Worst year for injuries ever? (1 Viewer)

madd futher

Footballguy
Lest anyone think that I'm whining, you will note that one of my 4 teams had a GREAT fantasy year so far, and I'm a solid favorite to win the championship (knock on wood).

I also believe a moderate amount of injuries are good for fantasy football, because the better owners can navigate around bye weeks and a few injuries more successfully than poorer owners usually can. In fact, the season I remember most fondly is the one where I drafted Tom Brady on the 1st/2nd round turn and won my league in spite of his early injury.

I have never experienced a season even close to this, and these are just the fantasy relevant guys that I can think of off the top of my head - feel free to add any I missed.

QBs:

Season ending injuries: P Manning, Schaub, Cutler, Cassell, Campbell

Multiple week injuries: Vick, Bradford

RBs:

Season ending injuries: Charles, F. Jackson, Hightower, E Graham, LeShoure, Ryan Williams, Best, Moreno, R Jennings, Alex Green

Multiple week injuries: ADP, McFadden, Forte, Bradshaw, Blount, Hillis, LT, Jacobs, F Jones, Addai, Hardesty

WRs:

Season ending injuries: Amendola, Britt, S. Rice, MSW, Shipley, Parrish, Easley, Gettis, D. Jones, Hankerson, Salas, Clayton, Jenkins

Multiple week injuries: A Johnson, Austin, J Ford, Manningham, Maclin, D Moore, S Moss, Colston, Floyd, E Sanders, Massaquoi, Royal

TEs:

Season ending injuries: Moeaki, Carlson, Cooley

Multiple week injuries: Clark

I'm sure that this is not a comprehensive list by any means. Is there anywhere to get some historical history to put this into perspective?

Here is an example of the impact injuries had on two of my four teams (as well as my competition).

Team 1, a redraft league: Team 1 is 10 - 3, has earned a play-off bye and also outscored the next highest scoring team by something like 10 FPTs per week. And that was not without a few bumps in the road, having to overcome the loss of Amendola to season ending IR as well as S Moss for about 6 weeks. In addition, Julio Jones and Denarius Moore had multiple week injuries. I traded Cutler well before his season ending injury, although I got Felix Jones who had a subsequent multiple week injury and then lost his starting job - I ultimately dropped him on the waiver wire). Luckily I was able to trade Best before the extent of his injury became evident, and traded ADP before his two week injury, so I dodged some major injury bullets. Ultimately, four timely and significant trades plus a super waiver wire pick-up, Cam Newton, made my season while some other very good owners caught the brunt of the injury bug.

On the other extreme, Team 2, A deep (keep 10) keeper is 6 - 7 and could not overcome the loss of six of my original players to season ending injuries, as well as three other originally rostered players plus two more waiver pick-ups that had multiple week injuries.

After my keepers, my 1st two draft choices were Mikel Leshoure, and Ryan Williams. Both went on season ending IR before the season even started. Other players who started the season for this team but had season ending injuries were Schaub, Cutler, Best and S Rice. In addition, three other players who started the season for Team 2 but had multiple week injuries were Julio Jones, Emmanuel Sanders and Jacoby Ford. Then we add D Alexander and D Moore, the two waiver wire pick-ups who had multiple week injuries, and perhaps a 6 - 7 season should be viewed as an accomplishment. My other two teams had a similar injury track.

Here's the point: Since I haven't deeply analyzed my over-all season yet, I'm not sure what I could have done to change the results all that much. With team 1, I frankly was very lucky. But the sheer number of injuries to some key players on my other teams meant that multiple play-off teams were just not in the cards this year.

I suspect that quite a few of us are in the same boat and feel that this season was an outlier as impact of injuries on our teams. So if you have a team like my team 1, congratulations - but realize like I do that probably the fantasy gods were very kind to you. On the other hand, if this extraordinary rash of injuries caused you to miss the play-offs, then learn what you can from it and realize there is no shame in not making the dance this year.

I'm sure both the play-off bound and those who saw their season come to a disappointing end have similar stories. There is always next year.

I'd like to hear other fantasy players opinion on this.

I'm not going to say this year was more/less plentiful of season ending injuries (I honestly think it is more), but it seems like every year we think it is the worst year. Maybe guys are getting hurt more? I don't know, but again, I feel like this is an annual topic.

Gore missed a few games with injuries, Nicks missed some, Julio Jones missed some, Ingram missed some, Henne had season ending surgery, Matt Leinart is on IR (Schaub's backup)

Yeah I think it has been an incredibly bad year for injuries.

