that he believes Drew can be a feature back (no link).

Not sure how much value Drew will have this season, but he's certainly a decent flier. I really like him in dynasty leagues, though.

Well, in a redraft league, I just dropped Drew and picked up Wimbush, based on the info from fanball.

Not sure if the news of him moving to FB is good or bad. Nor am I sure if that was the right move, but it's too late now.

On the Jags website there are a couple articles saying that Wimbush & Toefield are the leading candidates to replace GJones as the short-yardage back.

Wimbush will get the start at FB tonight.

Even if Fred stays healthy, i have to believe Drew gets a piece of the pie, even if it's only 3rd down.
