With all of these cuts due to deadlines getting (1 Viewer)

I read a good quote last week, something along the lines of "TO has the same chance of being an Eagle next season as having Thanksgiving dinner and Donovan McNabbs's house". I dont think anyone would disagree with that, however ...

With all these cuts being done with the cap and free-agency coming up, then postponned, then coming up, then being postponed, why do the Eagles continue to keep TO around? A lot of teams have made cuts because the deadline is so close, they dont want to take a chance. Not the Eagles though, what are they trying to accomplish by not releasing TO. Do they think a deal is close? What are the possibilities?

1. A trade is close and they want to continue negotiations

2. Cutting TO is not high on their agenda

3. Attempt to screw Owens

Thoughts?

Did you see what Lavar Arrington just did to be released by the Skins?.....he paid 'em $4mil so that he wouldnt be cut in June. Id find it hilarious if they prolong Owens' release just so that he'd pay for his freedom. But realistically, they'll cut him when it most benefits their salary cap situation. Just a timing thing more than likely.

I'd probably go with option one. Why let him go when you can still get something?

*edit* Also, he's already allowed to talk to other teams and he can't sign with anyone yet, so what's the big deal?

His bonus doesn't kick in until a few days after the start of the league year (whenever that will happen). The Eagles won't release him until they have to, just out of spite. They have little chance of getting anything in return for him.

My question would be is his bonus due"3 days after the start of Free Agency"

or

"March #, 2006"

This was the same issue with his SF debacle. There was a hard date in his contract that would superceed the dates determined by the league.

:tinfoilhat:

According to a thread on the Eagles MB, the bonus doesn't kick in until the fifth day of the league year. The Phila. Inquirer this morning said

If Owens is not traded by Saturday, the Eagles plan to release him before they have to pay him a $5 million roster bonus.
The fifth day of the league year (for now) is next Monday. Maybe the league office is closed on Sunday, so they have to release him Saturday?

Payback is a #####, huh, T.O.?

Looks like DEN's interest has seriously waned in Owens also. Bronco beat writers are putting forth that it's highly unlikely that Shanahan will make a play for him, and that the cooling off started immediately after Shanahan met with Owens & Rosenhaus.

I vote #3, their have been talks that the Cowboy and Chiefs are the front runners for TO.WE DON'T WANT TO!!!!

Where are you getting your info on the Chiefs? All I've heard is that the interest they expressed was primarily to drive up the price on DEN. The only serious players I've heard about now that DEN is apparently out are DAL & MIA.

Hello Pony Boy, I'll see if I can find it for you. I believe it was Scouts.com, but I'm not sure so I'll check and post back when/if I find it.Ok it was reported by theranchreport.com but it is a premium content. But to give a brief summary. The major player for TO are the Cowboys and Chiefs, Cowboys have the edge because of the Chiefs salary cap (This was back on Sunday, Feb 26). They reported that Drew and Carl Perterson have met about TO and that both sides have agreed to a parameters that's acceptable to both parties. They are reporting a one year deal. But that Drew is also shopping with Dallas, Miami and Denver.

Tex,You are one of my fav posters....you and Ridge for fellow Cowboy fans. I however would welcome TO.

1. Until we know what's up with the CBA, the Eagles like everyone else cant sign the new FAs. So adding cap space provides no benefit.

2. As long as he's an Eagle, there's potential to trade him. If a new CBA adds more than expected to the salary cap, it increases the number of teams who could potentially trade for him and the Eagles chance.

3. His bonus is/was due on the 8th. That may or not be effected by the FA extensions. Either way, today is only the 6th.

Hey friend, I certainly understand why one would want TO. It's just I saw the way TO cut a stable, strong locker room that was the Philly Eagle in two. And that worries me to death. If and I mean "IF" he got signed, I'd be torn.

Speculation (on eagles message board): Banner pays Owens his 7.5 million and forces him to play out his contract from home.

The Eagles are such a disciplined team financially [to a fault in some circumstances], there's a better chance that Capella will be named Jon Gruden's replacement than this happening.