:goodposting: There are always key injuries every year, but it definitely seemed to me to be the most injuries I have dealt with in a long time. It wasn't so much the season ending ones that happened more, but the in-game 1st quarter injuries were all over the place this year. I posted about this in the venting, but in every league I am in, it seemed like I lost at least 1 person per week to an in-game injury. Yes, I know that most injuries happen in the game, but I do wonder if the shortened pre-season contributed more to the tweaked hammies and tweaked ankles, etc.Again, maybe it was just my teams, but I can't recall getting as many 0-3 point contributions from players where they got hurt early in a game. Definitely the most frustrating year I have ever had in FF.

The bolded are not season ending injured and need to be placed on the multiple week injury list. Both could come back this year, Cutler not until the playoffs, but he's not IR yet, and Campbell is already doing some light throwing in the hopes of backing up Palmer down the stretch.

Other than a few extra hamstring tweaks, this year was NO DIFFERENT than any other year.

This exact same topic is literally re-posted every single season, for every single sport. Short-term bias.

Most of us don't play in 38-team fantasy leagues where guys like Easley are relevant. I'm sure next year when you're starting the exact same thread, you'll definitely take into account that Greg Salas and David Gettis suffered season-ending injuries.

I'd say it's worse this year.....only because it affected me worse. It's probably the same as every other year but it seems worse because it is on the verge of costing me a playoff spot after a great start and a solid team. It's just the way it goes. I know I've made more waiver transactions than I ever had.

I understand where you guys are coming from but I do think injuries have been at least a bit worse this year compared to last, at least from a fantasy impacting perspective (and I'd argue an actual NFL one). Compare the OP list to the half-### one I just made of 2010. I'm not saying this is necessarily thread-worthy, and I'm too lazy to look up more than last year, but I think it's fair to say 2011 is worse than 2010.

QB Favre (3 games), Rodgers (1 game), Garrard (2 games), Vick (4 games), Kolb, Stafford (9 games), Shaun Hill (3 games), Vince Young (7 games)

RB

Most or all of Year- Hardesty, Tate, Starks, Grant, DeAngelo, Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Portis, Colts (Addai, Brown, Hart)

5 games- Gore

4 games- Mathews

3 games- DMC, MJD, Moreno, Wells

2 games- M. Bush (lost starting job), J-Stew

1 game- Peterson (WK14), McCoy

WR

Most or all of Year- Avery, Clayton (11 games), Sidney Rice

7 Games- Collie, Steve Smith East

5 games- Floyd

4 games- Britt, Dez

3 games- Andre, Nicks, Breaston, Lee Evans

2 games- DeSean, Owens, Harvin, Marshall, Garcon, BMW, MSW, Burleson, Steve Smith South, Ochocinco

1 game- Colston, Welker, Calvin

TE- Clark (10 games), Gates (6 games), Zach Miller (1 game), Heap (3 games)

Injuries are even worse on the defensive side. Jaguars just put their 21st player on IR. Their Top3 corners and several defensive linemen are on IR. They have put so many players on IR they have to waive (injured) players to make room. The Rams have gone thru an astounding number of DBs.

Worst year for injuries ever?
Beats me. Maybe? Doesn't seem all that bad to me, in general.I do recall seeing folks make these observations every year, which makes me kind of doubt that it is.
Did Injuries reduce FF to mostly luck this year?
No.
On the other hand, if this extraordinary rash of injuries caused you to miss the play-offs, then learn what you can from it and realize there is no shame in not making the dance this year.
:ptts:

Hmmm... lets see, I've lost Best, Amendola, Julio for part of the season, Steve Smith PHI has been worthless with his knee injury recovery.

I couldn't play Foster for the first 4 games and Jacobs was banged up with a knee injury for a few games.

But I'm sitting at 10-3. Just played the hell out of the waiver wire and restructured my team. Guys like K. Smith, Murray, and Decker have helped me out tremendously!

My playoff schedule looks nice too.

Depends on your definition of luck, I intentionally avoided 95% of the players on that list, so my year went pretty well.

Bradshaw was the only player on that list I drafted in any league and I actually drafted him in multiple leagues, his draft position was well worth the 9 games he played and hes back in time for playoffs so, everything turned out better than expected.

When you have barely any preseason and don't give players time to train and condition properly, it stands to reason that there will be more injuries than normal during the season.

I've been doing FF since 1991.

This is the worst year for injuries in all that time.

It's because it's every week several key FF players go down.

On my own team, I've had players injured in 12 out of 13 weeks! And other in my league are experiencing nearly the same thing.

We've discussed this and think it's probably relatd to the holdout and players not being in quite as good a shape when the season started.

 Nitpick. You want him to change it to "regular season" ending? Cutler's injury cost him the rest of the regular season and Campbell's did, too, in that his injury led to the team trading for a new starter. Not that anyone in a 16 teams or less league was counting on Campbell.

