If you watch the NFL Network at all right now, then you will see a commercial for 360. The big upcoming episode is about the women. One if about flag football and they say that the girls/women are on the "forefront of a national movement".

My question is this... is it really a national movement?

In one sense, you can easily say that women's flag football is more a thing now than ever before. On the other, it doesn't really seem to be a thing to me. (yet?)

As a piece of evidence for it not being a thing. I did a couple of searches here, a forum dedicated to football, and found nothing discussing women's flag football.

Is it or not a thing now? If not, will it or will it not be a thing later? I am curious if anyone cares enough to discuss it or if there will be passionate supporters or somewhere in the middle. Any of those won't be surprising to me.

My daughter's high school.is fielding their first Varsity girl's flag football team this Spring. Probably 15-20 high schools in our area will have teams, where two years ago it was zero. There is a State Championship being added by the high school governing body for our state in Spring 2024.

Her school had over 80 girls put in for the team. She'll be playing, and is looking forward to it.

I guess it all depends on your definition, but I'd say its definitely a thing. At least the start of a thing.

The thing I have found is that people with agendas, no matter what that agenda might be about, don't like questions. If you are offended by a question, then I think that might say more about you than the person asking a question(s). Even more so when the question was honest and open to whatever answers might be offered.

The commercial just makes it sound like it is a much bigger thing than I think it actually is. I would be shocked if anyone around here has watched a girls/woman flag football game, of any level, that they did not have some relationship reason to be there.

The nearest thing I have seen of any inkling of something was last summer when in one of my sons football camps there was a girl that took part. I am not aware of any programs that are girls only, in any form or level, in the area. That is not to say that there isn't any, I have not gone searching for them. It has only been recently that I have seen anything about leagues... maybe a year or two ago?

I don't watch the NFL Network unless a game is being broadcast. So I have no idea what sort of 'national movement' the NFL Network is pitching. Have you seen the ads for the XFL? They are full of ebullient platitudes about the import of the XFL and I just laugh. It's marketing. What do you expect any network to say about something it's pitching to viewers? "Hey guys, there's women's flag football now and it's not very good, but it's on between the rerun of last year's Jets/Pats game and Rich Eisen running 40s in his suit".

If the world at large is encouraging women or anybody to play flag football in any capacity at any level regardless of whether or not it's being televised, I think that's great. Market it as much or as little as you want, I don't care, more outside activity options for more people is always a good thing. A great thing. I am not going to lose sleep over how it's being packaged.

What is wrong with asking a question unless you have an agenda to push or protect?

This isn't an add for women's flag football being televised etc. This is a 360 episode that they are highlighting 'women in football' to coincide with womens history month (I think that is what it is) and they are doing a piece on women's flag football. The thing that I found interesting was calling these girls as being on the forefront of a national movement. Now, maybe they are just being the normal marketing push on it but it was interesting to me. Was this something I have missed and it is bigger than I thought or was it marketing hyperbole.

I don't see why asking the question is threatening in any form.

All I know about the topic of "girls flag football" is that it's existed for as long as I can remember and the girls leagues we had in college were HAWT!!!!

Yeah, I think the peak of my entire stupid life was being an assistant coach for the HP Class of '91 girls' powder puff game my senior year. It's been downhill ever since.

CIF has approved it as a sanctioned sport starting next school year. There is definitely a demand for it. I've seen a lot more girls participating in the flag league I coach in (been coaching in it for 10 years now). It's not enough yet to have a separate girls division, but I don't doubt that is coming soon, I believe a couple of the other local leagues have been able to have a pseudo girls division where they may not have enough girls teams for all games to be against girls teams, but they can schedule it so that they all play each other and then a few games against the boys teams in the age group

IMO its a few things.
1. the NFL is trying to find new ways of people to enjoy their sport. With all the concussion issues the NFL has faced, they need to embrace a version that is somewhat safer. Also, parents are opting to pu their kids into flag recreationally so its a natural fit.
2. Women's involvement in sports is huge football was a sport that was generally closed off to them. This gives an opportunity for girls to play, but also to become fans of the regular version.

Once they determined (whether correctly or incorrectly) that baseball met neither of these items, they were voted out. Softball got unfortunately caught up in that I think as if they were not associated with baseball, I think they may have survived on their own.

With baseballs WBC starting to gain some traction with the top players wanting to be involved, I think this bodes very well for the future of baseball (and as such softball) to rejoin the Olympics in 2028. Many players in the WBC mentioned the World Cup as having an effect on why they want to start playing in the WBC.

Our school just started a 1st/2nd grade flag football program as a prelude to the tackle football that starts in 3rd grade. I volunteered to help out with coaching and the other day they sent out a list of the team.

From 1st grade there are 15 girls and 8 boys
From 2nd grade 15 of each.

The 1st grade class has a very small class of boys... I think actually 9. But I was super impressed with so many girls coming out to play. I have no idea if there girls wanted to or if the parents just signed them up but regardless, much higher numbers than I would have guessed if you asked me before we got the rosters.

I spoke with one of the coaches on the flag football team, she is starting up the girls flag football program for the local HS. They started at the end of last school year and a number of girls showed interest. Over the summer, they only had about 14 come out. Then with school starting they had 20 something and now up into the 40's. The other two HS's in our district are starting teams this year as is a number of other schools in the general area.

For the girls on our team, there are for sure more than a couple who are there because their parents signed them up and are happier sitting together talking or playing patty cake or whatever than playing football. To be fair, there are more than a couple of boys that are the same in that they clearly have no desire to be there. That all being said, there are many girls that are just as into it as the boys.

In fact, the whole conversation with the coach starting the flag football team at the HS was because I drove by her house to drop off something and she was outside with her daughter practicing flag football.

I would say that this indeed a 'movement' and is really growing by leaps and bounds.

It is going to take well past our lifetimes before softball is global imo.

Soccer is ingrained in every culture and even with that huge advantage it still took three decades before it became truly global for the women.

Softball has a much steeper hill to climb.
