I was pretty cheap so I tried to avoid the real quarter munchers, although I did play a bit of Gauntlet, a bit of TMNT and a decent amount of Double Dragon.
I liked the Sprint race car game with the steering wheels - you could get a lot of play for a few quarters on that one. Also an obscure game called Two Tigers where you flew a fighter plane and tried to bomb the boat as well as shoot down other planes to sink the boat. I could go a good 10 minutes on that one on one quarter.

We rented a VRBO earlier this year which had what at first glance looked like a Ms. Pacman machine, but it turned out to be a cheap emulator with wonky controls. Lame.

bought it around 2000. when I bought it it had sound but no picture. my neighbor restores and mods old games as a hobby, so he put in a new video card. all in I think it cost me around $1700.

Sounds like one of the 1up machines they sell for around $400 at walmart. They're 3/4 size machines that usually have 3 games. There are kits where you can mod them to 64 games, add arcade quality controls and upgraded power for about $200.