Injuries happen every year. But for me this has been the worst year in well over 7 years I have had with my teams.

Peyton Manning (which scorched Reggie Waynes value for me)

Jammal Charles

Peyton Hillis

Andre Johnson

Manningham

Gates

Colston

Couple all that with Chris Johnson's performance most of the year (thank god he has woke up for the playoff run)

I could go on and on. I can overcome 1 maybe even 2 key injuries...but when it snowballs into this type of year what are you going to do?

I have 3 teams out of 7 in the post season and one with a true legit shot to take it all.

It was one of those years. I can't complain. If it happens again next year....I may have to retire!! LOL.

He said fantasy relevent.
So I guess Massaquoi is fantasy relevant but Braylon is not? I drafted him fairly high this year with decent hopes he could give me some kind of value this year but finally the other day I finally said f it abd dropped him.

Every year I usually have a couple of leagues where the injury bug doesn't get to, this year I have had major injuries to every single team. Def worse this year....

I wish I was playing fantasy football in 1965. Those guys didn't come out of a game unless they had a limb falling off.

Unfortunately injuries has become what fantasy football is all about. It don't matter how you draft or who you start. Pick up guys that will be effective once starters go down and you'll be a champ. That's all there is to it anymore.

I do think it's worse this year for whatever reason. In a normal year, you allocate your FAAB budget to maximize return and grab the top waiver wire guys in the first third of the season and ride out your new team to the playoffs. I spent my budget up with hardly any in reserves and now it's killing me. I know it's considered the best shot to get the best free agents, but next year, I'll do my best to hold that last 20% of my budget to bail me out for an emergency substitute off the wire. Who knew it would be this bad?

In the last 7 years I would have a key injury or 2. But to have 5,6 players on a team go down all year, some of the year whatever....this has not happened to me in the last 6 years.A lot of my teams (dynasty) have rounded into the same teams by virtue of drafting and trades...and it has been very profitable so i am not complaining. But I have 4 teams that have:Peyton ManningReggie Wayne (directly affected by Mannings injury)Peyton HillisJamal CharlesChris Johnson (not an injury I know but sure felt like it)ManninghamColston (early in the year)Andre JohnsonBrutal. Just brutal.

I'd just like to add one more thing to the smart*** comment I got. We all don't play in 6 team leagues, ########

If the injuries for your team appear normal this year consider yourself very lucky!

In my main league I have actually had at least one player not finish a game due to injury in every week this season except one. But another guy in that same league has had one player get injured all season. I'd be interested to see any real data on injuries this year as with fantasy most of us have a hard time seeing beyond our own rosters.

thats the biggest one, it affected so many players. basically the entire colts Offense went on IR with that injury. it took freeney/mathis out of their games b/c they never had a lead to rush the edge. with the offense being so god awfully inept no IDP against the colts was useful as well(aside from opposing DL's at times).

others i didn't see listed:Kolb,Malcolm Floyd,Maclin, George Wilson, Carolina LB'ers/eric berry/Patrick Chung/Ray Lewis/Mario Williams/Mayo/Leon Hall and the list goes on and on

Every year I usually have a couple of leagues where the injury bug doesn't get to, this year I have had major injuries to every single team. Def worse this year....
:goodposting: When you play in a few leagues, you expect to get hit in some of them, but not all. Not only have I had a major injury in all leagues to a top RB, but I have had in-game, 1 game, 2 game injuries all over the place. Amazing that in all 3 leagues I have struggled to find RB2s as most of them have gotten nicked or IR'd. As someone stated above, with such a short off season, it doesn't surprise me at all. While injuries happen every year, it has definitely been my worst injury year ever, especially since I started playing multiple leagues.

Left off Foster. That definitely affected me out of the gate.

It HAS been a higher injury year.

I think going into this season, we knew it thought. With no offseason, it was expected; especially the nagging hamstring and ankle type injuries.

Surprisingly, it affected my team that I thought was best prepared for it the most so I guess that is an argument for how much luck has to do with this overall.

A slightly different take on this but how are the fantasy points holding up in people's leagues from previous years? Injuries may be up but fantasy points are getting scored at fairly close to the same clip in my league.

I don't know if there are more injuries, but the injuries seem to be lingering a lot longer than usual. Usually you'll have a lot of players banged up and missing a game or two -- now it seems like everyone injured is out 1-2 months or on IR.

All injuries do is test your skills as a manager. To me, the draft is the easy part. It's dealing with injuries and the poor performances that really determine a manager's skill. Sometimes, the settings are just more difficult because you have more injuries than normal. I just took first place with a team where my draft, due to injuries (Hillis, Britt) and performance (TBMW, Manningham), was the worst I ever had.

I'd rather injuries than poor performance anyway.
