I had a draft last night, for a recently formed league of coworkers. (Standard scoring rules.) I am the most seasoned fantasy owner in the group, and there is a sprinkling of first-timers. Thus, I was expecting an interesting draft with some questionable selections... and it delivered, to be sure. In discussing the draft results later, there was some disagreement over what the worst pick was. Thus the poll...

Furthermore, what is the worst pick you can remember hearing in the first round of a draft, any year in recent memory?

(Incidentally, the guy who picked Palmer at 1.10 also selected David Akers at 4.03 - Ugh!)

Had to think about it for a minute, but went with Ward.

Manning @ 1.1 :( is, obviously, not the smartest move. BUT. He is at least the consensus #1 QB by far, and does have the potential to carry a team if he replicates 2004. If the guy at #1 is a strong QB advocate, and is in love with Manning, he had to take him now.

Palmer @ 1.10. Wow. The only thing (for me) that makes this better than Ward is that Palmer is typically ranked top 5, with the potential to be top 2 (or 1). Add in all the hype he's gotten this preseason, and an inexperienced owner would at least be somewhat forgiven for this egregious error.

Ward @ 1.12. Wow wow. Two wows is worse than one, so Ward is the worst of the 3. If you're not especially familiar with the NFL, you STILL go Big 3 old school WR rankings (Moss/Owens/Harrison). If you ARE somewhat familiar, then you KNOW Ward isn't even in the top 10. Ugh. Steeler fan on this one? Or maybe the Super Bowl is the only game he/she has seen in the past 10 years? Wow wow. Wow.

Of course, according to the ADP, the worse pick was Palmer, but the above is just my own $.02:

Manning: ADP 12, Picked 1 = -11

Palmer: ADP 38, Picked 10 = -28

Ward: ADP 32, Picked 12 = -24

ALSO - worst pick in recent memory? This is REAL easy.

Last night's auction draft.

3rd time through the nomination process, and the J-E-T-S fan in the room nominates WR BRAD SMITH. Of course, he is ecstatic when no one else bids on him. (guy was a last minute fill in for an owner that couldn't make it, bet even so!) :bag:

Brett Favre in the 1st round last season. These Packers homers can't help themselves.

Then he drafted Bubba Franks in the 4th round

Needless to say, we were pretty sad when he decided not to play in our league anymore.

Has to be Ward.

I understand the Manning and Palmer picks. They're the top two QBs and newbies tend to overvalue QB in fantasy football. At least they picked the best player at the position they wanted.

To think that Hines Ward is the 12th best RECEIVER would be a stretch, much less the 12th overall pick.

12 team redraft last week, Palmer at 1.07.

This from a guy that's played FF for about 12 years. He'd had a few drinks before the draft...

Someone just awful took Mike Anderson 2nd overall and Brian Griese in the following round. I don't think anyone can top that and I swear I am not making that up!

The kind of year Manning should have, it would actually be the best pick in a league which gives 6 pts for a passing TD. Manning will be huge this year. Colt's defense is weaker, their inside running game will be weaker, but more production out of TE's and pass catching running backs. The Colts had most games wrapped early last year and had home field advantage wrapped up early too. Won't happen this year.

:hophead: :hophead: Depends on the league scoring rules :hophead: :hophead:

20 points per reception? Minus(-)6 per rushing attempt? Starting lineup is QB/WR/WR/WR/WR/WR/WR/WR/Flex/TE/K/D?

Maybe the Plamer pick was based on how he played against Green Bay in the pre-season game. If he does that week in and week out he'd put up 5300 yards, 112 touchdowns and rush for over 400 yards.

Now that's worth a 1st round pick!

;)

I have no idea who Brad Smith is.

rookie WR who was a QB in college at Missouri

It was Friday night...before his comeback game.

In an Antsports keeper league where you can keep a guy for 2 rounds ahead of where they were drafted last year, I offered a guy Carson Palmer who could have been kept for a 3rd round pick. In exchange I was asking to move up from the 3.08 to the 3.05 spot (basically free for him then since it doesn't matter what 3rd round pick he uses on him). He declined.

Draft started and the guy that declined my offer picked Carson Palmer with the 1.05 pick (ahead of Manning I might add).

