Witten--what is your gut instinct? (1 Viewer)

NO WAY HE's AFFECTIVE TONIGHT!!!! I love his determination to play but if you start him tonight you have no one to blame but yourself.

Since Austin and Dez have missed some time as well I dont think Witten will be overlooked during the game. Hard choice, but I am going with him over Kyle Rudolph.

Same here. He would not be playing if he were not physically cleared to do so. Start with confidence an know that, if he has a bad game, it happens...with or without injury

Either way, I completely disagree with Dallas's decision here, unless he truely is 100%. I just don't get why they don't want to give him another 11 days to be certain.

He got medical clearance. The doctors wouldnt clear him if he wasnt 100%. I think its a little more misdirection on the Cowboys parts to let the Giants think he wasnt going to play.

Ergo he has to be 100% or damn near close. Starting him with no fear. He is playing with no fear.

I didn't draft Witten to keep my bench warm. The docs cleared the big boy. It's go time
totally agree. I think I would be more upset if he caught two TDs and was on my bench then if he was in my lineup and did nothing. I have Since I am starting Romo at QB I have to go with Witten.disclaimer.. I hate the cowboys too.

It's ok. He's made it to the end of the game without sign of injury. Low production happens, we knew that. Full steam ahead for Jason Witten

 starting Pettigrew over Witten for the next few weeks or until Witten shows he's up to speed.

Im dunno about that. Witten is not the quickest guy on the field, ever. He actually looked good to me. Made some good blocks. Heres the deal. He stayed into block a lot. My guess is that some games, depending on how defenses attack, and how the O-line is doing, you're going to see Witten blocking a lot. When appropriate, he'll be used more as a receiver. Losing your starting center does not instill confidence in an offense.

You guys lost your mind...week 3 or week 4 "might be" the right time frame to start thinking about starting him.

Tex

i would temper expectations more due to the fact they will be in seattle. Loud stadium, solid defense. He might be called on to block quite a bit. I'd say until the O-line gels, if they ever do, Witten might have a bunch of 3 for 25 kind of games. could be wrong though.

Any word from Dallas homers? Hows he been practicing? Is he a safe start this week?
It's funny how all the Cowboys homers were right last week. For this week, I expect him to be a bit more involved, but that isn't saying much. Witten is still tender and the coaching staff wont risk losing him by throwing him 9-10 targets. I would expect more in the range of 2-5 targets. 20-50 yards and a 20 percent chance of a TD. I likely would NOT start Witten this week again.

Romo has good history vs Seattle. If we go by history of how he has fared as well as other tight ends vs sea it's reasonable to expect 5-6 catches 60-70 yds and a td.

If you like cook or Bennett for more than that then there you go insert them over Witten. But if those were my choices it wouldn't even be a second thought for me Witten would be locked in. He got the rust off in week 1. 10 days off. Practiced without limitations. Good to go.

Agreed. He played around 80% of the snaps in Week 1 and was targeted three times. So if they were trying to protect him it was pretty minimal. With an additional ten days to recover and practice I'd expect him to be in his normal role.

So what's the gut instinct on Jason Witten now? Will he bounce back from this low production to date, or is this the begnning of the end for the guy?

Looking back in game logs, he always struggles against the Giants it seems, but this latest stinker wasn't against them and was his worst in quite a while. My gut says he may not be right all year.

So, anyone buying or selling Witten?

I've been thinking of buying Witten but it seems this spleen injury is going to be a season long issue. Really not sure what to think at this point. He had a big drop last week and it seems he's a bit uneasy with the idea of taking hits.Wish I knew how much pain the guy was in to gauge his stock in terms of full season production but Im nervous regardless.

It looks like they're keeping him out there as a decoy. But remember:Spleen.
Cool story bro :banned: I think the fantasy death of Witten is overstated. As a Bears fan I'm concerned it ends Monday, but as an owner I it seems like you've got to keep him on the bench til he shows a pulse again.

I've watched all the games so far... he isn't the same guy, not even a shell of the same guy. Perhaps at some point he may get back, but through 3 weeks... I'm out on Witten.

I dropped him b/c I had Rudolph. Whether he is done or not, I don't think he will put much better numbers than Rudolph, Fred Davis, etc. to make it worth carrying him. A lot of the TEs this year are pretty much the same.

The drops I've seen are very uncharacteristic of him, almost like he's afraid to get hit when he turns around to catch a pass. He may progress as the season does but I'd be looking to sell him after he has a decent game or right now if someone is looking to "buy low" and trade you a TE like Rudolph.

Started him this week

Even without that final drive by Orton, he had a pretty respectable stat line. Seemed like Romo was relying on him early and often.

He was just rusty after dealing with the spleen injury.

He's been getting targets all season...so it was a matter of time.

That 9.0 yds/rec will start to be a worry if it continues. On the plus side he did drop a couple long passes earlier, so maybe it'll work itself out.
