Wings at Smokey Bones ♥ (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
I'll try not to gush too much, but they have quite simply the best wings I've ever eaten.

Perfection.

I go there with a GB at least three times a month just for those smoked wings. I've tried every flavor. The Memphis Dry Rub and the Sweet Brown Sugar are my favorites. They go so well with a few tall, cold ones. If I like you, I'll give you a money-back guarantee.

I honestly wish the CEO of Hooters would go to this place. The garbage they pass off as "wings" are a total embarrassment.

ETA: Make sure you are ordering the "Smoked Wings" and not the "Chicken Wings."

I'm not much of a patronizer of chain restaurants at all, but I have to agree with RN here. The smoked wings at Smokey Bones were pretty legit when I had them. I haven't had much else from there.

Yeah, I'm sure tipsy and some of the dudes who do this for a living can do chicken wings right. But as far as chain restaurants go.... can't get much better. There is usually a fair assortment of crap from chains.

arent you the guy who likes the food at Hooters?
It's like you didn't even read the OP. Hooters is slop.

I like the outfits. The food? Not so much.
yeah didn’t finish the first post. The link distracted me.
Consistent opinion here for at least 7 years. Frankly, I think I'm owed an apology.

And a Whitman's Sampler.
Apologies. You are a true wings connoisseur. I am sorry for besmirching your good name and fine palate.

Is a Whitman Sampler anything like a Cleveland Steamer?

Never heard of them but apparently they have locations in Grand Rapids and Lansing. Will have to check them out next time I'm in one of those places.

I'm not a fan of the one by my house. Ate there a few times within the first year they opened, haven't been back since (3-4 years).

Best you've ever had? The best wings I ever had was in a place in Bay City Michigan called Rattlesnake Ricks 2 years ago...they were big wings that were smoked first, then fried and tossed in sauce. Insanely delicious.

Hmm. Never had the wings there but all the other food I have had there is quite substandard. Maybe I'll grab some for takeout one day.

Same. Food was below average but never tried the wings.

Will be in Rhody this weekend and give em a whirl.

To the last few replies, if you haven't been there in a while, the food has changed. I can't link to it on my phone, but their new CEO used to be involved with Morton's Steak House. And again, if you tried the regular chicken wings before... these ain't them.

Order the "smoked wings" with whatever rub/glaze you prefer. The Sweet Brown Sugar is stupid-good.

This is an appropriate topic for a thread. What is your go to place for wings?
A GB of mine says the wings at Outback are excellent. I haven't confirmed it yet.

I'm always skeptical about his recommendations, in all fairness. He's Irish... any dish that comes with a side of BEER, he raves about.

He once recommended this place for a meatball sub. I took one bite and threw it away. Tasted like dog food.

Smoky Bones literally 5 minutes from my house. Never had the wings. Don't go there often.. at all.. cause it is like.. ok, I guess.

I will be trying the wings this weekend......

Do they still have those awesome donuts? The Smoky Bones by us closed a couple of years ago but the donuts were awesome. Piping hot in a bag of cinnamon sugar, they'd shake them up at your table and leave the bag with a sweet caramel like dipping sauce...so good.

~ 49 minutes from my new office to the Reading, PA location. Love wings, :blackdot: next time I feel like doing a drive for some good eats.

:excited:

Don't drive through Reading unless you are carrying
Oof, I've been out of the SE PA area for a bit longer than I thought, or just a total :whoosh: on my part.

Had no idea, thanks for the heads up. If these wings are good enough, might warrant a rental car with a "drive this car off a cliff and no penalties" insurance rider for the trip.

I had a huge pile of smoked wings yesterday at my favorite local brewery (Alpine). They don't even trim the wings. You get the stick, wing, and that little nub at the end. All one piece. They are smoked and then just a quick flash fry to crisp up. Best wings eva.

You should be able to avoid the actual bad parts of the city depending on where you are coming from but dont make any detours. The Smokey Bones out there is in a fine area, but if you are coming from Philly, you will more than likely be taking 422 (which sucks) and you will be driving right past "east reading" which is pretty bad at this point.

They opened one in Memphis.... It went out of business in a matter of months.

Sums up the caliber of BBQ they serve. Can't speak to the wings as I never set foot in the place.

That's relevant.

Smokey Bones restaurants to close

Darden Restaurants Inc. closed 56 Smokey Bones Barbecue & Grill locations nationwide, including three in the greater Memphis area.
Completely different ownership and menu now, as I pointed out earlier.

And not everyone has access to authentic Memphis BBQ.

 LIke I said... couldn't speak to the wings themselves.

Smoked wings are delicious (I like smoked then quick fried to crisp em up a bit).

The Memphis Dry Rub is really good.

As for large chains, Quaker Steak and Lube has by far the best wings. It's not close really.

This - which is why I never have Smokey Bones wings... the QS&L is within 100 yards of Smokey Bones......

Leeroy Selmin has good smoked wings.

Hooters breaded have grown on me. I used to get them naked, but now I just eat them breaded. ?

They had one about 15min from my work. But there are none in MO and the closest is over the river into IL.

Never had the wings but I've been to one in Pittsburgh several times and the ribs are pretty weak. It's like a Chili's that does BBQ.

Kept going back because it's close to the hotel I'm always at and a 22oz Sam Adams is like $2.50.

EDIT: For wings I'm all about Wing Stop. Love theirs.

Maybe you should have gone down there and grabbed a platter and served it. Pretty much the extent of your BBQ entrepreneurship amiright?
