Work hasn't given our bonuses this year - no notice (1 Viewer)

So every single year I've been with my company, I have received a bonus. Guys who have been here for 10+ years have gotten them - everysingle year.

Except for this year. We always have it by the first week in August but so far.... Nada.

How giant of a Richard move is it to not at least warn us? I always plan my vacation with the money I get from my bonus and this year is no different. We have a trip planed in November to take the whole family to Disney and unless I pull money out, it's going to be a bare bones trip. :(

Has this ever happened to anybody else? How long should I wait before going all Cousin Eddie????

You should write a movie script about your situation and sell it to Hollywood to offset your missing wages.

Bonus? How did you get a bonus? I cut out bonuses this year.

Yeah. Thanks for telling us. I was expecting a check. Instead I got enrolled in a jelly club. 17 years with the company. I've gotten a Christmas bonus every year but this one. You don't want to give bonuses, fine. But when people count on them as their salary, well what you did just plain...

Sucks.

Thank you, Russ.

The problem was counting on the bonus. The shark move is to be suprised if/when it comes.
Agreed, and this is a learning lesson, however it's still a Richard move on their part when they've been consistently doing bonuses for (at least) the last 17 years.

Is there poor communication within your company? Has nobody spoke to people in upper management about this?

It seems like a topic that everyone is aware of, and people obviously have interest in. I'm surprised nothing had been mentioned.

Rumblings are going on. Guys are starting to freak out but we're all trying to remain patient and hope they do the right thing.

Why don't you rumble into the boss's office and ask? Just a thought

I thought bonuses were largely dead and gone in American business. Except maybe at start-ups for their first few years. And maybe for very high-level executives at Fortune 500 companies.

What industries are bonuses still semi-standard for the rank-&-file? Sales positions, I'm sure, but in what fields?

Seriously though, GL with this. It sounds like you have two major, related problems. First, you're effectively taking a pay cut with no notice. And second, you apparently work for ####ty managers who are unwilling to level with their employees. Both of those things suck.

I've gotten them working for an electric utility.

Pretty much.

I've never had an annual review, but I've gotten raises every year so no real complaint, but not how I would do things.

People like to know where they stand. I have no idea if they're happy, content, or dissatisfied with my performance. I don't need a pat on the back, but would like to know how they feel.

I'm hesitant to apply at other similar companies for fear my company would find out.

My company pays bonuses and plans to for the foreseeable future. They are given in December.

about 30-50% of my total comp is bonus. Banking. I wish it was all salary.

We used to have bi-annual bonuses paid out. Usually was 1/2 month of pay for each employee each time. In 2009 we stopped just issuing bonuses without regard for company profit. Now our bonuses are paid quarterly, are tied to the profit of the company. Since 2011 they have equaled more annually per employee than prior to the shift in basing them directly off profits.

The company is in manufacturing but is not the norm as it is 100% employee owned across the board. No one employee owns more than 4% of company stock. Our benefit package is always been higher than industry norms though.

National equipment rental company. It's tied to performance but in the 7 years I've been here I have never not gotten one. Our company is heavily incentivised this way. Dudes can literally double their salary if they perform above their budgets.

Does't apply to tellers or CSRs, I assume? How about entry-level analysts and other Excel jockeys?

A friend of my wife's went into banking in the 90s. She worked for three different banks that gave bonuses her first year or two, then either scaled bonuses back a ton or eliminated them altogether. She went to work at a multnational bank that has been consistent with their generous bonus structure for over a decade now.
