Would McCluster get a full split of RB carries if TJ or JC were out? (1 Viewer)

If Jones went down, I don't see why McCluster would split touches with Charles; McCluster an outside runner that frankly doesn't run as well outside as Charles does (then again, nobody does, with the exception of Chris Johnson.) He would probably see an increase on 3rd down action, so maybe 3 touches a game more than he gets right now.

If Charles went down, however, it is possible McCluster could see 8-12 carries and 5-7 targets. Charles is the Chief's biggest weapon, and though McCluster cannot replace Charles, there are things Charles does that McCluster can do a lot better than Jones (screens, draws, sweeps, flat routes.)

Short answer: McCluster could see a significant increase in touches if Charles was injured. If Jones is injured, McCluster would gain maybe 3 touches a game.

But if TJ was out, a Charles/McCluster split could be nasty. I'd like to see if McCluster could really play RB in the NFL. He sure did in the SEC.

That's true, but there's not much from a true RB standpoint that McCluster has an advantage over Charles. I see McCluster as more of a slot receiver/Reggie Bush type, being more involved in the passing than running game. I just can't see him running between the tackles more than 5 times a game. I hope he proves me wrong though, because he's an exciting player to watch and is a playmaker.

McCluster isn't a running back. That's like saying if Dwill went down would Steve Smith split carries with Stewy.

Not exactly. Steve Smith wasn't a RB in college and doesn't get RB carries now. This is more like as if the Saints would've used Reggie Bush as a WR when he was a rookie.I actually think McCluster should be moved back to RB.

McCluster was a RB in college - he has handled a few carries this year from the RB position.

I could see him getting some extra touches there if one of JC or TJ went down.

I get the feeling if either RB goes down, then Moeaki gets a nice bump in receptions....

Don't forget, Jackie Battle has hung around the roster & practice squad for what seems like ages (Ok 3 years). He's a bruiser so he'd probably be in taking Jones' spot if he went down.

Jackie Battle would be the next back to get carries if Jones or Charles gets hurt. I'm sure McCluster's carries would increase a bit, but he wouldn't get as many as Battle who looked great in the pre-season.