This year, in one of my leagues (last Saturday to be exact), the guy that had the 1.01 pick traded down to 1.05 and wound up picking Chicago's Team Defense. If anyone else has a worst first round pick than that, I'm all ears.

got you beatthe year after the Bucs won the Super Bowl the person with the 1.01 pick stands up from the table and announces his pick.

With the first pick of the draft I select TAMPA BAY DEFENSE and sat down with a smile on his face, S.

I started an experimental league that starts 1qb, 1rb, 2wr, 1te, 1 flex (rb/wr/te) and goes all the way through the ProBowl. The league is mostly veterans, but the guy at #3 is a guppy. I picked #4 :excited:

Round 1

1 Shaun Alexander RB Seattle Seahawks

2 LaDainian Tomlinson RB San Diego Chargers

3 Steve Smith WR Carolina Panthers

4 Larry Johnson RB Kansas City Chiefs

5 Tiki Barber RB New York Giants

6 Peyton Manning QB Indianapolis Colts

7 Clinton Portis RB Washington Redskins

8 Tom Brady QB New England Patriots

9 Steven Jackson RB St Louis Rams

10 Edgerrin James RB Arizona Cardinals

11 LaMont Jordan RB Oakland Raiders

12 Ronnie Brown RB Miami Dolphins

13 Rudi Johnson RB Cincinnati Bengals

14 Chad Johnson WR Cincinnati Bengals

Round 2

15 Terrell Owens WR Dallas Cowboys

16 Randy Moss WR Oakland Raiders

17 Carson Palmer QB Cincinnati Bengals

18 Larry Fitzgerald WR Arizona Cardinals

19 Cadillac Williams RB Tampa Bay Buccaneers

20 Marvin Harrison WR Indianapolis Colts

21 DeShaun Foster RB Carolina Panthers

22 Brian Westbrook RB Washington Redskins

23 Willie Parker RB Pittsburgh Steelers

24 Domanick Davis RB Houston Texans

25 Antonio Gates TE San Diego Chargers

26 Kevin Faulk RB New England Patriots

27 Santana Moss WR Washington Redskins

28 Torry Holt WR St Louis Rams

What's worse is that his comment after the Faulk pick was, "I am waiting for Dillon and Maroney to go down." :wall:

EDIT: Forgot the flex position.

My very first fantasy season (1997), another first-timer with the #1 overall pick took Herman Moore.  :lmao:

I'll say that again. He picked Herman Moore. I think his name was Chad but I forget, because after that we re-named him Herman Moore.

Drafting Terrell Davis never seemed so easy (I had the 2nd pick). :bye:

I've never had the top pick ever and this guy wastes it on a QB? He should be in jail. Isn't that a felony? :o

We started a new Auction Dynasty league this year, so of course we all started with the same amount of $$. Next year of course, we will all have varying dollars to use for what will be in the FA pool. Anyway, the following are some interesting (translation: BAD) picks. Note that the majority of these guys have been playing FF for a minimum of 3 years or greater:

Starting Salary: $250

Dom. Davis: $45 (As a reference, I got E. James at $53 and K. Jones at $28)

Chicago Def: $10 (This one was the best. The bid started at $1, then one of the guys shouts out $10!!! :lmao: )

Bush: $74 (I guess this guy didn't read our league rules...each player you keep, their salary increases by $3...is Bush's value going to warrant $80 in two years?)

Manning: $51 (The QB's wnet like this: Manning $51, Palmer $36, E. Manning $37, Brady $25, Hasselback $21 and some great values like Delhomme $8)

I was really surprised that these guys bid up some of these rookies. I may not win this year, but I am sitting pretty for future domination :D

I don't have a 1st round pick blunder for you, but I bet you I can give you close to the worst. My first year ever playing, I rated players based on last years stats. In the second round, I drafted the player remaining who had scored the most points last year, Sebastian Janikowski. That was 4 years ago.The amazing thing was, I finished 4th in a 12 team money league. I was able to make some great trades. That NFL Network commercial that says to take your kicker early and not worry about RBs, that is exactly what I did 4 years ago.

Domanick Davis went 1.11 in a 14 team draft I was in last Friday.

Doesn't quite rank up there with drafting a D at 1.01, but pretty damn bad.

Four years ago, when I started FF, I picked Steve McNair at 1.01.

I didn't do so good.

Then I became the VBDStudent.

Now I take people's money and win prizes.

:bye:
